It was nice

There is so much wrong with this show.
But the good: Moon GaYoung was brilliant - she did emotional well, she did silly well and her comedic timing had me laughing out loud at times. She was wonderful. I loved all the friends even SooJin, especially SooJin in fact until she did what she did, but even then…it’s understandable. The music was good. I loved the sister’s storyline and how straightforward she was and JuGyeong’s dad was adorable.
But all in all 3 words, or 3 syllables, made it for me -

Starts off good, gets a tad boring later on

Now don't get me wrong, I love a good romcom. But this one just kind of fell flat by the end. (Keep in mind I have never read the webtoon while reading this review)

The first few episodes provide a good backdrop. It introduces us to the main character and her issues and trauma regarding her looks. This is of course where the title comes from, and I was expecting a drama centering around this issue of finding beauty inside yourself when people around you seem shallow. And it was that....for like 5 episodes.

Listen, I love Eunwoo and his acting was fine for what he was given, but good lord Suho's characterization is so dry. Besides a few scenes regarding his past trauma and fighting with Seo Jun, his whole personality is either nothing or simply Ju Gyeong.

They did my man Seo Jun so dirty. Like yeah he got to debut but is that really considered a happy ending for him? She strung him along (albeit unconsciously) for years and in the end he got friendzoned and ended up with nobody. Speaking of characters done dirty, I don't know how Su Jin's character is in the webtoon, but she had so much more potential that they wasted on making her the intentionally evil person just to move the drama along. Her backstory and her emotions were well portrayed and I caught myself feeling so bad for her, until they just threw that all away to make her pure evil and then she disappeared until the last episode and suddenly all was forgiven? nah

Unfortunately I found myself skipping through a lot of Su Ho and Ju Gyeong's more intimate scenes. I thought at least the entirety of the drama might delve deeper into their relationship and expand on them slowly coming to realize their feelings for each other, but nope they get together in like episode 5 and then all the magic is kind of gone. i found myself saying 'yeah yeah get on with it' anytime they were acting all lovey dovey in the later episodes, especially because i knew that Seo Jun was still getting the short end of the stick.

Overall, the side characters and their relationships were a lot more interesting and they held my attention more often than the main couple. The music was cute and I enjoyed listening to it. The show as a whole is okay, but I don't see myself ever rewatching it.

A lighthearted watch

While True Beauty covers more mature subject matters, it shouldn't be considered a "mature" show. If you're looking for a show that covers bullying and beauty standards in a very introspective manner then this isn't for you. That being said, I did enjoy the show! It was a reallly great and entertaining show. The acting was a bit over the top at times and after ep 8 or 9 the show kinda went down in enjoyablity for me. I would recommend watching if you just wanna tune the world out and see smth lighthearted

my first kdrama

the first episode is very boring and silly. I admit that I gave up for a few days to continue watching because the first episode seemed very childish to me. the story is really cool and fun at the same time. She shows pride, empathy, understanding, love, everything in all the characters. because it was my first drama, I developed a very strong affection for it.

Got me into dramas

Say what you want, it was chessy, not well thought out etc but I don't care. Before this drama I tried to watch other dramas but this drama just stuck with me more than the others. I found myself having anxiety for weeks waiting for an episode to come out, went on twitter to talk and tweet about it others etc.

I enjoyed every single thing about it, except the love triangle and how the second lead was treated. Even at the end the authors kept disrespecting the guy. As much as I was rooting for the first lead, i could recognize that a two year time jump and he's still in love with her and gets chosen over is such disrespect to that character. Making him long for her til the bitter end. Not saying that that the writers should've given him another love interest because that would've been a cop out, but I'm saying that the writers should've made the seconds leads feelings dwindle a bit.

Also secondary couple was so damn cute I loved them so much

yeah

I see where all of these other comments bashing the drama are coming from. When I watched the drama by myself before reading the other reviews on this site, I genuinely enjoyed and looked forward to every new episode that came out. Although I do understand and agree how the plot isn't anything special, it didn't really matter to me. I'm sure there are more hopeless romantics like me out there that wouldn't mind watching the same cliché plot over and over again but still get butterflies everytime. I had a great time watching it while sitting back and enjoying the eye candy the lead actors/actress provided us with. Honestly, most of us watched it bc of the visuals. I wouldn't rewatch the whole drama, but I'd be more than willing to skim through the trailers and clips of the drama on YouTube ig.

ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTIONS

This show made me laugh like a maniac, giggle like a high-school girl and cry like some child. Never have I watched something that has made me go through so many emotions. Even in a single episode I laughed and next minute i'm crying and then i'm laughing through my tears. There were some aspects of the show that weren't too good, but the storyline was nice and the way MC's story was shown was brilliant.

Best guy in this show was Seo Jun, since he was introduced to the end I knew he wouldn't let me down, he's become one of my favourite characters now. I miss him sooo much now that I've finished the show and I hope to see him in another show soon. Love him through and through and I'm completely team SeoJun, there was not ONE thing that I didn't like about him....NOTHING. HE'S AMAZING.
Another good character was Ju-Young, he was just a nutcase and I loved him for it, he's probs one of my fav goofy side characters. He showed a very brief caring side a couple of times, but those moments literally lasted 5 seconds...max and then he went back to his crazy self

The show went through some drama - like all shows - but for some reason the drama in this show and the emotions hit me so hard and I was crying so many times during sad scenes. But this show was a ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTIONS - One second I'm crying the next I'm laughing, this show made me laugh and smile and just AAAAAHH so much, even just thinking about it now I have a massive grin on my face and I'm trying not to laugh to myself. So I'm really glad to have watched this show and I hope you guys watch it too because you're missing out otherwise.

Honestly, I put off watching 'true beauty' for a while because I didn't think it'd be that good, even tho I'd heard people's thoughts on it, but I'm so glad that I watched it.
Many people dislike this show, but for me it was the emotions that I experienced, EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, that made me keep watching this show after the first couple of episodes :)

First of all this drama is completely for adolescents
The story was ok but nothing new at all in it

It had an important message behind
You should accept yourself the way you are away from others opinions

The bullying was annoying in Korea really and dangerous

The romance was nice
The plot wasn't wow
As usual they should connect the main leads together in their childhood
And I don't know how they remembered eachother
I used to forget people in my same year lol

The main song was really nice, I loved it

The characters were good except
Si mi and the Fl's father he was so irresponssible and stupid

I dislike the outfit of in youp with all these earrings
His character was really nice in the drama which I hated the most for the second ML because he is going to be rejected ?

I felt great when the FL slapped (si mi) the bullying girl a lot
I wanted to enter the screen and share the FL slapping her... LOL ??

Of course tears and drama should take a place towards the end
I didn't get what eun woo did
I hated when one of the partners take a decision by himself thinking this was the good decision for all
I saw that selfish and cowrdness

He left her for two years, know nothing about her,
in the other hand in youp took care of her every day
Really this is not fair
She should ended up with him

The other side stories were nice
In general this drama was just OKAY to watch once

Endearing but cliche

For the most part, this was definitely a fun watch. But though it has high production value, everything from the female lead's personality, to the horrible turn of the second female lead, to all the plot tropes that were used, just made it feel like an oldie drama, It was just all the tropes that were already on my list of pet peeves that I just did not want to see again and was hoping this drama would veer away from. It didn't.

Overall, the production value and visual effects of this drama were really a pleasure to watch, and like many other viewers, the second male lead stole the show for me. Honestly, I might've been a little more lenient for this review if it weren't for the last two episodes, which really pulled a time jump cliche and leaned fully into the love triangle, making the actual plot arcs feel irrelevant. I'm not a huge fan of character development happening off-camera in general, but it felt like I was watching a completely different drama. Those closing episodes very much snuffed out any momentum I feel like the drama had going for it.

I have mixed feelings about this show. It started off very, very strongly. I loved it so much to the point where I started rewatched the entire thing (when there were only 14 episodes) on the same day that I finished it. I was obsessed and still am to be fair. The casting and acting is great. There were so many moments when I cried and no series has ever made me cry before. A lot of extremely hilarious moments to balance out the emotional scenes.

However, the last two episodes ruined the entire thing for me. They were evidently extremely rushed and the entire premise was extremely predictable because you realise that not once has Jugyeong felt any sort of attraction towards Seojun in the entire show and this just makes it obvious that Suho is endgame so, unlike the webtoon, there isn't much suspense about who she will end up with. The last two episodes were so rushed because why did Suho have to leave at the end of episode 14, leaving only 2 episodes for the possibility of jugyeong and seojun which was unlikely. If anything, it would've been best for Suho's father to get sick and Suho having to leave a bit after Jugyeong healing after her bare face got revealed to the school.

Also, they did Seojun so wrong. The writers essentially made him a side character like why add him in the opening and introduce him as an important main character if he's only going to get like 20 minutes of screen time in an entire 70-80 minute episode? the way he carried the entire show but only ever got hurt or left out. It's like they just added him in scenes when it was convenient for the plot rather than treating him like a fully fleshed-out character. The irony is that he has a more developed and so much more interesting character than both Suho and Jugyeong combined despite only being on screen for 1/6th of the time they were. I realised this wouldn't be the same as the webtoon and I was fine with that because I found it refreshing but it frustrated me when they did decide to use scenes from the webtoon but decided to give Seojun's scenes to Suho???? just to fuel their whole Suho is endgame plot line.

Also, the way they wrote Jugyeong's character was absolutely awful in my honest opinion. Tolerable at first but as the episodes progressed, she seemed so one dimensional. The only things that could be in her mind at any one point were her bare face/makeup and Suho. Similar case with Suho. She rarely ever said thank you and/or appreciated her friends (including seojun) for all that they did for her. No one said she had to like Seojun back but never once did she truly treat him like a good friend despite the fact that they were meant to be best friends. He just existed for her to vent her problems about her relationship with Suho. Seojun was always there for her when she needed but she was never there for him. Even after the car accident, not once did this girl bother to ask her "friend" how he was because apparently hiding her bare face from a boy she has no feelings for is more important than his wellbeing. Even after she came back with her face on, everytime she visited she couldn't bother to ask him how he is. She never once cared about his feelings at all and because of the time skip happening with two episodes left, we never knew what happened in between those because apparently, it's illegal for Seojun to have any moment alone with Jugyeong without Suho coincidentally being there like ??

The ending of this show was the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The writers had the audacity to say "happy ending" like no, wtf no this is not. This is only a happy ending for Team Suho which is fine but Seojun deserves justice and happiness too. I am glad that Seojun and Jugyeong never got together because he deserved way better but the fact that they left such a crucial scene of him being rejected to the very last minute meant that Seojun got no time to recover from his emotions and heartbreak. This is what I meant about how sloppy and rushed the last two episodes were. If this happened in any earlier on episode, maybe, Seojun could've gotten a happier ending because he would've already been in the process of healing but nope. No happiness for Seojun at all. Every other single character got shown to have a happy ending, even the irrelevant to plot side characters. All of them at the wedding, having a fun time but no Seojun? I understand he was preparing for his debut but if the writing wasn't so rushed, it would not have been that way. I don't care if Seojun didn't get Jugyeong but he didn't even get a happy ending? Everyone else ended the show with a smile to their faces but Seojun was the only one with a melancholic ending with tears running down his face. awful. They thought that by showing him debut, it would mean a happy ending?? No, because his feelings were still there and he was clearly so broken and pretending to be okay.

In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend if you are strongly team seojun because they do him so wrong
