Good Story Ruined By Unnecessary Twist

This was an enjoyable movie up until the last 10-15 minutes. Instead of having a mellow, thoughtful and sincere ending, Sweet & Sour blindsides you with an unnecessary twist that changes your entire viewing experience (most likely for the worst). While some people might see it as unique or creative, I strongly disagree. This should've been a slow-burn romance/melodrama about a woman desperately searching to reignite an old flame with her partner who isn't in tune with her and her emotions. In some ways, that's what you get to see but it's done very unsatisfyingly. For one, the ML simply isn't a sympathetic character. On the other hand, the FL is almost without flaw while the SFL has absolutely no personality aside from eating hamburgers and fries all day. There's not much of a push-and-pull relationship between the ML and the two female characters either. Not like the trailer implies. I'm frustrated because there's so many things this movie could've done that it didn't do. There's some symbolic moments here and there, but what it's saying as a whole isn't new or even interesting for that matter. The acting and soundtrack is pretty good, and Sweet & Sour is definitely rewatchable but not for the right reasons. It's slightly above average for me.

Pure exposition of wasteful "SUPPOSITION OF REALISTIC" relationships

The story is niche and extremely reliant on the supposed "plot twist" - hence the low rewatch value.
This is not even a romance film God! No Character Development and the relationships made in the end are all toxic even the FL's. I was rooting for the 1st guy only to end up disappointed by the end because of his sad fate.
Both the leads are shit people. However I find the FL more obnoxious. Lots of people in the comment section paints the ML to be the more trashy but they are both similar TBH.

The ML was trashy sure! But he made an effort of going back and forth thru traffic and borderline illegal working conditions to meet the FL. This does not justify the cheating (debatable), the indifference, abortion and whatnot but there's an effort being made. He at least also tried to resist the temptation and only curb to it after the break up.

The FL on the other hand (sighs). I pity the other guy - I was hooked by the film initially because of their cute romance (only to find out that he's just a "rebound guy"). I mean she's outright cheating by the end. She did not even tried to visit the ML at least once in Seoul during the fall out. She did not even exert any effort whatsoever. Of course both of them eventually gave up but still.

In summary I don't even know the genre of this film. It did not have any sort of message. It's confuse of what it wants to do. In fact it's kind of pointless. What are we suppose to get out from it? Both leads never got any character development. They just are the way they are from start to finish. Sighs.

To be fair its entertaining.
"It's Fun but it's Pointless" and not in a good way

Not something I would usually watch

I’ve been in a drama slump lately so I gave this movie a try. It was realistic and you could pretty much predict what was going to eventually happen. So you think! The ending though… I wasn’t expecting that. But I’m ok with it. Give it a try and watch how your emotions change throughout the movie.
I have to get to 500 characters so I guess I must continue here..The acting was pretty good on all parts and I loved seeing some of the usual actors that normally play the parents too. The music was decent, nothing extraordinary.

Special

A movie starting as a comedy with many sweet points (e.g. nurse kissing the bag of saline fluid and telling the patient that it is a special treatment for his faster recovery), with the right cast (don't only look at the leads, the mom and dad and the hospital room mates, and the head nurse, ... just great), turns into a tragedy as everything is collapsing.
Or so it seems.
The movie maker had fooled us all along!
You have to watch it again to look at the details: when the ring went missing, when this and that.
A masterpiece, including the very matching musing to the moment when the mask fell and the truth became revealed.
One question, which I don't see people asking, and my answer is a nay: did she get the abortion? I think she got to keep the child, and the folks who give poor ratings to this movie completely missed the personality of the nurse.

Wow a waste of 1 hour and 47 minutes

PLOT

The story had so much potential to be good but it lost it on the way . You would think the story is about a couple that breaks up but it a whole other story . And it's just every where. Like the female lead gets pregnant but she ends up losing the baby and they don't even touch on that subject . You hear about it when the main couple fights towards the end .

CHARATERS
. THE FEMAL LEAD HAS NO GROUND . SHE IS SO WEAK THAT ITS IS SO BAD.SHE MAKES YOU WANT TO SLAP HER ACROSS THE FACE SO THAT SHE CAN WAKE UP . AND SHE FALLS IN LOVS SO EASILY (just be sick and treat her good and she falls in love with you )
MALE LEAD WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN . THAT MAN IS A WALKING RED FLAG . THE FACT THST HE COULD NOT TELL HIS GIRLFRIEND THAT HE IS HAVING A HARD TIME AT WORK AND JUST BE HONEST THAT HE WAS NOT HAPPY ABBOUT THE FACT THAT THEY WHERE ABOUT TI HAVE CHILD WAS SO CHILDISH. AND HE COLULD NOT TELL HIS FEMALE CO WORKER TJAT SHE HAD A LADY IN HIS LIFE WAS ALSO WRONG . THINK HE DOES NOT LIKE THE IDEA OF BEING ALONE THAT IS WHY HE JUMPS FROM ONE GIRL TO THE OTHER .

CONCLUSION.
DONT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS MOIVE IT WILL ONLY MAKE YOU MAD . BAD BAD BAD

This is not a simple romance.

If you are looking for something fairytale-ish or you're watching "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" and thought that this film would be the candy that you need in your life... I'm sorry. THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE! That's said, let's beginning.

"Sweet and Sour" tells the love story of Jeong Da Eun (Chae Soo Bin), a nurse that works very hard but found out the sweetness in the little things of her life. One of them is Jang Hyuk (Jang Ki Yong), her boyfriend who loves her pretty much. After getting a promotion in his job, Jang Hyuk needed to move to Incheon, and there he meet Han Bo Yeong (Crystal), an ambitious woman who will mess up his head. When I started the movie, I was pretty sure that it will be a lovely story about pure love and hold on tight in your conviction, but it turns out very different. I won't give spoilers here, but I'll try to describe what I think this movie is really about.

I saw many people saying that the story was superficial and nonsense, but I think that everything was made to be that way. The superficiality was what we need to develop the characters in our mind, and give to them the burden that we thought was right. We made deductions following the formula of the perfect romance, and then the end comes and punches our face.

I think this movie was made to show that the life in fact isn't just sweet, that we have sour things that cross by, and it that. The frustration that I experienced was based on my own expectations and my idea of perfection. I wanted to see perfection in a relationship that wasn't perfect at all. This made me think a lot that we really only see what we wanna see.

For me, this movie was a pretty good one (★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★). It wasn't the best script in some moments or the best edition either, but the idea was very good. If you are looking for a simple romance, stay away from this.

See you soon,
Mari.

BIG LETDOWN

In the beginning, i thought i'd like the movie. But there are so many reasons why i gave this one a 1 star.

First of all, the star is for Chae Soo-Bin, whom I love as an actress. The rest, zero.

Reasons why I rate this one so low:

1. I hate cheaters.
2. I hate Jang Hyuk all around.
3. I hate his female colleague for keep trying to seduce him
4. I hate the old man who kept trying to hook them up.
5. Hate that Jang Hyuk still slept with his stupid coworker; he was caught up in his emotions and not man enough that he went with his lust after fighting with poor Da-eun.
6. WTF what about Da-Eun's pregnancy?! They were just gonna leave us hanging?! Poor girl
7. When the twist happened, I thought something good was going to come out of it, but NOPE. Did absolutely nothing.

Sweet & Sour is your typical rom-com, but that does not mean it's bad.

The problem that many couples face today is how they can survive in a highly industrialized and work focused society. It is no wonder that couple success rates are lower and lower each year, since so many struggle to balance their life in terms of work and love. So, are you willing to sacrifice your job for your relationship? That is the not so simple question this film poses.

This film simply shows you how easily a huge workload can tear your relationship, especially a long-distance one. This isn't done in a revolutionary way, but it is interesting enough that it'll want you to keep watching. It might even make viewers rethink their values and life choices. And it has a nice little twist at the end that I'm sure many will enjoy.

The overall atmosphere of this movie is cosy and the cinematography and music are good but, again, nothing revolutionary.

I would recommend you to watch this during a rainy afternoon when you don't have much to do, and when you might be feeling a bit down. That's exactly what I did, and it even made me shed a few tears.

A bit sweet. More sour!! The Plot twist was like WT*!

Was shocked and suddenly got confused with the plot twist. But still. The plot twist is a good one.

It's hard to give it a review without mentioning any spolier. But I'll try to review without giving much.

The ML is really a douchebag. Although initially I appreciate the efforts he is doing for the FL even though he's busy. I also appreciate that he didn't easily give in to temptation. BUT, BUT he becomes the worst character. He started lying, started to reason out just to cancel dates and then cheated.

Beoyoung, I think, is a character that's just wants a casual relationship. She and the ML happens to be colleague so she just had fun. And that's it. Nothing serious for her, just something casual.

And then FL, at first it was like the FL was leading the fat guy patient . And I feel like her feelings was not sincere. Maybe, she's just switching her attention to him because she felt lonely.

I guess I really can't blame the FL. But still, what she did is still cheating. And maybe because she really needed the attention. I felt bad for the fat guy patient. She's just using him.

I was hopping for the ML and FL to end up together because I feel like they genuinely like each other. It's just that there are circumstances that's making it hard for their relationship to work out. I was happy when the ML rushed to FL to propose. But was totally disappointed when he learned about the FL's other guy. And then he rushed back to the party and then proposes to another girl. Like WTH, I thought he really loves the FL and he was just tempted. Turns out he's a total jerk.

So there, if you like story about cheating you can try watching it.

I, somehow, in some ways enjoyed it a bit. The story is just so wrong. I mean, cheating is just SO WRONG. Although it happens in real life.

Slice of life with a twist !!

This movie has great cast both lead & supporting ones are all familiar faces , Who obviously did well in their respective roles . This movie didn’t reach my expectations. Rather than a story It feels like collects of events . This is All about work - life balance & priorities in life . The Director instead of preaching audience left it for us to judge the characters.
Also there is a twist in the movie which is hard to guess .
Overall I felt this may not be a great movie but u can definitely watch it once .

lots of issues

The thing I enjoyed about the film was Chae Soo-bin and Jang Ki-yong's chemistry and I think that's all I can say in terms of positivity.

The trailer for the film is completely misleading. I understand that they did this so that people wouldn't expect the "plot twist" but the problem with this is that it can leave the target audience somewhat bewildered. It advertises itself as a rom-com which is a genre that typically women enjoy to see their idealised version of romance. The film's objective of wanting to present the realism of love and life reminds me of 500 days of Summer. They're not the same but kind of have that same feeling of "things just don't work out" but the trailers of the movie are different. It doesn't target an audience group that are bound to be disappointed in the ending which is why I have such mixed feelings on the ending. While I understand the ending is realistic, I am still disappointed and unsatisfied with it especially since it is hinted that both leads are still in love with each other. But honestly I feel like it only touches on the surface level of realistic relationships. I think it may be due to the constant fluctuating between serious, realism and rom-com. Some parts of it are so comical that it wouldn't be crazy to believe that despite everything, we'd still get a happy ending. That's not to say that you can't have a realistic movie with comedic elements; the movie just doesn't balance the serious and comedy that well, leaving me with mixed emotions.

Like I've commented before, I think a lot of people will be dissatisfied with the ending in terms of the pairings. The leads are clearly still in love with each other and rebounding so if you were watching for Krystal and rooting for her (which I don't really understand why you would other than your bias towards the actress), I'm sorry but the male lead was essentially rebounding/settling for her and that relationship was all based on temptation and lust.

I didn't like that they glossed over what the female lead was going through on an emotional level. But I guess that could be excused as the film being mostly from the male's perspective. Despite the lack of perspective from the female lead, I really sympathised with her. Honestly the plot twist is basically just a superficial shocker; my feelings and opinions for the leads didn't change. I still sympathised with her despite everything because she was being emotionally neglected by the male lead. so you can understand why she was essentially "unfaithful". I don't condone it but I understand where she's coming from. For god's sake, she was pregnant and then got an abortion. Him complaining about how he was still making an effort to see her despite it being an inconvenience was not it for me. He basically led her to believe and have expectations that he was committed to her emotionally and everything when that was not the case as he was wavering in the workplace.

Even though I'm complaining a lot about the male lead, I still don't hate his character lol which is ironic. I think Jang Ki-yong is so charismatic that it's difficult to hate his character which I guess is a good aspect of the film. The characters aren't categorised as bad or good because that's simply not how life works. Yes, the characters made mistakes and had their wrongdoings but those are seen as flaws, something very much of human nature.

Overall, the only reason I would watch this film again would be to see the chemistry between Chae Soo-bin and Jang Ki-yong. Hopefully they get to work together again in the future.

Wow I just finished this movie 5 minutes ago but I think I need more time to really process everything that I have watched.

First of all, I really really love the casting of this movie!!!! Looking back, I think that was the reason why I watched it in the first place. Aside from that, I love that it's under the genre rom-com. After watching a lot of heavy dramas consecutively, I've been craving me some romcom dramas/ movies.

I really liked how they portrayed the characters here, it was really close to reality. Even the relationship and careers of the main characters were portrayed really realistically. But the reason why I didn't give this a perfect score was because of the last part of the movie.

I honestly think the last part can be debatable depending on where you stand. For some it can be considered as the perfect ending because they see the other "Hyeok" as someone who is perfect for our FL since he takes care of her and everything. However, for others (me included) it can be considered as a very unlikely and to some degree "unsettling" ending. I honestly find it weird that the FL tried to get close to her patient because of his name and when she found out that her patient likes her, she used it to her advantage. Some see them as the perfect couple, but honestly all I can think of is that the second "hyeok" is nothing but a rebound guy. Same thoughts on "Boyeong". She's nothing but a rebound girl.

But don't get me wrong, it actually made sense that there were two Hyeoks. I honestly didn't get why the character of Jang Ki Yong suddenly turned for the worst when in the first part he was shown as a very dorky loving guy.

The guys who acts like "cupid" (the security guy i think?) was also a weird part. Like where the heck did he come from? Why is he matchmaking? Why is he throwing all this wisdom to Hyeok? It was really weird and creepy.

But anyhow... it was an okay watch. As what they say, to each his own.

Now unto the next drama/movie!
