Confusing, Critical, Cringe, and Comedy!

I was genuinely interested in this movie because of the summary. To confess, I have not read the manga and watched the anime. I am not a fujoshi but I kinda knew what I was getting myself into.

Confusing - Now I really can't get the point of the movie, is it fanservice? is it the message that fat chicks can't get hot guys? I can't take away any point from this movie. It was purely filler content to pass away some 90 minutes of my life.

Critical- I do agree that being slender grabs eyeballs but making that a criteria for dating felt derogatory. Anyway, I'm placated by the ending given to the MC. Also, well, it could have been a fat princess in the school drama segment instead but that would miss the point of this movie.

Cringe- Can't separate cringe from these type of themed musicals. What really was biggest cringe is the exaggerated weight loss scenes and the fangirling scenes.

Comedy- It was the only good point of this movie given that the quality of production was low, acting was amateurish, story felt random. I laughed hard many times.

"Boys! Please Kiss Him, Instead of Me" is something utterly absurd movie to watch when you are utterly bored and even if you don't, you wouldn't have missed anything.

Well I watched this... When I found it i was sooooooo excited to watch it cos i LOVED the Anime. I knew things were gonna be different. But.. This was a TOTAL let down. I would NOT recommend this to someone who loved the Anime of Kiss Him Not Me. Acting was fine. Songs were fine. Everything else was an utter let down. Not worth the watch let a lone a re-watch, Nope. Just a big nope from me. If they make a new version I might consider watching it....

A hefty dose of fatphobia on a platter

First up I did not watch nor read the source material, this is solely based as a first time watcher of this movie on its own.

I watched this because i love Miu's acting and wanted to see her as a co-lead. Unfortunately with her being cast you can always somehow expect stereotypes and hatefulness to be the theme, even if underlying. I really thought I was prepared based on the synopsis but the fatphobia was even worse than anticipated.

Lines were dropped that truly had my mouth agape in shock, which is rare. They did try once or twice to get two of the guys to point out how superficial those statements were but not once did anyone mention how fucked up it really was nor did the other guys get taught any lesson. Instead it was pushed aside and they went straight back to the main issue pretending like suddenly it wasnt an issue anymore at all.

"I will make her lose weight. Her personality is great and we know she can be beautiful when she's thin" I wont forget that line for a long time, in the most negative sense.

As someone with an eating disorder, I felt shit watching this movie and i feel shit after, despite having enjoyed the comedy and music aspects. I used to be a Fujoshi as a teen so I did have some genuine laughs about the otaku behavior but unfortunately the joy wasnt allowed to stick. Everything else made me wanna throw up and actually made me respect Miu as an actress even more.

Japan has a lot to work on when it comes to beauty standards and fatphobia I know that but it is never an excuse. To watch this movie made in 2020 display fatphobia like its 2001 is honestly disgusting. I do not recommend watching this movie as i believe it to be extremely harmful for any young girls (as well as women with body image issues of all ages) who comes across this, and any other media with this premise.

Overall just a comedy movie pushing the superficial narrative that Japanese media loves: that being liked for your looks is a goal and that you will only be truly loved and persuaded when you're thin. They had the chance to teach a valuable lesson about everyone being beuatiful how they are as long as they are happy and that everyone deserves love, but they blew it. Garbage.

Anyway, this isnt related to the movie but always remember weight has nothing to do with beauty.

Not Good Enough

Japanese Movie " Boys! Please Kiss Him, Not Me " is an adaption from the anime under the same name.

And it does have that anime-manga feel. However, the story is all over the place. And, it is boring to boot. There is no point in it, no progress and no character develpment. Sure, the relationship betwee the girl and the boys is sweet and their dynamics on point, but their characters were one dimensional and typical soujou manga heroes.

The performances, on the other hand, were all enjoyable and the actors and actresses of the cast did a good job presenting their characters, even though the script didn't aid them.

So, overall, two out of ten.

They took inspiration from the manga and made it their own

I saw the anime ages ago and found it a quick cute watch so why not watch this.

Whoever plays Serinuma Kae is so cute, she's so expressive lol

Just a couple minutes in and we already had my fav 'legendary prince' Mutsumi! The actor is a pretty boy!

Why was the intro song kind of good...

Achan I love her the way she calls her cute Kae-chan<3 literally same person different fonts also her deep voice ahh~

'New' Kae is actually gorgeous, how come she has perfect white teeth and a beautiful smile like give them to me!!

MUTSUMI WITH GLASSES!!! also Shinomiya has always been fashionable, love both of their styles.

Forgot how much I enjoy Nishina, she is so androgynous and that was some beautiful dancing between her and Kae. Wish they had more of them like in the anime.

Still a fan of Igarashi, even though he was forced, him as a Prince got Kae fangirling so I'd say that was worth it.

Their reaction of her gaining weight is such an overreaction and fatphobic, makes me feel bad for her. Shinomiya literally fainted, y'all rude af. Plus the theatre kids are evil disqualify her cause of her weight I hope she doesn't help them ever again!

She should wear her hair down and no glasses more often though I kinda like the round glasses.

The little smile and nose scrunch Mutsumi did is so adorable when Kae showed interest in his historical wall, he is actually so good looking!

This is definitely different to the anime the foundation is kind of the same so I liked it nevertheless but Kae being a fushoji is a big part of her and the anime yet they left the bl like moments to the last 30 minutes of the movie, cmon!! Those moments was what made the anime weirdly unique and funny!!

The way we have a GoNana hug and the other 2 boys sit on the floor mesmerised they're actually funny.

Shinomiya and Nana forehead kiss!! Then bad boy Mutsumi with forward Shinomiya YESSS!! These girls have taste!! I'm glad they changed Shinomiya from the anime because he was annoying though I had a soft spot for him, this Shinomiya though... even I want to give him a chance.

I liked the quiz thing not gonna lie but she should've asked harder questions especially the last one, I thought Mutsumi was going to say Shion and be right lol.

I thought Mutsumi was going to win and tell her to take her time to pick who she likes as he'll be waiting and I was correct!! Love how understanding Mutsumi is <3

This ends in an open ending which I hate but the anime was the same, just gonna go read the manga I guess.

I don't want her to help the theatre group but I'd do anything for Nishina <3. Can't believe she turned the play into a bl... actually I can lol

I don't know why people were shitting on this though there are fatphobic comments and can be derogatory, the message is still somewhat pretty, you have to go with and open mind though. I think it's pretty good movie but that could be because I wasn't the biggest fan of the anime, it was just a short comedic anime to watch and also because I haven't seen in in years. again I need to re watch the anime but don't they give Mutsumi and Kae many scenes together not that I'm complaining, he accepts and understands her so well I could already tell she will pick him from the start but in the anime I was between him and Igarashi and only chose Mutsumi towards the end (which she ends up with in the manga by the way, first time I didn't pick the secondary love interest!!?)

This is different from the manga/anime if the plot wasn't the same I'd say its a completely different show. They took inspiration from the manga and made it their own, still enjoyed it as much as the anime and liked the musical like aspect and dancing! Wished they kept more of the comedic scenes that appeared in the anime.

The best way to put this is 'Kiss Him, Not Me' is the anime as she has these new found friendships while still being her perverted self and tries to literally get the guys to kiss each other not her but ends up falling for one of them while the movie is more 'Watashi ga Motete Dousunda' aka What am I going to do with this popularity? where she guides new friendships and relationships that she didn't have before and learns things she only ever witnessed, to her she'd always witness the world from a 3rd person perpective now she is in first. She learns new feelings and now has to be able to define them into categories like platonic and romantic while dealing with her new emotions, image and pretty priveledge.

Being loved by 4 Charming Boys…

I love this movie! The boys are charming and cute. The girl is so funny and kind!
There are some scenes that actually very similar with the anime versions.

If you love the reverse harem genre, and if you already watch the anime version or read the manga version.. you will like this live action version as well!

If you don't understand otaku world, you will be find yourself hard to love this movie since you can't relate with whatever situtions that happening there.

I love that each boy has their own characters and their own way to show their care to the girl. At the end.. they are fall in love with the girl for who she is.. not because of her look. This drama teach us about how to see the inner beauty and to understand the otaku life. The musical part in the beginning and end of the show are very entertaining and fun. Love it!

P.S. I like the way they end it.. it’s an open ending.. all the boys are stick together to be around her and protect her… so they leave it to the audience imagination about who’s gonna be chosen as boyfriend by female lead in the future.

Hilariously cringy

Although this is a very (very) lightweight movie, I had a few laugh out loud moments. The lead actresses (it's one role played by 2 girls) are very funny.

The boys are incredibly beautiful and look like they stepped out of a manga. Since the lead girl is a fujoshi, this is just perfect for her to ship everyone with each other.

As happens in Japanese dramas, there's a lot of emphasis on looks and that's fine. They kind of tried to work in a message of 'it's your heart that counts' but it falls a bit short.

I would have loved if she ended up with the one guy who really seems to get her and know her heart. But no-one ends up with anyone. Shame.

There are some loose ends (why does the guy just get up and leave, what happened between him and his former gf?) but I really had fun watching this.

Does not follow the anime storyline.

Kiss Him Not Me is my favorite anime so I was thrilled when I heard about the live action, but frankly, it's on of the worst dramas ever.
The main thing that confused me was the fact that Nishina wasn't even apart of the group of boys and the people asking her to be in a play was not included in the anime, why would they add it here? The movie was extremely cringey and the music was completely egregious. Honestly the only thing I liked about it was the fact that they portrayed Nanashima x Shinomiya correctly lol.

High School Musical, but make it Japan

Similar to "Love Is Hard For Otaku," I really wish this wasn't a musical. With both movies, I was really looking forward to seeing a live-action of an anime I really loved. However in both, instead of getting more of the story, there was time wasted on random (and unnecessary) dance numbers. "Fufu-girl" was a catchy and fun song, but it could've been reduced to a cute title sequence, and then the full number at the very end of the movie as a bonus. Despite some other alters to the story, the actors did well with what they were given. I also enjoyed getting to see Hokuto in another role. So it was good, but definitely could've been better.

Fun and light fanfic-like reverse harem movie: a bit frustrated by the ending cop-out

This movie is about a fujioshi (= a person who has a strong passion for Yaoi stories and shipping male characters from anime/manga together) who becomes very popular at her highschool after undergoing some drastic physical transformation. This film is an adaptation from a reverse harem manga with the female lead being pursued by 4 male suitors. After watching it, I must say I would be interested to read the manga, especially given the ending of the film (which felt a bit like a cop-out) and to discover the end game in the original version.

The message and morale of the story is a bit unclear and blurry. The scenario seems to denounce some toxic behaviors but reinforce/affirmate some others. The saving grace for me is that there are wrongdoings on both sides of the various relationships/pairings: both female and male characters are flawed and excert some eyebrow-raising actions. The whole script is lighthearted, so despite the cringe factor and the predictibility of the tale, it is also super fun...Almost like a fanfic becoming alive. There is a lack of subtlety for sure as well as too much levity and naivety regarding some situations, which did not prevent me to really enjoy the watch.

The casting was adequate. The MVP was clearly Yoshino Hokuto playing the role of one of the suitor: senpai Mutsumi Asuma. I might be biaised as he played my favorite character, in any case, I will be really looking forward watching this actor in other works. The two actresses playing the heroine were fun as well, despite some overacting. There were not a lot of opportunities for any of the cast to have strong and deep moments, so acting was suitable but not impressive overall.

The production was okay for a high school movie, it felt a bit cheap at time but there were also some good sequences, particularly for some of the musical numbers / theatre moments. The OST was not memorable but very pop and fitting with the concept of the film.

I would recommend this to people looking for a fun and light high school movie with a reverse harem trope. It is really not deep and there are quite a bit of problematic elements not addressed at all, the morale/message is unclear with an ending that feel like a cop-out...But despite all the flaws, it is a really entertaining and enjoyable watch.

it's a musical ??

To be honest when I found out that there was a live action movie to kiss him, not me I was so excited. I watched the anime a few years ago and I remember just loving everything about it. I went into the movie sort of already knowing the whole plot but really excited to see what differences or changes they may have made.
However, I did NOT expect to see serinuma break out into song and dance ???? Literally wtf. That was not at all what I expected. The singing and songs were super cringy and I get that she was trying to narrate what she felt but it just wasn't working for me.

I also felt that the acting was really cringe and fake. Especially from the boys, their acting was super stiff and it was just extremely uncomfortable to watch tbh. I think maybe the cuteness and 'kawaii' serves better in anime than in a live action? And also maybe I wouldn't have been as tough of a critic if I had watched this when I watched the anime at the age of like 13.

Overall, the acting was just super cringe and uncomfortable. The breaking out into song also was not a plus and made the whole movie really awkward to watch. I really wish that they had adapted it into a more normal high school romance type live action but I get that serinuma was already quite eccentric in the anime so they just tried to duplicate that energy. I think that it just didn't work this time, especially because it wasn't an anime anymore, it was a live action.

Fun, light, and filled with cute handsome boys.

Coming into this i already knew how the endings going to be. But i was expecting something else that could maybe change the story to somewhat "better". But its exactly the same as the anime, but i don't know why the anime version is more amusing to me. The FL in this live action version, kinda annoys me especially when she's too caught up in her own "world".

The male characters are okay, i wish there was more time for us audience to get to know them a little bit better, because i caught my self only paying attention to one of the four ML.but visually they all looked really handsome though.

In conclusion i'd give this a 7.5.
If you're looking for something funny, and light you will like this, because regardless of a few "what the hell" moment, i still enjoy this movie.
