very beautiful plot

There are indeed some spoilers in this review but i'll try warn it everytime it's a spoiler, so people who hasn't watched the drama yet can read my review without being spoiled!

Not to lie, it took me a lot of time before starting it. I saw a lot of comments saying it becomes boring quite quickly, and what I hate the most is when a drama has a very good potential and wastes it. Why did I still watch it? Mostly because it's Park Bo Young and Seo In Guk, also because it's "the unloved one and the loving one" trope (my favorite). I wanted to give it a try and wow, I did well! Because I totally enjoyed it!

Why do some dramas become a hit while others are unloved is still a big mistery for me. I mean, this drama was (in my opinion) way better than Tale of The Nine-Tailed, with a real plot, and some very very interesting morals. The characters were realistic, the story was beautiful, and everything made sense. No big plot hole. Yet why do people keep saying it's boring or bland or not original???
It was original.
First, because when there are stories with the "good and the bad" trope, it's usually "the god and the devil". They usually are ennemies. But here, it's about a deity and the Doom itself : they're not ennemies, they work together, and humanity needs both. This was original.
It was not the classical "she was born to make you discover feelings" or "she was born to make you die" or "she was born to be your bride" or "she has the same face as your first love" or "she is the reincarnation of some old relationship". Those are all the classical tropes we see in a fantasy world with a immortal guy. Yes, they were kind of destined, but they were destined because of their choices, because of who they were, and because they would always make the same choices. She hasn't been not the "choosen one" since birth, as in most of fantasy dramas. She became the choosen one because of what she chooses, because of who she is, and that's original. The only fantasy drama with this trope was Hotel Del Luna and that's why I loved Hotel del Luna that much.
Also, it was not the usual "he can't feel anything and you will change it". He has always been able to feel things, he has always been able to be sad and happy, but he chose not to, because he didn't want to make it more difficult for him. He didn't allow himself to feel things because if so, he would always be sad, seeing what happens "because" of him. And the girl did change him, because she showed him how human he was inside of him.
(SPOILER)This is what it is about. It's not about some surnatural being becoming human because of a girl, it's about a surnatural being discovering he has always wanted to be human but didn't allow himself to do so.(SPOILER END)

Yes, there were some "WTF" moments and useless things.
(SPOILER) By which i mean the two episodes with the amnesy trope. That was a shame, cause it was long and kind of useless. A short amnesy would have been okay, cause it would show they would always make the same choices, and that's sensible. But two episodes? With almost nothing but parallels? Yes, it was kind of boring, and I used the "skip" button quite a lot during those (which is why I rated the plot with 8.5, cause it would deserve at least a 9 without the amnesia-thing). I also saw people who thought it was stupid to see Myul Mang running to Dong Kyung and, let's be honest, it was kind of weird indeed. But then again, I wonder if it wasn't some kind of symbolic.
(SPOILER) After all, he was slowly starting to become a human through the drama (which was shown by the flower-symbolic), and that may be why he started to act a lot more as a human. (SPOILER END)

So yeah, it became less and less fantasy. The drama was a lot more about their love story and Dong Kyung point of view on life that all the "deity and doom" thing : and that's why I loved it so much. No need to have some big enormous plot to be a good story. I enjoyed so much seeing Dong Kyung going from "the one who never cries and never tells what she wants" to "the one who allows herself crying and asking to be saved".
(SPOILER) I don't remember exactly what was said but at some point of the drama, it was all about "you must accept doom in your life, so that luck comes too". Luck and Doom comes with the same face. If you forget everything about the love story, and only focus on the symbolic of things, the whole story is about a girl accepting her fate, as hard and sad it is, and because she was brave enough to accept it all, she ends up happy. And I think this is what the drama is all about, and that's why I found it so beautiful. (SPOILER END)
I love dramas with deep meanings, with double-reading, and this one was perfect for me.
I think people should try to watch the drama and make their own opinion about it. If I only read the comments about the drama, I wouldn't have watched it and I would have missed something.

Doomed!

Park Bo Young, I love this actress, who played a strong leading role in this Korean Drama. The role she played as Tak Dong Kyung and what this character had to go through. Seo In Guk, oh gosh, who is the actor? I mean I am looking forward to watching more dramas he is playing or going to play in. I viewed his itinerary and noticed he plays demon characters. His eyes though, omg, I can see why but those eyes are beautiful in shape and form. I would love to see him as the main lead in fantasy, and martial arts, as the historical minister of the military. BTW his acting was very convincing. Lee Soo Hyuk: I am seeing him in a lot of recent KDramas. I love his acting. I hope the next character he plays he will catch the love of his life. The visuals, the fantasy, I loved. I did love the storyline, it was different. I think we are all living in Doom right now.

Love it! Already watched it three times!

The fact that I’ve watched it three times says it all. The cinematography is truly beautiful. It makes great use of slow motion and colour, and the production looks very high-quality.

The actors are amazing, especially in the emotional scenes. ML and FL have great chemistry.

The soundtrack always gets to me, particularly “Breaking Down” by Ailee, which I also listen to in my free time.

Unfortunately, the drama has a bit of a slow, somewhat tedious part in the middle for me, since the second couple doesn’t really captivate me.

Overall, this is a show I can watch over and over again.

I will start with what I like about this series. The leads aren't the typical flawless Korean actors that we see in most series, and given their character types, I think that is an excellent decision. They are attractive, but not perfect and I find that their flaws add to the story. The story is very engaging. I'm sure at some point each of us has felt desperate or angry enough to make a wish for it all to just end. This series allows us the opportunity to see what would happen if there was an actual consequence to that wish and possible follow through. Now, the biggest thing I can't stand so far is that you can tell the writer/production team doesn't care for Americans. As an American, I am having to overlook that as much as I can and attempt not to cringe every time they use "is he American" as a derogatory statement/question. I would never use any nationality as a way to speak negatively about someone, but they do... a lot. I love the visuals and the original soundtrack is one of the best I've heard yet. The music really draws you into the moment. Overall I really loved this drama.

best second lead storyline

first of all, i'm a fan of Lee Soo-hyuk. attracted to both his visuals & amazing voice.
I watched this drama mainly due to him, loves his role here. Quirky, smartar** with amazing comeback, and of course the ever confidence in his pursue of the second female lead.

there are shortclips in youtube as a summary for the second leads romance storyline, which I occasionally rewatched.
Aint no man exist in real life. His dedication & devotion to the woman he likes.

drama OST is also a big yes. Ailee's powerful voice brings up the feel everytime i listen.

Another beautiful kdrama that I had a lot of fun with. I enjoyed every moment and cried here and there. It's a typical beautiful romance with a hint of the supernatural that almost everyone will like. Once again, the actors did not disappoint and their choice was great. The overall plot was interesting and as most people have already said, I'll agree, it's a bit similar to My Demon, so if you liked that, you'll like this one too. I can't forget to mention that this kdrama has a wonderful ost, seriously. I haven't found any kdrama with such a wonderful ost yet. I can really recommend it again and again, because it's worth it. And as I wrote before, it's one of the other beautiful kdrama that will grab your heart, you'll fall in love with both the main and secondary characters (because they were also important there and I hope I experienced their lives more than the main ones, but that doesn't matter XDD we'll skip that)

Its Not Your Average Fantasy Drama

Yes, Its just not your average fantasy drama. I've seen many of them and by far this is one of the best.

I love how the story being put together. It may seem a bit slow but for me it was just nice.
The first 2 episodes got me hooked real bad that I began following it every week. I watched it with the expectation of a sad ending. But the writer decide otherwise. This drama gave a very subtle ending. Its kinda rare for Kdrama-land to give a satisfying ending to most of the important characters (usually only the main ones).
I think the message from this drama is.. whats meant to be will happen regardless and those fated together will always end up together.

Here in the drama there's two main couples (sort of). Where each of their lives intertwined each other and eventually became sort of family.

The actors:
The chemistry between Seo In Guk (SIG) and Park Bo Young (PBY) were super amazing. You can see this on their behind-the-scene clips in youtube.
SIG portrayed his character well, being "Doom" (the destroyer) he had to have cold eyes and expression and he nailed it. SIG acting skills never disappoint and this drama just another prove of how amazing he is.
PBY is cute, bubbly and super friendly. I liked her character here as Tak Dong Kyung a lot. A selfless, patient and caring person that she is always putting everybody else above her. Thats why Myeol Mang always said that he existed for her, as if the Deity's is rewarding her for her good deeds in life.

Lee So Hyuk (LSH), Shin Do Hyun (SDH) and Kang Tae Oh (KTO) chemistry are also another reason to watch this drama. Each of them portrayed their character well.
LSH often play very cold characters in dramas/movie. So this time he has a cold look but soft heart character which kinda suit him pretty well. And finally.. He got the girl in drama-land. The way he look at SDH character (Na Ji Na) is so sweet. His eyes seems like shooting hearts at her and he speak softly only at her. Whilst he is being all prickly with other people.
SDH is very good at portraying her character. A quirky yet kind-hearted towards her percious Tak Dong Kyung. She is like the older sister who protects her siblings. I also love how she is very endearing towards Sun Kyung although he is not her real siblings.
KTO well he is just super cute and handsome especially when he smiles. His acting in "Run On"was my favourite but lets add this one as well. He portrayed it really well. Although in this drama he came out a little bit spoilt but he managed to grew up in the end and be a responsible adult.

Lastly not forgetting Dawon (SF9) as Sun Kyung, the annoying yet caring little brother. I love how he grow close pretty quickly to SIG and LSH taking them both as his brother in law. He is super protective of his sisters (yes he take Ji Na as his real sister) although he can be annoying and joker some times.

Overall.. all actors portrayed their characters very well.
I've read a lot of negative review on this drama. But have a look yourself just the first 2 eps.. see if you like it. For me the story is just as warming and nice as it is. Again its not your average kdrama.
Not all fantasy dramas are good but this is one to look out for because it gives you warmth and smiles as you watch it.
Oh and the OST are super good. SIG sings one of it and I read somewhere that he wrote the lyrics himself. The song is very touching and has nice tunes to it. Have a listen to it. (Title: Distant Fate by Seo In Guk).

Perfect combination of romcom and drama

It was lighter than I expected, but it kept me at the edge of my seat. I was hooked immediately by the first episode and I was glued until the very end. Pacing was good, the writing was consistently progressive, and I love its portrayal of the reality of how fickle human emotion can be (I think it was between Episodes 1-4). I found myself laughing really hard, ugly crying at some parts, and swooning over so many scenes. It's near the likes of Goblin and some details reminded me of My Roommate is A Gumiho (though this was released first), but it was unique in its own way and I think I like this a tad bit more. Plus, casting was perfect and so was the distinct OST. Masterpiece. I love it so much and definitely something I'm recommending to friends.

Deep emotions , perfect acting game, !

Recommend ! if u like deep emotions and serious characters + different shades of emotions - this is what u need !
in East Eu websites this serie has 14980 rating likes ! its mean - yeah all these thousands people watched it and appreciated !
Biggest plus is : perfect acting game , charismatic talented actors , interesting plot which dont let u understand what kind of final will be. I think that is perfect , because u can think every episode by urself different finals .. the most I like , of course , how played Seo In Guk , his character more serious in my opinion , because as he ain't human he trying feel and feels much emotions than main female character Don Gün ..I think he more suffered in the series , he cant help her as he / she wish .. he jus did his best and finally he appeared with her ( what is so surprised me into good reason )
Even support role characters did well their job on acting ! coz all was harmonically in every episode ( even if I didnt like some moment on scenario) ( am usually carefully analyze that what I watch coz I like not only have satisfaction from serie but analyze the acting game and etc )) so I didn't like a little the main female character on scenario , she not too serious about what she has and she not so care about Kim Sa Ram in last episodes when he became a human .. why ? coz if u long time suffered about to be survive and not lost ur love .. finally u alive but still suffer about u lost ur boyfriend and , when he finally appeared ( u have 2 chance ) u must care about him and spend with , every second ( logically yea ) but she didn't .. as he will never disappear again .. also very beautiful music. I think all was harmonically cool in that serie , songs , sound tracks , they helped to feel the atmosphere .. I think the general idea of the serie not jus fantasy line as genre which we must take it but something more deeply serious about everyone can understand for themselves in serie ..

This set my standards higher than it is supposed to be :)

I have been a fan of kdrama since 2009 so I sometimes become choosy on watching kdramas these days. However, this drama surprised and impressed me in a lot of ways. Story wise, it has a great plot, well-written, and balanced. I really wanna commend the casting, because the lead couple turned out to have such a great chemistry. Their friendship is different, and on screen, they seemed to help each other become the best in their character. Not gonna forget the other casts, of course, because they also made the drama more fun. Oh and the OST? One of the best! I even bought the OST Album cd :) and even when I finished watching it, I tend to miss them and watch different scenes over and over, as well as the behind the scenes. Sorry if you feel I am exaggerating, but this is really how I felt after watching the drama. My attachment to them has become too much that I couldn't even move on lol. Worth your time, swear!
