Engaging! Intriguing!

I went with vibes for this drama - what I meant was that the vibes exuded by this drama were positive and the reviews were good too.

I highly recommend this drama!

Watch because:
- the show is fast-moving
- there are plenty of ‘solving problems’ parts which I find very engaging as it keeps me wondering how Ning Yi will solve the different problems that keep popping up
- Ning Yi isn’t tall and handsome like other male leads out there but he suits his role very well and is likable as the male lead (he is a complex character though)
- the female lead is very pretty and the other female actresses are good lookers too
- the plot is engaging on the whole
- the other four matrilocal husbands are cute in their own ways too and watchable

What I don’t like:
- Su Tan Er’s male cousin and uncle are Dumb and Dumber - so annoying
- putting women down as incapable and overlooking women’s skills and abilities (just because they are women is unreasonable and sexist) (good that women thrive and overcome the odds in the drama and are the ones who call the shots by marrying the men instead of men marrying them)
- some parts were a little confusing (to me)
- some characters were extremely annoying

But, the good overrides the bad by leaps and bounds. WATCH! It’s a fun ride!

Only good as filler

Without having watched JOL, these casts were new to me, however there are some good support casts in this series.

This series started out as an illogical slapstick comedy with some new ideas and concepts, but its hard to digest if you are trying to make sense of things. But thru out the 36 episodes, there are still some interesting comedy moments but just no LOL moments for me.

Mid to late episodes of this drama is when it gets bad, with the bandit arc, the death of my favorite bearded male servant, the divorce of ML and FL so that ML can marry the bandit chieftain. It just gets draggy and not funny anymore, so it becomes a grind just to get to the ending.

So for a series that relies on the story /plot to be successful, this series for me, did not had that. In a way it reminds me of one of those harem anime, where every female seems attracted to the ML, but since ML lacks in the looks department, this becomes hard to convince or sell to viewers. Since it does not have a relatable /good looking /great acting ML or many scenes with the FL, the romance and chemistry factor for this drama is also pretty low. In fact during the same airing period, I much prefer the rom com in "The Wolf Princess". The OST is also pretty poor with nothing memorable.

This drama is still fine as a filler, if there's nothing else on your list.

GIVE IT A WATCH

One thing I have learned since I started using this site is that a drama with too many hyping and rating is bad and the good ones are the ones with low rating. Most people aren't watching this drama because the male lead is not up to their standard of pretty boy, they rather watch a drama because of how popular and pretty the actor is than actually watch an actor with good acting. This was my first time of seeing this actor, I haven't watch any of his drama before, I just saw the synopsis and decided to give it a go and I'm glad I did, it's an enjoyable drama with fun and the main theme which is DRAMA itself. The lack of romance wasn't a problem because it was never about romance but about a business man who uses his cleverness for good, someone that can't fight physically but make up for it with his brains. It was refreshing and good, comical and serious as well. I don't regret watching it and was happy to have stumbled upon it. I do hope we leave out stigma and actually enjoy something for the good and better performance that it is.

Compilation My Heroic Husband to Joy of Life

Most of actors were from drama Joy of Life. Gao Qi Lin and Song Yi were brother and sister while Gao Shu Guan was their dad. Kind of creepy when you know these were sibling in Joy of Life while in this drama they are husband and wife...now that Joy of Life is in the process of filming season 2-3...they'll be back again to original roles as sibling. That's just twist things in between roles (come on....make it right!). This is like a group syndicate of Zhang RuoYun and party, they hired same casts for different dramas, like they've contract from the same agency to act with the same people (and similar base line of story).

Anyway, I love Gao Qi Lin, he's adorable. Cheerful smile and delivered his dialog fluently. He's awesome as a little brother, in this drama though he's a husband married into wife's family, who knew that he's so super intelligent that help establish wife's business (and later into politic) with modern strategic ideas. The main idea of story line was like another type of Joy of Life background, a modern man in which time traveled back to many dynasties ago, who used their knowledge and wisdom to the advantage in ancient times. Joy of Life is my favorite drama but I am not so fond watch same old same story line...then...I dropped it. The more I watched it the more stupid the story become...there's no mystery there...at the beginning it's funny and fun but not at all when the episode progress...

BETTER than JOY of LIFE

I stumbled upon this dramedy after watching joy of life.
ML is actually funny & outshines everyone.
Contrary to most reviewers I liked the second half more, the father son duo was a little over the top but still funny.
After being disappointed by numerous shows with high ratings like ashes of love I was pleasantly surprised to find this little gem.
N.B. many people seem to be turned off by the harem tag / ML & 2nd lead slow burn romance. But isn't it like in real life where you get attracted to different people but still choose to not act upon it!

Excellent and interesting story, weak villains (but great faceslapping fun)

Yes I watched Joy of Life, and so I decided to watch this since they share one producer and much of the cast.

Overall, the story is excellent and mind games are very good, very much on par with Joy of Life. The only big weakness is that the villains in this story are quite two dimensional, and it's really just a giant faceslapping event when it comes to their defeat. Sometimes, their defeats are also quite anticlimactic.

I actually quite liked the bandit arc personally speaking. Also great humour throughout the series.

There's no scifi element which is good, as it's what I didn't really like about Joy of Life lol.

All plot points are resolved by the end, except for one that intends to introduce a second season. I'm looking forward to it.

If you enjoy transmigration stories with mind games, absolutely check it out.

Wow, just wow!!! A Drama that is my cup of tea

I love watching these type of drama where the ML comes and save the FL everytime. It's almost like an episodic FL pinch resolution per episode. ML comes and save her and it's pretty cliche in a way but at the same time unique to keep you interest. Mind you, I only watch the first 10 episode and fell in love with this series and hope for it to drag out longer and longer. Hope you guys find it enjoying as I am. One thing for sure it has a little similar like Joy of Life. Give the first 2 episode a shot and see if you enjoy the concept of this.

Update, I still enjoyed the second half of the series even though it kinda steer out of the episodic husband save the day routine but kept the interest of wanting to know what happen next. Hope for season 2.

Time travel's my cup of tea

LIKE

Su family's cousin and uncle and those humourous bandits as well

Modern ideas incorporated into ancient era - impressed how Ning Yi thought of all that

DISLIKE

Probably the lack of chemistry between Ning Yi and Tan Er - but then again this is not romance

MUSIC

Nice but not my fav

Light hearted entertainment

The backdrop setting of this drama reminds me of Luoyang but the mood is entirely different. It is more light hearted with a slant towards a comedy and yet not quite one as there are not enough humour to make it so.

As a whole, the story is interesting as it features a man teleported in time to an ancient time where he pits his wit in a family he is married into as a matrilocal son-in-law. Eventually he is drawn into politics as a group of bandits raids and captures the commercial and strategic centre of the country while he is visiting with his wife and friends. He is pulled in to uncover the real schemer and help save the city and bring peace to the country.

The cast acted well, but overall the production is quite average by today's standards in Chinese dramas. In a number of spot, the video was clumsily and obviously trimmed.

I would be interested to find out what happen to the male lead in modern times as he is shown to have been hit on the head as he confronts his business partner who has sabotaged him.

Although I won't rate it among the top league, it is worth watching if you have time to spare and are looking for something not too heavy.

Great start with some plot holes

Overall, the drama was entertaining, but, there was a visible disconnect between the first and second half.

The first half was a comedy telling a story of a modern man traveling back in time and helping his wife in ancient China succeed in business and navigate through family intrigue. Ning Yi reminded me of Forest Gump, a seemingly obscure individual full of great ideas. He used 21st century business techniques to grow the family business and undermine the competition, had an answer to everything, and helped a whole lot of people. It was clever, funny, and very entertaining. The uncle and cousin were funny caricatures and Wu Qihao was a great villain to root against.

The second half switched gears and became more of a political drama. I really did not care for the bandit arc. All the previous villains became irrelevant, and Wo Qihao was fully written out of the plot. The story wasn't as funny and interesting and it completely removed FL from several episodes. The new villains were boring and had no real motivation. Certain decisions made no sense and looked like the writers had no concrete idea how to move the plot forward. The story meant to be darker with more violence and death, but the writing was clumsy and made serious scenes look more lighthearted. Also, some plotlines absolutely did not need to be repeated. Taner was incredibly unlucky being almost raped twice. Here, the writers completely lacked any sense or imagination and force-fed us attempted rape scenes of the same character multiple times, instead of coming up with something new.

Certain arcs had plot holes. At the very beginning, ML used boxing techniques in a fight making it look like he was a skilled fighter. Later on the boxing techniques were mysteriously forgotten and he had to ask the assassin lady to teach him martial arts. She gave him one lesson without actually teaching him any martial arts and the story ended there making the whole thing utterly pointless.

The romance plotline was a minor side story. ML and FL were cute together and had chemistry. But, if you are looking for a romantic melodrama full of passion and angst, this is not it.

All over the place

I started this drama only because there were quite a few actresses/actors from Joy of Life, and it does have a bit of Joy of LIfe vibe. Sadly that's about it. The first 15 episodes were not that bad, but it went downhill quickly and culminated in a major cliffhanger for the ending. The cast was perfect, with the actors' looks matching their roles perfectly, but the acting in my opinion felt a bit forced. lines were not delivered naturally at all, and the translation on Prime Video was horrid...
Overall drama was all over the place, with few comical episodes followed by serious storytelling, but neither was executed that well.

Hopefully, I'm wrong, but this drama will suffer the same fate as Joy of Life, never to see a season two...
