Too much communism and propaganda - wouldn’t recommend it.
HuTong is an okay drama, and I only enjoyed the first 14 episodes when Zhao Lusi was in it. The remaining 22 episodes were about second and third generations, where the storyline was very much about the same. Tian Zao's daughter and granddaughter worked for the Communist government and cared for the Hutong Community. The major problem I had with this drama was the propaganda and the constant praise of the communist party. I escaped the communist regime for a better life in the USA, so to hear all the propaganda was annoying because I knew 50% of them were untrue.
I ended up fast-forwarding a lot of propaganda scenes, and in the end, I did not enjoy the drama that much.
I am giving it a 6.0 out of 10, the bulk credited to ZLS acting.

It could have been one of the greatest dramas.
In my own personal opinion I went into this drama fully expecting to see Chinese culture and history told through the view point of three different generations of a same family. However what I got was a Communist propaganda instead. While it’s true that the story was well written and the acting was beyond compare, without even speaking of the really awesome production, however throughout all the episodes there’s one thing that didn’t falter and that the politics. Honestly I really tried to enjoy the drama and ignore it, however it is basically impossible when all the drama talks about is how the Communist party is the party of the people. Does it really talk about the struggles of the people during these years, not really. Instead the drama attempts to constantly blindside the people true situations with the excuse of the greater good of the Chinese people being the communist party. Anyways I was expecting great things from this drama as there are a handful of my favorite actors in it, but instead I was highly disappointed. I am aware that China’s authoritarian government has control over what gets released, but I feel like the drama literally just tries to show the “supposed” great that the political party brought to the people instead of actually showing how the people lived throughout each period of time. Was this review helpful to you?

watched for Neo and Lusi, but I just can’t continue..
Zhao Lusi is one of my 2 fave Chinese actresses, so I was very excited to watch this drama. I also was recently introduced to Neo Hou and really liked his work, so big bonus to see them together..My problem with this show lies solely on the Communist agenda being applauded and revered at every turn, and basically crammed down our throats. I just can’t sit through the one-sided history this show portrays. The Chinese people suffered greatly during this time, but this show has citizens as only gung-ho Mao supporters, while they are starving, freezing to death, living in severe poverty, and under intense scrutiny for any sign of opposition in either word or deed that could cost them their life.
A true accounting of history shows both sides of story, backed up with facts, not what was displayed here, which feels more like fantasy fiction.
