It was okay. I stayed interested in the story until the end, but only really liked three of the characters. The others seemed shallow and one dimensional, with the exception of Choi Min Soo, Noh Min Woo, and Lee Won Jong.

The writers didn't take time to develop the characters, and relied on the story to keep the viewer interested, and to be fair, the story was good enough to succeed. But the actors mentioned above were, nonetheless, able to take their roles, and really bring them to life.

Personally, I thought the main character was a weak sap, the princess was a selfish brat, and the king was ... well, young Bojang.

Choi Min Soo, however, never fails to deliver, and Noh Min Woo puts in a spectacular performance. The most likeable character was the ever-lovable Lee Won Jong.
It was worth watching just for the three of them, and I have to admit, Uhm Tae Woong was pretty cool at the beginning of the show.

There is one scene, when the son (Uhm Tae Woong) finally understands his father, and that moment was very well written, nicely set up, and well acted.
It was poignant for me, as a viewer.

Perhaps surprisingly, I cheerfully recommend it. It's a good story worth watching.
I was very happy with the ending.

DOA

The late-2000s/early-2010s extreme edgy vibes were too damn strong with this one, from the awful OST and soundfx to the comical acrobatics and the pretentious attitude. Moreover, an obvious poor job from the directing department worth a slap on the wrist for their empty shots, lousy compositions, hasty transitions and un-cinematic pretentious edits with no purpose trying to mimic cinema as if they were following a template. This is not how you create a slow-burn. The leads story, their entangled relationship and their journey to fall in love all were the furthest thing from being natural and smooth. If the edgy writing full of cringe was playing against them then the directing was the cherry on top to cross the point of no return.

I love it! Well worth seeing

I decided to write this small review on MDL for the first time just to give support to this beautiful korean drama!
when I first saw the low rating of "Sword and Flower" , I hesitated if I would watch it , then I choose to give it a try ... and I never regret it.
It is an interesting melodramatic story with a great plot, full of emotional moments between the main characters. The cast is absolutely remarkable and well- balanced ... The music matches the events.
This drama is very beautiful however it is not for everyone.

The first 8 episodes should be 3 episode. There were far to many flashbacks and dozens of 30 second to 2 minute pauses. The only possible purpose was to add more episodes. Occasionally a pause can be for effect. However, dozens of lengthy pauses--one right after another--is a waste of the viewers time. However, after the fires 8 or so episodes there were far fewer unnecessary delays.

The basic story could be good if modified to be more realistic. The drama has a few major historical facts, but 95% is fiction and not even closely related to history. The last half dozen episodes go off the deep end with stuff impossible in real life. And, several of the episodes are horror episodes with excessive brutality. Without such extreme horror and brutality, I would have given the drama a higher rating.
