In May 1945, Dr. Taichi is instructed to help with surgeries of captive US soldiers, which are in fact human experiments. He suggests stopping the horrifying experiments, but they are carried out and cause the deaths of eight captives. In a war crimes trial, he is sentenced to death as the principal perpetrator of the incident. Reflecting on himself and being supported by his wife, who tries to help him avoid an unreasonable penalty, he finds the ‘real sin’ that he has to expiate.
