A love story between A Xia, a middle-aged Chinese man and A Tao, a Vietnamese girl. It opens in 1973 in Vietnam where young A Tao is living what appears to be an idylic life with her father but became mentally retarded after witnessing his killing. Flash forward to 1997 and A Tao works as a cleaner in a massage parlour in Yunnan on the China-Vietnam border along the Red River. There she meets two men and her life changes again...
