The story takes place in 1949, during the Chinese Communist Revolution. In a village in Kashgar County of southern Xinjiang, the big landowner Osman forces marriage on peasant Sadiq's daughter, Anarxan. After a failed escape and near-death domestic violence, Qurban sympathizes with Anarxan's experience and elopes with her. Osman colludes with Emin to carry out counter-revolutionary activities hidden under the disguise of religion. To win public support, he pretends to break up his marriage with Anarxan. After a long duration of poor living conditions in the deserts, the pregnant Anarxan and Qurban finally return to their hometown after southern Xinjiang's liberation in 1950.
