Governor Chin forces the commoner Hon So Ying to marry his sickly eldest son in a desperate attempt to counteract bad luck. While performing the marriage bows, the bride transforms into a skeleton and scares the groom to death. Chief inspector Chan Chi Kong takes charge of the case and chances on Hon, the self-confessed female ghost. Finding the events dubious, Chan launches an investigation in the Hon residence whereby he learns that Chin's second son Tak Biu desires Hon's cousin Yau Lai Kuen as his bride and succeeds to persuade the father to give his consent. Tak Biu, however, meets the same fate as his brother. A furious Chin finds a scapegoat in Chan and locks up his mother.
