After October (2021)

"Do you ever feel like you're the only one left in the world?"

After October was a short film showing how one young man wanted less time to live and another wanted more.

A young man returns home to die, having lost everyone he cared about and believing he has nothing left to live for. He picks a scenic spot with a lake and mountain views. Feeling utterly alone he is surprised by the arrival of an old friend. The friend tells him he has one day to live and desperately wishes for more. The friend is concerned about what awaits him after death and whether he will become a ghost.

This short film had potential, but lacked details that would have enhanced the story. What devastating thing had happened to the young man? What caused the breakup two years ago? What mysterious illness keeps to a schedule and lets a person behave perfectly normally within hours of death?

Too often people determined to end their lives suffer from more than just a passing thought. While this short film tried to give a simple answer, life isn’t always that easy. The short was filmed in a beautiful location with two beautiful actors, it just lacked a deeper insight that might have made it more poignant.

“Time will bring everything into our lives. Time will take everything from our lives, as well.”

I’m not sure dumping another tragedy and loss into the lap of the young man would do much healing for him. I’m actually surprised he didn’t walk right into the lake afterwards as depressed as he was. The ending was too trite and simplistic for me.
