Chemistry On Top, Romance That Actually Romances

I binge-watched this drama for a week without having any high expectations. And honestly, I can say this is one of the best C-dramas I’ve ever watched.

I really don’t understand why people keep criticizing Esther Yu just because of her voice. For me, her voice is perfectly fine. It adapts to the mood and emotions of each scene. For example, during the Thailand arc, Mumu was still immature, so it made sense for her voice to sound more high-pitched. As the character grows, the voice gradually becomes more fitting.

But if you watch this drama with intense hatred toward Esther Yu, then everything she does will naturally annoy you. In that case, you simply shouldn’t watch this drama at all. There’s just too much time wasted hating someone over something as trivial as their voice.

And honestly, if you can watch Zhao Lusi’s dramas, even though her voice can be quite grating at times, then you should be able to watch any drama starring Esther Yu. Sorry I mentioned Zhao Lusi because you know....

Moving on to the story itself, the only thing I disliked was the moment Jiang Zhao decided to send Mumu back to Canada because her mother was sick. He made a decision for Mumu as if he were her. I understand that he was hurt and didn’t want to burden her, but he had no right to make that choice on her behalf.

Imagine finding out everything about the person you love through other people, while everyone else knows before you do. That hurts. Please stop lying under the excuse of “protecting someone.” It never works. The moment you choose to break up to protect someone, you don’t realize that you’re actually destroying their life—especially when most of their world already revolves around loving you.

That’s the only part I didn’t like, and thankfully, the conflict wasn’t dragged out for too long. Overall, I loved almost everything about this drama. The chemistry was top-tier, and the romance truly felt romantic.

The only recurring issue with Esther Yu’s dramas is the excessive episode cuts. Ski Into Love had the same problem, so did My Journey to You and A Romance of the Little Forest. Why do all her dramas have to suffer from heavy editing? It’s such a waste, especially when all her dramas are genuinely good.

Sun and moon shining together

Speed and Love is one of the C-dramas I always find myself rewatching. I know it's one of those dramas people either love or hate, but for me, it was an easy 10/10.

The biggest reason? The chemistry between Zhao Zhao and Mu Mu. It was absolutely insane. Every scene together felt effortless, whether they were teasing each other, arguing, missing each other, or simply exchanging a look. I just couldn't get enough of them.

He Yu was perfect as Zhao Zhao. He has that bad-boy look, but then he smiles and suddenly he's the most charming person on screen. What made me love him even more was how patient and gentle he was with Mu Mu. He believed in her, respected her, and gave her the space to grow.

And Mu Mu... yes, she was younger, but she was never weak. She was smart, brave, and capable from the very beginning. I especially loved the Nanjing arc because it showed how much she had grown and how devoted she was to Zhao Zhao. I've rewatched those episodes more times than I can count.

I know Esther Yu's voice isn't for everyone, but it never bothered me. If anything, I thought she was perfect as Mu Mu and brought so much charm and energy to the role.

As someone who's a fan of the Fast & Furious movies, I thought the racing scenes were so fresh and exhilarating. They weren't just there for show, they actually made me excited for every race. One of my favorite moments was when Mu Mu surprised Jin Zhao with her drifting. I remember smiling the entire time because it was such a badass moment.

By the time Zhao Zhao and Mu Mu finally found their way back to each other, it felt incredibly satisfying because they had both grown so much. Their reunion felt earned, making the ending even more rewarding.

I've watched Speed and Love three times already, and somehow I still end up replaying the Nanjing arc and all my favorite scenes. That's how I know it's one of my all-time favorites. No matter how many new dramas I watch, I'll always find myself coming back to Zhao Zhao, Mu Mu, and their unforgettable chemistry.

Love it!

I have a huge issue with Chinese dramas: the fact that they use Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) - this always throws me off and I hate that I can't watch something that seems interesting and could've been good. This drama, however, caught my eye because it revolved around driving cars, which I love, so I gave it a go, and in doing so, it was a relief to see that most of the time they either didn't use ADR, or you couldn't tell they did.
The cinematography is mesmerising, and so are the views.
Everyone in this drama is a great actor, especially Esther Yu, who had to cry a lot the entire drama, and He Yu, who was able to convey a lot of emotions and could only smile towards the end - they really make you believe they're those characters, well done to them!
San Lai was also an amazing character, and I absolutely loved Jin Zhao and Lin Sui's bromance - I just wish Jin Zhao hadn't been so mean to him, lol.
I really loved the way the writers wrote He Zhang as well!
As for what I didn't like, I'll have to say the fact that we could hear their thoughts - it didn't happen too many times, but only a few of them made sense and weren't cringe-worthy; I'll definitely skip the times when the thoughts are cringey when I rewatch this drama.

[Warning: Spoilers ahead!]
I also didn't like the way Jin Zhao disappeared from Jiang Mu's life out of nowhere - as someone who's done something similar to what he did, I have the moral high ground to say it's wrong because nothing gives you the right to decide for someone else, especially when Jiang Mu was so worried and sad the entire time she didn't know what was happening with him, and also the fact that he used her ideas, kept their dog and didn't tell her... If you find this sweet, you're just wrong. He should've told her, full stop. Communication and honesty above everything, always. And I don't want to hear "But he didn't want her to have a hard life, blablabla" - what he and all the people who think like this fail to realise is that when you like someone, your life will be much worse if you're away from them, and that's exactly what makes it difficult, not being with them even if it comes with a lot of challenges.
[End of spoilers]

I know some people will find the story a cliché, but I could relate a lot to it, there were many things they went through and said that were the exact same as what I've been through, thought and said, so this drama will always be special to me and I plan on watching it from time to time - it truly became one of my favourites.
The OST is awesome as well!
Well done to everyone involved and thank you all SO much for this drama!

stepcest question mark

i tried so hard to care about this stepcest ragebait & make sense of the general plot idea but i guess #DeadDoveDoNotEat always prevails. i found the cast to be fine and i love the work qiming fei puts into his support roles ,, he's mastered the craft and his ability brought a lot of light into the episodes that i watched.

⟢ maybe i just pull out scripts that do injustice to esther yu as an actress, but i'm severely underwhelmed by her typecast tendencies. the music is cringy & the production isn't anything above average, but i really liked the filming locations and insight into the streets of thailand. . .all thai actors did great!

truly whatever ._.

wattpad as a drama but not exactly done well..

Unfortunately once again Esther Yu's character is the same cutesy childish like vibes...honestly every drama i hope she takes on something new but....I feel like in historical dramas its still okay like Love Game was really good but somehow in modern dramas its hard to watch...

Ok that aside I thought of watching for Heyu and also cause i saw many spoilers for their chemistry online. The plot is really average but the drama is made for a visual feast. The biker/racer guy with a cute girl kind of vibes. But yea even with the visuals I soon got bored of the characters.

They get together in ep 15 but it feels like the director just decided to put all the sweet moments in 2eps, like cliche scenes after cliche scenes. I guess if you are a fan of the actors it is cute to watch!

I dont have much comments on any of the side characters no one was interesting...

Her fits are nice but seemed very unrealistic. Her motive to give up a life in canada and suddenly stay with her bro was also a bit...? cause at that time its not like she was dying in love with him...

anyway not my style so dropping...

A Drama Worth Watching — But Only After It’s Complete

I can’t understand how quickly each episode flies by. I made the mistake of starting this drama before it was fully completed, and honestly, it’s been really hard to wait for every new episode. After Moonlight, Esther Yu truly proves her versatility she leaves behind her childish mannerisms and delivers a performance that fits her role beautifully. The male lead is impossibly cute, and all the supporting characters have done a great job as well. Overall, it’s a fantastic drama. One piece of advice: don’t start watching it before December 29th, because waiting for each episode is incredibly difficult.

Unbelievably good. I honestly don’t know how or when I will get over this drama. I absolutely loved He Yu and really hope Esther continues to take on roles like this in the future. Ending could have been better - just 1 more episode but a MUST WATCH

A little overhyped in my opinion.

A little overhyped in my opinion. I like their love story though. I think that was sweet despite the fact that he was an adoptive brother...(kinda weird as he was still with her dad in Thailand).
Some parts of the drama had its charms but there was just something about it and it started getting boring and draggy.
Their overall chemistry was good on screen.
Overall, it was good but still think its overhyped.

Zhao Zhao & Mu Mu Lasts Forever

On the surface, this is very much a Wattpad-core drama. And as someone whose teen years were spent in Wattpad stories, I have zero complaints.

This story healed me in so many ways. I didn’t mind the time skips or separations because even in the gaps, all I could feel was their love for each other — her patience and perseverance, and his care and tenderness. At the root of every decision they made, they always had each other at the centre.

It had its flaws, the biggest being the cuts. I don’t know why certain scenes were cut, and I honestly wish each episode was at least an hour long. That’s the only thing that really put me off.

But its perks outweigh everything for me. The story was about Jin Zhao and Mu Mu, but also about cars, racing, friendship, and family. They dealt with what they were given incredibly well. The characters felt alive and gave life to the story — gave it its soul. Usually, dramas that give me butterflies do it in soft pink hues, but this one hit differently. It gave me butterflies that made me yearn and tear up because of how tender Jin Zhao’s love for Mu Mu was. And she, come hell or high heaven, never faltered in her affection for him.

Also, big props to San Lai for being the friend he was to both of them. He deserves his own person, honestly.

I’ll remember this story forever, and I really wish it was longer.

I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece, but it left its mark on me the way a masterpiece does.

The Noble Idiot trope needs to die!

If I'm honest, this show is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde for me. I think this is due to a mix of script and production issues. Let's break this down.

First of all, the Thailand location, fight club and street racing are largely set dressing. The show does include some nefarious plots that might not go down well with censors. Being set in Bangkok allows them to play the NIMBY game. The real A-plot is the OTP's romance.

Before we start, I have a confession. I'm not a big fan of Esther Yu. As far as I'm concerned, this show is tailor-made for her. She did good. Having said that, some of her antics can be annoying. The good outweighs the bad.

The ML is handsome with a strong bad boy vibe. He is a street fighter/boy racer hybrid. You won't see many young idols being able to pull this off convincingly. Kudos to him.

The FL calls the ML her brother, but they are not blood related. They did grow up in the same household. Their dynamics changed fairly quickly after they reconnect.

They got separated when the FL's parents divorced and the boy went to Thailand with the dad. The man remarried and had another daughter. His current wife is a kind hearted woman and the little girl is cute. Their story is perfunctory though.

In a similar vein, the fight club stuff and some of the street racing are there to add colour and grit to the ML's backstory. The races are fast and furious. However, most of them are computer generated and repetitive. It does the job. The plot moves along and the ML gets in harm's way constantly.

BTW, I'm sure most of the show is shot in China. Some B-rolls and key scenes were shot on location.

As if on cue, the dreaded mid show break-up with bonus Noble Idiocy hit us, hard. I know he loves her deeply and he always has her wellbeing at the forefront of his mind, but to break up at that juncture when she was so vulnerable is just cruel. It is the textbook definition of a Noble Idiot.

He even told the FL after they reconciled that he just wants her to be happy. The FL has the perfect comeback. She told him that she can never be happy without him. Zing!

What is worse is they were separated for SIX years. I can accept 6 months. I get that he was making long term plans and recovering from his injuries, but that will be for naught if the FL falls in love with someone else. What happens if she is seriously ill and he is not by her side?

The writer tries to explain it all away by having everything falls into place magically. She also drops us into one of the sweetest and most romantic storyline in recent memory. Yes, I have watched enough dramas to know that we need angst and dramatic tension, but I think it could have been done better. All his mates chastised him. Calling him out for pushing her away and making unilateral decisions. It is angst for angst sake.

The writer knows full well how people should behave. For instance, the partner of the FL's mother promptly married her even though she told him they should break up because of her heart condition. Good on ya, Chris. The wife of the FL's alcoholic father is a saint. She stood by him through thick and thin. So why can't the FL be trusted? To just blame the ML's stubbornness is fairly self serving. I am annoyed that the writer displays such double standards.

The only reason I can think of is so that they can stretch the show to 29 eps. Am I too cynical?

I know this review sounds negative. In fact, I actually quite enjoyed this series. My Romance Tragic half loved it. The Rational Critic side wants a quiet word with the writer in a dark alley. ;) I am frustrated that a very good show got dragged down by some questionable narratives.

I know it will sound crazy, but I would seriously suggest you watch the first few eps to get your bearings and work out who's who. Then skip to EP.22 and watch to the end. You won't miss much.

These last few eps are really the heart and soul of this drama. All the swoon worthy moments. Skinship that feels natural. Everything you need in a romance drama are lovingly curated in a neat package. The rest are fillers.

To say I'm conflicted is an understatement. When it is good, it is AMAZING. Some production issues and rehashing of old tropes did drag the show down a bit. It could have been the best drama of 2025. It was THAT close. Peace.

Best Chinese drama of 2025 (after Love's Ambition and The Coroner's Diary)

OMG I literally finished this drama within three days (29 Dec 25 – 31 Dec 25), and I am completely in love. This drama got me hooked from the very first episode. It feels fresh and different, with a well-written script that clearly shows how much effort the team put into it—seriously, well done.

As someone who prefers romantic dramas, this one checked all the boxes for me, especially with such amazing leads. Esther Yu and He Yu were honestly the perfect fit for their roles, ngl. Their chemistry feels natural, and I love how each interaction between them becomes more intense without unnecessary dragging. Every scene feels meaningful and keeps you wanting more.

What really stood out to me is how the drama beautifully shows the growth of both leads, from their youth to becoming mature adults. Their emotional development feels realistic and earned, which made their journey even more touching to watch. Overall, this drama isn’t just romantic—it’s heartfelt, engaging, and unforgettable. Definitely one of my favorites
Ending my 2025 with this drama honestly made my heart so happy.
