A Tender Story of Love Blooming Amid War and Secrets

I didn’t start this drama because of the leads. Both actors are good, but I hadn’t really watched a highly rated drama from either of them that made me fully trust their projects. What actually pulled me in was the director and screenwriter. They’ve delivered strong work individually before, so this easily made it onto my anticipated list.

And honestly, that trust paid off. Zeng Qing Jie once again proves why he stands out. His direction is easily one of the strongest aspects of this drama. The way he uses natural lighting, frames shots, and turns simple settings into visually stunning scenes is just impressive. Every frame feels intentional. There were moments where I had to rewind scenes because I got distracted just admiring how beautiful everything looked. It genuinely feels like watching a moving painting at times.

From the very beginning, the cinematography grabs your attention. The visuals are stunning, and the drama avoids a lot of the usual frustrating tropes. Both leads are capable, smart, and not pushovers. They don’t fall into the typical “self-sacrificing for no reason” trap, which was honestly refreshing. The female lead especially stands out as someone strong both physically and mentally, and I liked that she holds her ground.

The story blends romance with political conflict and personal struggles. It starts off with a strong foundation, slowly introducing an overarching mystery while building relationships naturally. The dynamic between the leads develops in a very organic way. What begins as something simple grows into mutual trust, protection, and eventually something deeper. Their chemistry carries a strong sense of yearning and tension, especially in the later parts.

The supporting cast deserves a lot of credit too. Characters actually feel relevant and well-placed within the story. Some of them, like Deng Kai’s character, are incredibly compelling. His portrayal of a morally complex antagonist adds depth, and you even find yourself understanding him at times despite his actions. Even smaller roles, including the younger characters, leave an impact.

The romance is definitely one of the highlights. It’s not rushed or overly dramatic. It builds slowly through shared experiences, quiet moments, and emotional growth. Their relationship feels equal and grounded, which made it satisfying to watch. There are no unnecessary love triangle complications either, which I appreciated.

That said, the drama isn’t without flaws. The first half is genuinely strong and almost perfect in terms of setup, pacing, and character building. The second half is still good, but it doesn’t fully live up to the potential set earlier. It becomes more politically heavy, and while the politics are interesting, they aren’t always handled with the same depth or clarity. At times, it feels like the script doesn’t do full justice to the characters.

There are so many well-written characters, but instead of showing their depth through interactions, the story sometimes relies too much on explanation. Some relationships and histories could have been explored better through actual scenes rather than dialogue. It feels like missed opportunities, especially when the cast has such strong chemistry.

Even with that, the drama remains engaging. The acting is solid across the board, the fight scenes are enjoyable, and the overall production quality is high. The soundtrack also deserves a mention because it enhances the emotional tone really well.

In the end, this is a drama that you enjoy both visually and emotionally. It has strong characters, beautiful cinematography, and a compelling romance. While the second half doesn’t fully match the brilliance of the first, it’s still a satisfying watch overall.

If you like slow-burn historical dramas with strong leads, good chemistry, and aesthetic storytelling, this is definitely worth trying.

Refresing drama especiall leads life in "Lin'an town."

DRAMA OF THE YEAR!

This drama is exactly what a most-anticipated drama should look like- it’s serving way too hard. I’m literally screaming and getting goosebumps from the beginning, the actions were so good too! 👏🏻It 300% worth the hype. I'm enjoying. Every. Single. Episode.
For me, this is a refresing drama. No palaces' beautiful manson etc. its truly different.
The story, the setting it feels very promising. The cinematography really stands out.

FL- Xiwei is just an amazing & impressive actress who got the charm that pulls you in. Her visual is so breathtaking. Those big eyes of her is truly captivater' her smile with cutie dimples! Oh daaamn! She's aphrodite's prettiest handcraft. She slay this role effortlessly, cute and fierce. Her facial expression is on point and the way she embodied fan Changyu is a top tier. She is very endearing, a badass without being too perfect and mean. This actress really struck the perfect balance. For me, this is how you do F-centric drama strong and independent while being so kind.
ML- Linghe of course is a bonus! So handsome & stunning! Both of them straight out from the book.
Both of them are amazing to portrait their character.

Ning and falcon is so cute. ♥️
The squad and other cast is also perfect and funny! 🤭

The chemistry between her and Linghe is very electrying, so natural and effortless. I keep on giggling, kicking and screaming on their eye contact. There's alot of iconic scene of the leads and so far I'm loving it. Their love doesn't need to expressed in words, the way they stare each other have said it thousand times.

Haters gonna hate. I'm hooked and lovin' it!

I’m captivated.

Stunningly beautiful drama. So many reviewer before me did such an amazing job reviewing this drama (See HONEY) that I feel like I’m just wasting my time typing here. So here’s how I feel in short -

(Handsome, Strategic, Marquis ML) + (Beautiful, strong, caring pig butcher FL) + (AMAZING cinematography, pacing, story, costume, OST, side characters, with a dash of humor sprinkled in) = MUST WATCH

I only have myself to blame for starting this drama so soon. Now I’m impatiently waiting for the next episodes while losing sleep because I’m rewatching previous episodes.

Not My Taste, But Still Worth Noting

This drama is likely best suited for viewers who enjoy wholesome relationships. That’s not really my preference. I tend to gravitate toward more complex dynamics—dysfunctional couples who struggle with their flaws but ultimately carve out a hard-earned, imperfect happiness together. That said, I did enjoy a few subplots.

The Butcher Gang was particularly engaging. I was also drawn to the portrayal of the Sui brothers. Unfortunately, they weren't enough. Overall, this wasn’t really my kind of drama, and I wish I had watched it in clips instead of all the way through, as I regret the time I spent on it.

Came for ML, ended up loving both!

The drama has not has a dull moment, The story is very fast paced. FL has a unique character setup, I love that she is a girl boss, badass and no a damsel in distress. As usually a very strong woman ends up being weak in front of the ML. She has a brain and knows how to think. The ML is charismatic and charming and the FL is total badass and a charmer.

Don’t miss out on this one.

Talk about an empty vessel making too much noise

Really could not stand this one. This is a perfect example of an empty vessel making too much noise. The ML is this one was downgraded to nothing just to elevate the FL . Only for namesake was he a powerful duke while a mere butcher woman became this super woman 😂🤣🤣. This was the most ridiculous plot I have seen so far . The ML was just a tool for romancing the FL. And we are supposed to enjoy this farce. No thank you

Stunning to Look At, Harder to Believe

Initially, this show felt like a solid 9/10 for me, gorgeous cinematography, an array of very attractive leads, and that signature artistic style I’ve come to expect from this director. Visually, it absolutely delivers. But by the time the final episodes rolled around, my rating had slipped to an 8… honestly, closer to a 7.

The problem is that the storytelling just doesn’t hold up under all that beauty. I knew the director’s aesthetic and thematic style going in, and those elements didn’t disappoint. But the narrative itself felt thin, especially in the second half. The female lead, who starts off as a strong, capable, independent woman, slowly drifts into Mary Sue territory and not because she’s powerful, but because the writing stops challenging her in meaningful ways.

And don’t even get me started on the villains’ “deaths.” Plot armour so thick it might as well be bulletproof steel. You cannot convince me that being shot in the chest and falling off a city wall somehow results in… survival? I get that they may be trying to stay faithful to the source material, but at least make it believable.

Overall, it is stunning to look at and has moments of brilliance, but the uneven writing and unbelievable character outcomes hold it back from being truly great.

Below Average

I honestly don’t understand the hype around The Pursuit of Jade.

For me, the story felt extremely average and very similar to countless other xianxia dramas. The familiar tropes, character dynamics, conflicts, and fantasy elements are all there, but very little felt fresh or memorable. I kept waiting for something that would make the drama stand out, and it never really happened.

The production may be polished and the cast does a decent job, but good visuals alone are not enough when the story itself feels so predictable. There were moments I enjoyed, but overall I never became emotionally invested in the characters or their journey.

If you are a huge fan of the xianxia genre, you may enjoy it much more than I did. But after seeing so much praise, I expected something special. Instead, it felt like another standard xianxia with a different cast and packaging.

Not terrible, just very average, and definitely not worth the hype for me.

Started to lose interest

How can you start out liking a drama then later as the drama keeps going the storyline loses itself and becomes a chore?

Kept seeing "best drama of the year" and this one didn't make that list for me. I took some points off in my rating.

The ml and fl storyline started to get bland to me and dragged. I started looking forward to watching side characters scenes instead. Sometimes the side characters barely get episodes and when they do all my attention is there.

Stayed watching for Qi Min and his brother I know their scenes are crazy, but their acting was good.

The main storyline got too boring when ML didn't tell
FL his real name. & when FL kept pushing ML away.
When they finally got together I didn't care and skipped them completely.

I do believe without introducing Qi Min storyline in the drama I probably would've dropped it awhile ago if he wasn't in here, but thanks to Deng Kai acting saving my attention span I stayed.

Wish they showed more of Qian Qian character and how did she get there.

Regardless, I hope they get Deng and Snow together for their own drama being mains in the future.

A subjective review on this popular drama...

After watching 8 episodes, I’ve done my research because usually when watching costume dramas, I should have grasped the happenings and all —the gist of the drama plot but, none. Nada. I’m a bit confused but realized it’s a 40-episode drama that’s why it’s still like on the introductory stages, confusion is still on and will probably clear it on the 20-25th episode and despite all that, I’m still seated 🙂‍↕️

The story is about the FL who lost her parents from presumably bandits but there's a behind story about that as well and accidentally found our ML buried in snow, taking pity like it's her mom's sign, saved him not knowing he was the Marquis of Wu'an that everyone knew about. As I've read the book because I was confused in the drama, it gave me a little bit of understanding and watched it comfortably. The flow of the drama was alright, not too slow for a 40-episode, it still keeps your interest in the longer you're watching it. I was just a bit disappointed towards the end, the FL, considering that she is a General only appeared when saving her friend? Like what was that? She is considered one of the strongest, who fought her way to the top but didn't show any action towards the end? When the coup happened, where was the FL? Additionally, there are little details that they didn't elaborate. Why did they not include the reason why the Uncle of the ML took the blame of the sins that the late emperor did?

I watched dramas for the actors, yes. But I also watch with reason. I always, always try to understand the plot not just admiring the faces of the actors (but it really is a plus tho). The casts and their acting? Amazing. I love how they portrayed their character especially the child actors they're so great! The characters have their own canvases with different kinds of abstract paintings on them, deep and meaningful.

There’s still like things to note (that my sensitive ahh noticed) —the way the sound effects are there and sometimes it's not clearly needed in the scene. I don’t know what to call those but the cuts on certain scenes and moving on to the next? The element of confusion, I understand but the way the scenes are combined aren’t blended (idk if someone will understand me, ik it’s normal to cut scenes one after another ahhh i hope someone understands me on this) and lastly, I don’t have anything or something with the grand princess character but I was like literally confused on why is she here now? I know she was supposed to be the wife of the Marquis but why was the back story of her and the Grandmaster showing at the early episodes? 😭 Lastly, the falcon... the messenger bird needs the exposure with the FL's sister, but they didn't show it :(( There's so much more to note but that's okay, dramas are all like that, it's up to us on how we’ll digest and interpret dramas and this is how I perceived it. That’s all ~

The official soundtracks are okay, but I think expecting that this drama will top the viewer ratings, they should have chosen better fitting in the narrative, the intro, and I think it got better blending in the latter episodes especially that guasha scene and when the ML is like making his grand entrance 😂

Will probably watch some tt edits but not rewatch since there’s so many minor details to focus on 🥹

PS. Ngl I think the actors saved this drama 🥲🥲🥲

This story was nearly holistic but…

I feel a bit unsatisfied because the show was nearly perfect, from the storyline to the acting. Each individual has a different ending, and most were appropriate. However, the ending for the supporting character 'Du Tiǎn Tiǎn' lacked uniqueness. Since she is a time-traveler, her conclusion felt too gloomy and failed to showcase her special abilities. I want to suggest a new scene for her.... *_*
