Best Historian Cdrama in all my 8 years of watching

I cannot express the happiness and the heartbreak this show has caused me. I've never loved a female and male lead as much as I've loved them. Somehow, I was able to love even the villains of the show and still cry at the losses. Not only are the actors sooo beautiful and attractive, to the point where my motivation to keep watching was to see the female lead in pigtails again, but it's also so amazing seeing such a strong female and male lead fight alongside each other, and how they both were so protective of each other. The side characters did not disappoint, and there was such a sense of unity that made me sob sometimes. I watched the 40 episodes in a week, and it would have been shorter if not for my finals, but this drama displayed so many traits that you can tick. The character development, even when both characters were perfect enough, really was the cherry on the cake, and it was so fulfilling seeing other romances play out; the plot twists, really, were insane sometimes. I NEVER give reviews, but honestly, this takes the cake in making me cry, laugh, and all the above. Really, I think you should watch even though you might not watch dynasty dramas; without spoiling, this is really worth it.

Already the best of 2026

I know, I know... we're still in early 2026 but nothing (and I mean NOTHING) can compare to this beauty of a drama.

I was among the skeptical at first. I'm not a big fan of Zhang Ling He's acting skills so I held off on this drama but the ype grew so big it took over my TikTok fyp and I had to take a look for myself.
I'm glad I did.

I binged watched the first 28 episodes within the span of three days, sat on the edge of my seat and found myself finding reason to relate to almost every character. I cried my eyes out for characters that were inherently bad, rooted for characters who searched for redemption, sat on the edge of my seat for the main characters and fell head over heels in love with one of the villains.

The cast for this drama is so damn good and Zhang Ling He proved me so wrong in thinking he couldn't act all that well. The way he portrays his character in this show is magnificent and I take back every bad word I have ever said about him. It was my first drama starring Tian Xi Wei and I can't wait to see more of her in cdrama. The same goes for Deng Kai and Lin Mu Ran and I could keep that list going.
This show deserves the hype because it's everything I would wish for in a drama and more. It gave me angst, drama, a romance to die for, a beautiful portrayal of a toxic romance, badass female characters, child actors who can actually act well and so much more.

Would I recommend? Hell yes! The cast is casting. The costumes are costuming. The OST is freaking amazing. It got me goosebumps whenever it started playing.
So if you're looking for a show that will pull you in from start to finish, you should definitely watch this. If not? Then watch it anyway. It's worth it. Trust me.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but The Pursuit of Jade did almost nothing for me.

I saw all the excitement surrounding it and assumed there must be something especially compelling here. After watching it, I am still wondering what everyone else saw.

The drama moves through territory that xianxia has already explored many times before. Instead of pulling me into its world, it constantly reminded me of earlier shows from the same genre. Very few scenes made me curious about what would happen next, and I never reached that point where I felt genuinely attached to the story.

Even the romantic and emotional moments failed to leave much of an impression on me. They were there, but I was watching them rather than feeling them.

Nothing about the drama is offensively bad. It is simply uninspiring. That was actually more disappointing to me, because with this level of attention I expected a series with a stronger personality and much more emotional pull.

By the end, my reaction was basically: “That’s it?”

For viewers who can never get enough of xianxia, this might still be an enjoyable watch. Personally, I would struggle to name anything about it that I will remember a few months from now.

The characters, relationship dynamics and cinematography made up for a poorly executed plot.

This show proves that beautiful leads, engaging relationship dynamics and sweeping cinematography can save a decent but poorly executed plot. It really highlights how productions sacrifice certain aspects of a drama and elevate others to suit their target audience - but doesn’t the idol drama fan also value a tight and well executed plot? The MDL ratings show us that maybe not so much!
Now I am well aware of my western bias, so I am willing to admit that my confusion about the history and politics of this realm may not have been as much of an issue for Chinese viewers. Despite all of that, I still thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful spectacle of the leads and humble side characters. I was willing to overlook the ridiculous beauty of the main leads, the unrealistic depictions of battle, the lack of sun damage on faces that spend most of their time outside, the perfectly manicured hands of seasoned soldiers and butchers and much more - because it was all so beautiful and emotionally compelling by design. I cried, I laughed, I swooned - all while not understanding (and ultimately not really caring about) many aspects of the main plot.
This was an enjoyable watch - I was swept up in the hype and totally satisfied by the escapism it provided. Is it a rewatch? Not in its entirety, but I will probably watch specific scenes and edits. Will I seek out other shows starring the leads? Maybe not their back catalogue but definitely their future projects. Will I recommend it to others? Maybe just to asian drama fans and carefully chosen others. Is it one of my favourite dramas of all time? Not really, but maybe top 20!

Did not Disappoint!! A Definite Master Piece!!

Thank God!!! The Drama is too Good and It is beyond the Expectations. I loved Every single Scene and There are no Unnecessary gaps of relationship between Main Leads and Every Single Character of the Drama is Good , May it be Good or Bad . Every Single Actor is good , Many actors had a short role but I liked them too . The Ending Extra scene is very cute and The Main CP they have my Heart and Their Pair is Awesome and Chemi is also too good . If there is Chance would like to see them in another drama , It is also good if it modern drama.

A Compelling Story, Lost in Its Own Choices

I started watching this drama because of the second leads.

This series promises a rich narrative, but it quickly becomes unbalanced. The male lead is introduced as strong and authoritative, yet fades when it matters most, while the female lead takes over major confrontations in a way that feels unearned.

Her victories over highly trained soldiers lack credibility. These are disciplined, powerful figures, yet they fall too easily. If her success relied on intelligence or strategy, it would feel justified—but relying on physical strength alone weakens the story’s logic.

Her characterization adds to the issue. She acts recklessly, ignores rules, and faces no real consequences, removing tension from the narrative. At the same time, her identity feels contradictory—a butcher’s daughter living in a harsh, violent environment, yet portrayed as overly gentle without meaningful exploration of that contrast.

It is also unrealistic how quickly she rises to a high military rank and gains direct access to the emperor without proper development.

The male lead suffers from inconsistency as well. As a high-ranking officer, he should act with discipline, yet he behaves impulsively—discovering the female lead in her village in danger, pursuing her with part of his army, treating her, and letting her escape. His reaction to the emperor’s order is rude and careless, and even after returning to the capital without a summons, his actions remain erratic. His harsh treatment of the uncle who raised him is especially difficult to justify.

Despite this, the strongest moments in the series are during their time in the village, where the story feels more natural and believable.

Ironically, the real strength lies in the secondary characters—especially the second male lead. His cold and harsh personality feels authentic. His past is not merely a dramatic backstory—it is a living explanation for who he is. With a father lost to violence, a mother who burned and sacrificed herself to protect him, and a childhood spent among enemies, his emotional detachment feels real and earned.

In the end, I must say it was still enjoyable to watch this drama, especially with so many charismatic and visually appealing actors.

This drama is a disappointment and a deception of the viewer.

It started off brilliantly and I was sure that after many years of drought, something good had finally appeared. The humor, great production, blocking, costumes—the plot a bit banal and cliché-ridden, but done nicely.

Unfortunately, around episode 8 everything started to fall apart. The light drama began turning into boredom, and eventually into some kind of political tragedy, and the so-called character development of the heroine turned her into yet another generic strong female lead—and, as usual, undeservedly so. The way she killed the person she killed was so absurd that it fits 100% into the fantasies of naive teenagers and 0% into logic and narrative consistency.

Never mind that. Each episode became more and more boring, irritating, slow, and based solely on talking and suffering. So what happened was a crime against the viewer—the viewer was deceived with the promise of a light comedic romance and got a tragedy instead. And to anyone who says, “you should have read the description,” I say, “get stuffed.” Descriptions lie—I judge based on what I see, not what someone wrote, and those are always misleading, because they cram everything in.

Was this drama entertaining? The first few episodes—yes. Was it, in the end, a waste of time? For someone who doesn’t like boring politics, stupid heroines and heroes, and boredom—yes. My not tragically low rating comes from the really great production quality and those first few episodes that actually made sense.

Tian xiwei you must have watched her in many dramas her cute side , strong but this will let you forget her other drama when I saw her lift zhang linghe and it was real not ai not any prop to lift him just her the efforts she put in fighting skills the prop pig that showed in drama was also heavy and linghe was also amazed that a lady lifted him this thin he said that it's the first time someone lifted him and it's a girl,

A Cornered Wolf Fights for Survival

19yo Fan Changyu had just lost both her parents last month, and now she was left to care for her sickly younger sister Fan Changning by taking up her father’s job - pig butcher. She is known throughout the Xigu Street where she lived as the girl with extraordinary strength, having to knock out a full grown pig with one slap. On her way back from work, she stumbled upon Yan Zheng in the snow. Seeing him unconscious and heavily injured, Fan Changyu was unable to turn her back and went to carry him home, despite knowing she had no means to support another mouth to feed. In the same courtyard as the Fan humble house there is another house of the Zhou couple, almost like an adoptive parents to Fan sisters. As Yan Zheng was recuperating, numerous incidents occured that led to Fan Changyu proposing to Yan Zheng to be her married-in husband. Seeing this as an opportunity to lay low and further investigate the Jizhou massacre 17years prior that involved the death of the crown prince and his father, Yan Zheng readily agreed. Little that he knew, his fate and Fan Changyu’s ran deeper than even the murky waters of revenge he was in.

I am happy to say that this is definitely a great adaptation work, not surprising that the production team include the people from Blossom team that managed to turn a crappy novel into a masterpiece adaptation. Although Zhu Yu novel wasnt as bad as Blossom, the character for ML is particularly horrendous in the last quarter of the story, much like the grapist Wei Shao from Prisoner of Beauty novel (not the adaptation of course). It’s one of the turnoff when i finished reading the novel last year, and hoped so badly that the production wouldnt follow the crappy ML characterization by the original author. I had my wish come true and beaming with joy all throughout the show!

Zhang Linghe as Xie Jiuheng/Yanzheng was perfect! I’ve always rooted for him after watching his fine work in My Journey to You, he even double triple his performance level since then! Hurrah! I am more than satisfied! I feel so happy that the production purified this character compared to the novel, which left me thoroughly resenting the ML by the last chapter.

And Tian Xiwei as Fan Changyu is picture perfect! Breathtakingly beautiful but fighteningly strong in physique and character, Tian Xiwei nailed it to the core! I first saw her in Guardians of Dafeng and boy i hated her character to the bones, but when i saw her in the trailer last year, i somehow feel she would do a good job. She just had that Changyu aura. And she did!! Although she is small and slim, her depiction of physically strong woman is very much convincing, and her fight choreographs look extremely believable and amazing. I could tell she worked really hard in this part just by her performance on screen. And to see BTS clips where she literally carried Zhang Linghe on her back multiple times, ON HER OWN, without any wires to help with the weight really blew my mind. This girl truly has mystery powerpacks in that small and slim body!

The rest of the cast was amazing in performance hence why i rated 10/10. Deng Kai as Sui Yuanhuai was phenomenal and he depicted the wretched character of the novel really well.

And I couldnt help feeling sorry for the main mastermind in court Wei Yan, the person who orchestrated a grand ploy 17years ago that shaped a different courtscene as seen today on the show. As he is this cornered Wolf that was forced to fight fiercely for its survival. What the adaptation didnt include that the novel had written was the reason why Wei Yan had been very harsh towards Xie Jiuheng’s upbringing, which is to forge the sharpest blade for the kingdom. Wei Yan practically threw away his life, future and reputation as a statestman so he could raise a warrior that would protect the people. He had to be the villain so he could produce a hero. I feel so bad for this guy at the end of the novel, really. Hated him for so many chapters just to feel horribly sorry for him at the end. In this part, which is creating a great plot and storyline, i must say the original author had been remarkably brilliant. I just question the author’s moral compass due to how the ML character is molded towards the end of the story.

Fight choreograph is superbly done, fierce and strong aura filling up the screen in every battle, i cannot criticize anything at all. And the funny parts in the show worked put very well and are not cringy at all. And the songs are so nice!!! They stuck in my head for quite a while. Dangit i love them!

However, there’s actually one small thing that is bothering me, one that is prevalent not just with this drama but also most of other idol dramas with military general characters. I just wish they would do a more messy makeup for these characters to make it more believable. Something like the ML on The Rebel Princess. Now that is a pure ancient military general look closest to reality. That messy, harsh, brute look. Not the clean and slick, flawless porcelein-looking skin after battles with minor red scratches across the cheek. I get that idol dramas do tend to feminize ML characters, but coming from a wuxia freak i find this extremely cringy and ridiculous. Yan Zheng was also too flawless-looking when living in Changyu’s humble household. I was expecting something like Jang Siyul’s look from The Murky Stream, after all he wasnt supposed to bathe regularly since he’s injured and hot water is not readily available for poor household like Changyu’s. I am totally NOT against beautiful men, I love looking at them of course, but at least make them look that part when they just got out of (or still in) a hellhole. Nobody looks fine and flawless after battles, the words ‘battles’ and ‘looking flawless’ just dont go in line. Would it really hurt the rating if they look messy at certain parts of the story? I honestly doubt it. Fans would still swoon and non fans wouldnt have a thing to criticize.

I also dont get why people fall head over heels after unrealistic-looking characters and then get mad when their idols dont have as much screentime as they anticipated. It’s funny because the novel itself is a female centric piece which focusses more on the FL than ML. What’s even funnier is that many are complaining on iQiyi’s ep 38 of the lack of bed scene of the main couple. Gosh go watch some porn if you guys needed the action so badly, why demand to see it on screen of legitimate platforms? What a weird fetish. Get a life, folks.
