Fun watch, looks excellent, may have Girl-bossed a little too close to the sun?
I have watched a lot of historical romantic dramas that I dropped, skipped through or just found generally unsatisfying. So even though I don’t think this is a masterpiece, the fact that I was mostly satisfied throughout, enjoyed myself, and think I will probably rewatch it speaks to its overall quality. Despite the areas where I think the writing (and at times, acting) is lacking, I think that this is overall a worthwhile watch.I think that the single greatest strength of the drama is the warmth and beauty of the world that they have created through sets, cinematography, costuming and styling. It is aesthetically so pleasing to look at and has a richness that I think is sorely lacking in many Chinese dramas with cardboard sets and flat lighting. The leads look absolutely beautiful, and I found myself just absorbed in the splendour of the drama (even if the budget wasn’t huge, it feels like it is).
Saying that the best thing about the drama is the aesthetics doesn’t explain my high rating. I think that the main leads have good chemistry and an endearing dynamic, with genuine moments of emotion. Although there are times when the acting and character-writing is lacking, I think that they make up for it with earnestness. I also am a sucker for the general premise (commoner girl who is tough and kind, skilled warrior guy who no one thought would ever fall in love, fake marriage, etc.) which I think the show pulls off very successfully.
For me, when it comes to historical romances, if the setting feels good and the leads are enjoyable to watch with decent writing, I’m going to have a pretty good time. Hence my rating. However, I do think there are a few areas where the drama is weaker and which keeps me from crowning this as a masterpiece as some other reviewers have done:
(1) I think that as the show progresses the pacing and plotting gets more and more rushed and shallow. I felt like the female lead’s rise to being a general and defeating major bad guys in combat was not earned. Granted, I never felt like this show was trying to be a realistic and gritty historical drama, but I felt like this cheapened her arc and made me less invested in her as a character. The seeds of this issue were planted early, when she is very proficient in martial arts to a degree that I didn’t feel was warranted (yes, I know she was trained by her dad who was very skilled, but it never showed her practicing or training or really talking about those skills, which made them feel tacked on and random).
(2) Character motivations became less and less clear as the show went on, and characters felt more like they were just being moved around for plot purposes, rather than being driven by actual character development
(3) I found the gray-haired villain pretty repetitive and annoying. It was a slog to get through his plot, which was a shame because that is a lot of the drama. Because of that, It made the drama’s second half feel like it was dragging.

Masterpiece
I don’t usually rewatch dramas — but Pursuit of Jade is the exception. I’ve watched it three times, and somehow it gets better every single time.What makes this drama unforgettable isn’t just the plot, but the emotional depth behind every character. The story is layered with tension, love, betrayal, and sacrifice in a way that feels intense but never forced. Every detail matters, and you start noticing new meanings with each rewatch.
The acting is absolutely outstanding. The characters don’t just feel written — they feel real. The complexity of the relationships, especially the emotional push and pull, keeps you completely invested. Even the “villain” isn’t one-dimensional, which makes the story even more powerful and heartbreaking.
Visually, the drama is stunning. From the cinematography to the soundtrack, everything is crafted to pull you deeper into the atmosphere. It’s not just something you watch — it’s something you feel.
What really stayed with me is how the drama explores love in a raw and sometimes painful way. It’s not perfect or idealized, and that’s what makes it so memorable.
Honestly, Pursuit of Jade deserves a 10/10 without hesitation. It’s one of those rare dramas that stays with you long after it ends — and clearly, it’s worth watching more than once.

Battlefields, Butterflies, and Pure Badassery
It’s hard to find a drama that lives up to the hype these days, but Pursuit of Jade hooked me from episode one. The balance between the intense plot and the natural comedy is top-tier.This show is honestly a breath of fresh air. It’s rare to find a costume drama that perfectly balances high-stakes intrigue with comedy that actually lands. The humor feels so organic and never kills the tension of the plot. Plus, the chemistry between the leads is elite, it’s so natural, the butterflies are literally radiating through the screen.
The FL is a whole vibe. She’s independent and badass without being 'whiny,' yet she still has that hilarious feminine side. Watching her try not to look too 'rough' whenever the ML is around is pure comedy gold. And the ML? Total dream. He’s an absolute beast on the battlefield but a total simp for the FL. We love to see it.
Visually, it’s a masterpiece. The cinematography feels so grand, and the color grading is super easy on the eyes. The winter setting with all that snow really elevates the whole aesthetic. Not to mention, the fight choreography is stunning and smooth. Pure badass energy.
Honestly, Pursuit of Jade is easily the frontrunner for Best Drama of early 2026. I’m officially struggling with the daily wait for new episodes!

Thought this had a great historycal plot and war scene, but i was wrong, its all about romance
1. StoryFirst half this was really good, undoubtedly, setting it world really good, expecting us something big would really happen later in the episode with hinted plot. But how disappointed i am, it just recycling it scene focusing on cinematic romance scene, turned a good story into a goofy one because they want a female protagonist to look so amazing and forcing it too much.
Despite the story make us believe how amazing the Marquez were, instead of doing so it only glorifying everything, even some little feat the FL do, it's fine but too much in here, even making other important character epic scene skipped.
A lot of inconsistency story wise, FL weapon is dual short sword but always hinted in the story she was trained with spear art, doesn't deliver.
The FL second couple is always hinted as time traveler but noting added to story at all, weird, feels like so random.
Underwhelming fighting art but amazing cinematic wise
Rushed ending that packing the leftover story into that last episode.
2. Acting/Cast
Top tier and amazing, every character act, especially every main, awesome.
3. Music
From start to finish got a great taste of it, amazing Ost, Background sound that fitting the portrayed scene.
4. Rewatch Value
Its good rewatch value because it's so light on the plot but heavy on romance, enjoyable if you are looking into that.
5. Conclusion
A great beginning, and after all that hype an underwhelming ending.

Beautiful Show!
One of the best storylines. Pursuit of Jade has a bit of everything, comedy, sadness, and good fights. One of the best dramas with beautiful cinematography and soundtrack. The soundtrack matches up with every scene and I love that. The fighting scenes with Changyu were too good. I would have loved to see more of Wenkan’s ending, he was shown a lot in the beginning and throughout it but by the end he wasn’t shown as much just a scene at the end where he is watching his grandfather leave. Some scenes I feel like needed a bit more of explanation but other than that I think it was well paced and not a bad ending. The directors did amazing with this drama. They chose really good actors that ate up their roles and none of them missed. 10/10 I will definitely rewatch more times.Was this review helpful to you?

Like black dot on white sheet, not much but obvious flaw
Different from my full dissatisfaction rant novel purist review of LOFG, this one is from someone who hasn't read the novel, probably never. As usual, i'm not a rewatcher type.I picked this drama quite randomly amidst my long drama slump, tho it's a lie if i say it was never in my radar since our leads are interesting and i've seen some reuters lmao. Some stuff i only learned after premiere was the director, the plot, the "drama" etc etc. He's not my favorite director but his work tend to left a good impression on me. Especially the short dramas. Safe to say, i had certain expectation, especially but not limited to cinematography. Anyway, i do satisfied with that department. My eyes were pleased with its visual, both face and background.
Now, this could be minor but becomes fatal when it's the only black on white sheet. The plot.
As i said, it started strong, really strong that i still remember thinking the only thing they needed to do was to maintain the plot and pace and it would easily become my lifetime drama. The first 10 episodes was solid. Pace, plot, introduction, impression. It was that superior. Then i realized, first arc is too long. Yes, it made the massacre more impactful as the Lin'an folks grow in us but this drama isn't only about it. It's not slice of life drama. The drama failed to laid the groundwork in political/revenge department. We know there's revenge but against who? About what? They only show a glimpse of its, not a proper basis meanwhile the revenge, the enemies, was against the whole system, basically almost everyone in power had hands on the past tragedy. That big revenge plan need proper introduction imo.
However, i do admit, this one is falls into idol drama category. The romance portion naturally bigger, right? RIGHT? Yes it is, to some extent. I'm actually disappointed with the lack of Marquis Wu'an in action scene and how Fan Changyu character evolve at the later part. I feel like FCY was more active, more powerful and presence before they arrived in capital. Well, our leads screentime was lesser in later part so.
About screentime, hmm, how to put it nicely. I don't mind 2nd cp plot since they're future emperor parents and Qi Min revenge also related to the plot. I do mind how their story portrayed as love story when at some point i felt disgusted as it blatantly harassment by how uncomfortable YQQ was.
I also annoyed by how underdeveloped XZ's crew, Xie army general, due to lack of fight scene and how useless FCY's butcher crew. Totally unnecessary romance subplot. Also annoyed how they behave towards XZ, as in instead ofFCY comrades in arms they became more like annoying aunties.
Most of my plot irked is actually minor but when many minor inconvenience occurs, well it's still inconvenience and still annoying. As someone who put plot value on top, minor plot hole pretty much overshadow my whole watching experience. My rating still high because yes, i love many others aspect from acting to cinematography yet i can't just brush off the storyline issue.

You are an Ace but if FL comes you are a loser
It was such a treat to watch Fangyu before she got to know Marquis Wu'an's identity. She was a relatable character. After that her character took a nose dive. So much so that at one point I wanted that Xie Juiheng to either be single or get into relationship with some one else. Writers thought to add all the points for which generally all ML are criticised (habit of thinking they know best and deciding for others) and added into Changyu's character. For someone, who was eagerly waiting for her character growth, this was simply dissapointment. Of course, it's not chinese FL if two or more people are not in love with her. It's my bad, I forgot title of the drama is Pursuit of jade. Since Changyu is jade, everyone is supposed to pursue her.I never understood where her attitude was coming from.
One more thing: what's with FLs slapping ML whenever they want. If she is hurt by his lies, he should be equally upset with her for her hiding her father's identity. Otherwise, there is no equality.

started magnific but become a childish bad comedy
when a woman doesn't trust her man, she disempowers him, castrates him.This was beautiful for me at the beginning... but... yap the same shit, patterns over again. Slowly feeling so disappointed. I' m at 27th episode. She become so entitled, total unrealistic. Love the characters, the chemistry , the acting, it is a great crew , but...
She is powerful but if you see deeply she disempower her husband, the army, the leader. I did not like this at all. It became a bad childish comedy.
What she did for him in episode 26, like sedating him, "out of love and care" that's fake love. It is attachment, it is a subtle inversion of roles that mimics love. It is the greatest trap of disempowerment.
Ooo, she, weighing 40 kg, fought a 120 kg barbarian and won... I'm laughing so hard at this... Superwoman.
ohh and of course she discovers who he is and here we go again... she is upset, run from him... I am so fucking tired of this kind of script... as in Love between Lines (this moment ruining for me everything also)
in all honesty, i completely believed in her strong feminine character, it was a great example for me at the beginning... but she started to disappoint me a lot...
from 10 it drops slightly to 7, for me.
I will still watching but not with the same enthusiasm as at the beginning.

Ridiculously Entertaining.
It is incredulous. It's ridiculous. It's totally fictitious. It is also absolutely entertaining. Leave rationalising at the door, enter and just enjoy the actions and emotional ride.It is a period drama that draws on elements of the times. Yet the story line thrives on much of modern dramas' draw factors. Let's start with romance. It is unabashedly romantic in a way that would never happen in ancient China. No apologies. The amount of lips action would literally paint blushes on on every cheeks pink until no makeup is needed. If this is a more liberal production, the throes of the heart would not stop at the lips. If you are a romantic and somehow make it to Ep 24, there is no way you can stop there. Its kudos to the script that beyond action, the continuously smouldering romance can be ignited into a flame, and re-ignited time and again.
Did I mention modern? It is so modern that CPR is a key element of plot! Initially the plot gets more and more obtuse. It will not make sense until you hit Ep 30 and beyond. Just enjoy the human drama and action sequences until then, of which there is ample. The cinematography is good and at points stunning. Even the use of AI is so much more fluid than recent dramas. Compare the birds in this and "Legend of Shen Li"; a world apart.
The FL is a total class act. She is all big eyes, all class act as the butcher girl and so totally bad ass. I am still wondering, fr Ep 1, whether she actually handled the pig herself. And the humans subsequently. Totally the best of Tian XW. On the other hand the ML is rather nondescript except for all his enviable lip actions. I enjoyed the interactions of the Pig Squad more than the more substantial maneuvering of the nobles.
The narrative was more gripping from the village of Linan to the battlefields of the NorthWest. Once it reached the Capital, and our little butcher girl got more genteel, the drama lost some of its appeal and it became more of filling up the plot holes. Portrayal of the Capital and the court was underwhelming. The roles of our butcher girl and Marquis were equally lackluster compare to when they were out defending the Northwest. The Emperor was irritating, with the villains equally so, and rather than being actually heinous, they were just tiresome.

Moderate Story but Strong Leads - The Leads’ Chemistry Overpowers the Show
I really want to give this a 9, but when I see that Nirvana in Fire Season 2 is on my 9-point list, I have to admit that Pursuit of Jade is not there yet.To be honest, I really enjoyed all the love scenes in this drama. The way the production designed them and the way the leads delivered them worked so well together. They were so good that I kept feeling the scenes were too short.
However, not everything felt too short, especially in the first 10+ episodes. I thought the beginning was super dragging. I honestly felt like they slowed everything down during the editing process, like the whole thing was playing at 0.75x speed.
The scenes in those early episodes also had this overly orange tone, which I really hated. I do not know why the director chose that kind of filter (maybe he associated orange with homie-warmy-cozy feeling), but I am just glad it did not continue throughout the whole series. It was torture for me to watch everything through that orange lens.
The storyline and plot are ok, acceptable and 65% enjoyable. It is not deeply absorbing, but at least it is not boring. Throughout the whole series, there was not a single episode that made me desperate to watch the next one. What actually kept me thirsty were the behind-the-scene clips of the leads’ love scenes. Those are the scenes I really wanted to watch. As for the rest, I mostly just wanted enough to follow and understand the story.
So this is one of those dramas where the leads overpower the show. The show itself is not bad, but the leads are very strong. They cast the right people here, even the supporting characters have a strong presence in the drama, and timed the release well. The FL had just gained more recognition from Moonlit Reunion, and they released this not too long after that when people still remember her.
Talking about the FL, I gotta say I only started noticing her because of Moonlit Reunion. She did well there, but in Pursuit of Jade, her role suits my taste much more and now I am already a fan of hers. She completely left behind her previous role in Moonlit Reunion and really became Fan Changyu here. Her acting deserves praise.

The high score you see online is not a reflection of quality
This isn't just a bad show; it's a fascinatingly cynical product designed to extract views through aggressive marketing while ignoring every fundamental aspect of storytelling.The makers, are trying so hard to make the FL glorious, heroine that she is doing everything and all males ( lead, sides) who are according to the story got trained to become general or Marquis are actually failing to do anything.
She is defeating the badass villain, flying between arrows, saving people, killing an old villain who is almost a terror, all by herself without a proper training. People are admiring her without reasons.
Zhang Linghe, as the male lead, delivers a performance so stiff it borders on performance art. He is meant to portray a marquis in hiding, but his interpretation of "hiding" seems to be "hiding any semblance of emotion." Whether he's supposed to be near death from cold or subtly threatened, his face remains a mask of vacant indifference. He simply stands there, beautiful but utterly inert.
The rest is many Chinese clichés tropes and non interesting side stories that don't resemble anything of Chinese history it looks rather a parody of Chinese culture than a real depiction .
I love C dramas I admit classics and masterpieces but the overhype this drama received is unprecedented and it should never be classified near the real Cdramas great works

Their journeys, both individual and intertwined, reflect a pursuit not just of identity and justice, but of each other. This symbolic foundation is one of the drama’s most beautiful strengths.📖 Story & Writing
At its core, the drama blends romance with a backdrop of long-buried secrets — especially the massacre that occurred seventeen years ago. The plot is engaging, but not groundbreaking. It is neither unparalleled nor truly unique, and I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece.
However, if you watch it simply for the experience — the romance, action, and emotional beats — it becomes undeniably enjoyable. For viewers like me who tend to dig deeper, analysing layers and details, both strengths and flaws become more visible.
The screenplay is solid, though not flawless. Some unrealistic elements — exaggerated fighting skills, overly polished appearances in battlefield settings — are noticeable. Still, considering its origin as a web novel, these choices feel somewhat justified.
What concerns me more is the lack of clarity in the later episodes. Key elements — like Meng Shuanyuan’s memorial tablet, the mention of the Sixteenth Prince, and the true motives of the villains — were introduced too abruptly and insufficiently explained. For viewers who haven’t read the novel, this becomes confusing. Compressing a long novel into 40 episodes was always going to be difficult, but the rushed execution here is a clear weakness.
⏳ Pacing & Structure
The pacing is uneven.
First quarter: Slow, but beautifully immersive. The calm atmosphere, growing emotional tension, and gradual uncovering of past secrets were genuinely enjoyable.
Final quarter: Noticeably rushed. Political conflicts, twists, and character arcs felt compressed, especially in the 30s episodes.
This imbalance makes the narrative feel slightly chaotic toward the end, despite a strong start.
💞 Romance & Chemistry
Even though I’m not someone who focuses heavily on romance, I have to admit — the chemistry between the leads is captivating. It’s tender yet passionate, soft yet intense. Some moments genuinely gave me butterflies 🦋.
That said, some transitions felt abrupt — particularly the emotional escalation in Episode 17. The shift in their dynamic didn’t feel fully earned.
The second lead couple also deserves attention. Their relationship carries a different tone — more tension, more emotional friction — and adds another engaging layer to the story.
🌾 Slice of Life vs War Narrative
One of my biggest frustrations is the imbalance between the slice-of-life elements and the larger plot.
The early episodes hint at a rich, grounded world — the female lead’s life as a butcher, village routines, local traditions — but this is never fully explored. These details could have added depth and authenticity. Instead, just as we begin to settle into that world, the story abruptly shifts toward military and political themes.
A more structured approach — deepening the small-town life first, then transitioning into war and ambition — would have made the narrative far more impactful.
⚔️ Politics & Themes
The political landscape is complex and, at times, deeply unsettling.
Different factions manipulate one another — some willingly, others out of desperation. Relationships between family members, lovers, and allies become entangled in power struggles, betrayal, and survival.
This emotional weight — the suffering, sacrifices, and moral conflicts — is one of the drama’s strongest thematic elements. It shows how lives continue to flow through war, palace intrigue, and societal pressures.
🎭 Acting Performances
The leads have shown remarkable growth compared to their earlier works. Their performances here feel more mature, more controlled, and more emotionally convincing.
The main couple handles both romance and action convincingly.
The second female lead delivers a strong performance.
The second male lead, though familiar with such roles, brings a particularly refined execution this time.
There are still minor flaws, but overall, the acting is solid and commendable.
🎥 Cinematography & Visuals
This is where the drama truly shines ✨
The cinematography is stunning — poetic, artistic, and visually immersive. As someone who has watched many C-dramas, I often notice repetitive camera work. But here, there’s a refreshing sense of originality.
Some shots even feel slightly AI-enhanced, adding a modern visual texture without breaking immersion. The director clearly has an artistic vision, and it shows in every frame.
🥋 Action & Fight Choreography
The fight scenes in the first half are dynamic and well-executed — they draw you in and elevate the drama’s intensity.
Unfortunately, the later fight sequences lose that same energy and become less engaging. This decline contributes to the rushed feeling of the final episodes.
⚖️ Final Thoughts
This is not a masterpiece — but it is absolutely watchable and highly likeable.
If you approach it casually, it’s an enjoyable drama filled with romance, action, and beautiful visuals. If you analyse it deeply, you’ll notice its structural flaws, pacing issues, and missed opportunities.
Still, its emotional resonance, compelling chemistry, and breathtaking cinematography make it worth the journey 💫
