it’s overrated for me…

It’s a really good drama but not as good as people say.
honestly, from the episode 20, it’s started getting a little annoying for me so it took me time to finish it.
Idk for me the first episodes had a good vibe, a good story, but then the way that they twisted the story was lazy for me.

I loved how they showed Fan Chang Yu : as a strong woman, with responsibilities, independent, a girl who wants to protect her family.

I also liked the relationship with her sister and Xie Zheng.

The genres : fake dating, hidden identity had me !!!

Anyway it was a good drama for me but not the best.

Two Generals Bound by Fate to Fall in Love

I want to start by saying that I had been waiting for this drama for MONTHS since its announcement, and I am pleased to say it did not disappoint!

I want to begin by applauding the acting; Tian Xi Wei ate! Everyone in this cast acted beautifully, leaving you feeling every emotion and really connecting with your character. Especially when side characters died, it was truly heartbreaking; you cried with them, you laughed with them, each of these actors did their roles justice. I have been seeing Zhang Ling He get a lot of attention, which he does deserve, because his commanding presence and acting as Marquis Wu'an was amazing, but Tian Xi Wei deserves so much praise. She portrayed Fan Chang Yu brilliantly, especially in the powerful scenes, I often found myself screaming "What a queen! What an icon!". The chemistry between Zhang Ling He and Tian Xi Wei was also impeccable. Everytime they looked at each other, you could tell, they were utterly devoted to each other. They were beautiful as a couple, sweet and adorable, and full of love! This coupled with the the effort and makeup of this cast alone made the show worth it.

Additionally, The OST also definitely deserves attention. The music fit perfectly with every scene, whenever Marquis Wu'an or Fan Chang Yu were onscreen as generals, the music really made you feel their power and authority, whenever they were on screen as a couple, the music made you giggle and scream at how cute they are. I will definitely be listening to this OST on repeat.

Now for the plot, which I agree with much of the internet, was the biggest downfall of this drama. Overall, the plot was confusing in the beginning, but as you watch, you will start to understand it, so the confusion was deliberate by the screen writers, but I do think it was not a wise decision, especially seeing that understanding the connections between key figures, eg. who exactly is Prince Changxin and his history etc., is so important in understanding the motivations in characters and why what is happening is happening. Furthermore, I was also so irritated by the whole mini-breakup/not break-up??? Like I get Chang Yu being mad that Xie Zheng hid his identity from her, but like she says she likes him one day, then the next day says no? so like I was a bit irritated. She also said that if Xie Zheng looks down on my identity as a butcher, then let him be, but at the end of the day she is the one looking down on herself, saying that she doesn't deserve Xie Zheng! That was super annoying. The worst part was the whole debacle with Chang Yu pushing away Xie Zheng because of her father's identity, that whole section was so unnecessarily long, like the back-and-forth between both of them was aggravating it watch. After all those episodes and time together, Chang Yu not telling him her identity and breaking his heart was very unnecessary in my opinion, it is almost like the writers needed another 'misunderstanding' to play with the relationship.

Overall, however, this drama was worth the watch. The sweet relationship between the leads and the power of our FL made this show so worth it!!

A Love Built on Trust and Choice

First off, the chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei was amazing. The way Yan Zheng looks at Fan Changyu is filled with restraint and admiration, while she matches that energy with quiet strength and emotional control. It never feels one sided. Instead, it feels like they’re continuously choosing each other through subtle actions. Even when circumstances force them apart or make them act distant, you can still feel how deeply connected they are underneath it all. Their longing for each other was intense in the best way. You could feel their love building, especially in the quieter moments. The separation and restraint only made their romance feel more meaningful because their connection felt earned.

This drama is refreshing because both characters develop feelings for each other relatively early. Their emotions are obvious even before either of them openly admits them, which makes their relationship feel different from the usual slow burn. There’s no need for an overly dramatic confession because their care for each other is already clear through their actions. Yan Zheng falls in love with Fan Changyu because of her kindness, courage, and unwavering loyalty. Although he initially enters her life while hiding his identity and carrying the burden of revenge, his feelings gradually become genuine because Fan Changyu sees him as a person rather than someone defined by his past or status. What truly solidifies his feelings is realizing that she isn’t someone who only says she cares about him. She’s someone who will put herself in danger for him. When she returns to save him after ensuring her sister’s safety, he understands that her love comes from genuine concern rather than obligation. Fan Changyu falls in love with Yan Zheng because of his understanding and support. Despite being a pig butcher’s daughter, Yan Zheng never looks down on her background or sees her work as beneath him. Instead, he respects her strength and accepts the parts of her that others might judge. Fan Changyu takes longer to recognize her feelings because she has spent most of her life in survival mode. She’s always been the one protecting her family and carrying burdens alone. When Yan Zheng enters her life, she finally has someone who shares that responsibility instead of leaving everything on her shoulders.

The scene at the start of episode 17 perfectly shows how differently they approach love. Yan Zheng claims he’ll marry a gentle, domestic woman, while Fan Changyu says she would rather have someone warm and scholarly. Neither statement is true. They’re both describing the opposite of each other because admitting they want one another feels too vulnerable. They say hurtful things because they’re trying to hide how much they actually care. Yan Zheng has always been someone who keeps his emotions controlled. He carries the weight of his revenge, identity, and responsibilities without allowing himself to be vulnerable. The kiss isn’t just about romance. It’s his desperate attempt to express feelings he can’t put into words. Instead of saying “I love you,” he tries to show her how much she means to him before leaving. The second time Yan Zheng kisses her shows his internal change. At first, he believes protecting her means walking away. But after seeing her reaction to him leaving, he realizes he doesn’t simply want to protect her from afar. He wants a future with her. He finally begins to see Fan Changyu not as someone fragile who needs protection, but as someone strong enough to stand beside him. Asking her to wait a year shows that he knows he must resolve the danger surrounding him, but it also shows that he’s finally admitting he wants her in his life.

This moment highlights how differently Yan Zheng and Fan Changyu view love. Yan Zheng believes loving someone means protecting them, even if that means leaving them behind. Because of his revenge and the danger around him, he thinks the most loving thing he can do is separate himself from her so she can have a peaceful life. Fan Changyu, however, doesn’t see love that way. She doesn’t want to be protected from a distance. She wants to stand beside him and face difficulties together. From her perspective, Yan Zheng isn’t giving her a choice. He refuses to tell her the full truth, decides for her that she’s better off without him, kisses her while leaving her confused, and asks her to wait without giving her certainty.

Fan Changyu was a truly special female character: strong, dependable, and compassionate. What I appreciated most was that her strength never came from being cold or invincible. She worked hard, carried the responsibility of supporting her family, and never hesitated to step up when the people she loved needed her. Even though she started as an ordinary pig butcher with no status or influence, she earned everything through her determination, resilience, and willingness to keep moving forward. She wasn’t waiting for someone to save her or define her worth. She made her own choices, stood by her convictions, and fought for the life she wanted while remaining kind and caring toward those around her. She was capable without losing her compassion and confident without overshadowing the people beside her. It was refreshing to see such a well written strong female character whose strength felt natural and authentic rather than forced. The line, “I’ll slaughter pigs to take care of you,” was simple but surprisingly powerful. It shows her devotion in such a grounded way and fits her character perfectly. Although she doesn’t have the same status or resources as him, especially since he kept his identity hidden, she never holds back. She gives everything she can to build a life with him and stand beside him, making their relationship feel even more sincere.

A Love Letter to Xie Zheng’s Cheekbones (and the Show That Finally Did Them Justice)

Okay, let’s be real. I started Pursuit of Jade for the plot, but I stayed for Zhang Ling He’s face. Specifically, the way the camera worships it. There’s a scene where Xie Zheng just breathes, and the director zooms in like they’re filming a nature documentary about a rare, emotionally constipated jaguar. His micro-expressions? Sir, that twitch of your jaw did more heavy lifting than most actors do in entire seasons. He’s gone from "pretty boy" to "pretty boy who can actually act," and the improvement is stunning. Every longing glance at Fan Changyeng felt like he was solving a 5,000-piece puzzle with his eyeballs alone.

And Tian Xi Wei? She didn’t just play Fan Changyeng—she inhabited her. She made stubbornness adorable and vulnerability fierce. When she glared at Xie Zheng, I felt it in my soul. When she softened? I melted into a puddle of tapioca. Their slow-burn romance wasn’t a fire; it was a geological event—tectonic plates of yearning shifting over 30 episodes until they finally collided in that one kiss that made me scream into my pillow.

Now, the second couple? I’ll be honest—I fast-forwarded like I was being paid per minute. But hey, they got a happy ending, and I’m generous enough to clap for them from the sidelines while waiting for my main ship to hold hands again.

The finale? Chef’s kiss. They gave us a whole episode of closure—no rushed carriage rides into the sunset, no ambiguous stares. Just a proper, satisfying, "we earned this" wrap-up. I slept like a baby knowing Xie Zheng got his jade and his girl.

In conclusion: Zhang Ling He, please keep improving. Your face is a national treasure, and your acting is finally catching up to it. 10/10, would cry over a micro-expression again.

At least this got me out of cdrama slump!

Just finished this and although theres a few misgivings i had, especially towards the end, i’d say this is good that it can get me out of the cdrama slump that i was in for the past few months

By the way, this is my thought on my feed i’ve posted before.
Pursuit of jade (up till ep 27): Finally something able to drag me out from chinese drama slump that i was living in for the past maybe 6months?

Even though i still have couple episodes of fated heart to go thru before finishing it, i tried watching ep 1 of POJ and it was able to keep me going for more episodes. I was pleasantly surprised.

It was not like I was that into the love story between YZ and FCY (though it has its own sparks), but the plotline was able to grip me and make me press next episode till i was basically marathoning 26episodes in less than 2days. A complete win after almost 6months of basically 5% interest in watching chinese dramas for me. Lol

Looking forward to watching more of this. Hopefully it will stay this path and not disappoint me further ahead. Lol

P/S: tian xiwei’s acting so far is consistent. I love how she carries a tough independent girl character so far (both in this and New Life Begins



Now, on with review after completing this.
This story, for me, started out strong and captivating. Even though theres not a lot of lovey dovey moments between ML and FL in the beginning, the plot was capturing, and it makes you want to press next everytime you finished an episode. I guess this went on until about 2/3rd of the series. Towards the end, im losing the capture i dont know why. I can even stop my watching at ep38 with no problem, theres no rush to get to the end. I think it was quite a let down for something starting so strong to be like that. Tbh, i think theres no climax to the main reason everything happened in the past, the core of the conflict was weak, thus the resolution came across as meh, making the end as so and so only, rather than a satisfying plot. The supposed to be grand finale fight between QM, XZ and WY also doesn't make much sense, and it wasnt done that well, almost like a street fight between 3 gangs it seems like. I was so disappointed. I mean, QM even strolled down the aisle and just took the throne in like, 2 mins?! Tsk3

Despite the weak ending, ZLH and TXW did good. Their acting was nice to watch, and the chemistry is there. TXW is especially good in carrying out an independent woman role. Even though near the end, I dont see her being the mighty grand general as per her title. But before that, she aced the role. I dont see how the prince regent and the grand general can just settle down at the countryside like the plot portrayed, and still be in the loops, but well, maybe we just go with it. Lol.

Maybe the alternate ending they gave at the end kind of making up what they botched along the way. Overall, it was a nice watch though, dont get me wrong. At least i finished it within a week while I still have 3 more episodes to go to finish Fated Heart (it has been a couple of months since I started that. Lol)

Best couple representation in a historical drama!

One of my favorite dramas of all time!

Very good romance!
As much as we wanted more Chang yu and Xie Zheng moments, we were spoiled with the 15 first episodes. We saw them get to know each other and falling in love.

Story
I read the book before watching the drama which is most of the time a disaster for me (comparing every moments) but in this case, it was very well done! Production was excellent. The story was well fleshed out.

One very small criticism (mimimal) : would be the typical rushed ending. The earlier war scenes were more impressive and well produced compared to the ending rebellion scene with Qi Min, Wei yan and Xie Zheng.

Another criticism (but really small detail) is I would have loved to see more of Xie Zheng as Marquis of Wu An, as the war lord capable of doing damage. In the book, he is very smart, arrogant, violent/dangerous and very possessive. They smoothed him out in the drama which I liked but I felt that they forgot to give him more personality. They also made him more vulnerable which is good but he shaked off injuries quicker in the book.


I love Chang Yu ! She is one of my favorite female lead. Courageous, responsible, silly, strong, protective and loving. The only thing is they rush through her becoming a general making her look unlike a general contrary to the book version where they laid foundations for her becoming a great leader. Where in the book, Xie Zheng / Yan Zheng taught her to read a lot of characters making it possible to start reading military strategy books. Also, they killed off General He/Tang too quick making it that she had less guidance. They also did not include Xie Zheng making her read a lot of books annotated by him to make her a competent general.

Despite all of these comments, this couple is so good! I loved it. I can't get enough of them. The drama is absolutely beautifully shot. SNOW is the key.

Special mention for the children actors in this drama. Ning Ning and Bao'er were an essential part of the story. The director managed to include them in the story in an essential way that was better then the book. I loved seeing them on-screen. 🥰🥰 Ning Ning is adorable.

This was great. Best drama of these past few years. WATCH IT! IT IS WORTH IT!!

Love

This is one of the best Cdramas I’ve watched in a while. Actually, after the murder of one of my favorites, male leads I stopped watching anyway .
what I want to say is it was beautifully filmed. The chemistry between the male lead and the female lead was perfect. of course I’m in love with the male lead. Who isn’t ? the controversy surrounding the fact that he was so beautiful as a general well if he was ugly and looked like they did 300 years ago sorry I wouldn’t be as invested in this drama. I don’t watch these dramas for historical accuracy. If I need that I’ll go on the history channel.
The fact that there is even any controversy is again astounding to me because they’ve always made the women look like they’re absolutely perfect back in those days and those days were hard so they weren’t looking all beautiful and cosmetically perfect so leave him alone. He was a wonderful actor. He’s the only reason why I will rewatch all 40 episodes again. I need to escape and he’s the perfect escape for me when I’ve worked all day and took care of everything. I wanted to enjoy what I’m seeing.
