First impressions: this show loves its slow-mo

TLDR; Despite the use of a lot of romantic tropes and the slow romance, the confession makes it so worth it. ngl it's hard to follow the mystery part of the story, but I think that's just me (hard to remember all the characters' names). Some parts seem a bit spotty to me, like some characters just disappear from the story (Pan Chi), and we don't know what they're doing while the main story's going down. The ending is also a bit abrupt imo, but it's a happy one. Acting of all the main characters is amazing, esp the Empress Dowager, fl, ml, and LLZ, in no particular order. Music is also enjoyable, and they don't play the main theme song every emotional moment. One and done for me, but it was enjoyable while it lasted.

Story: I watched for the romance btw. There are a lot of typical tropes (some are reversed) you usually find in romance dramas (ml saves fl in fire, ml gets injured and fl takes care of him, childhood sweethearts, 2nd love interests, breaking up, misunderstandings), but it somehow doesn't detract from the relationship between the leads. The part where they break up is really unique, so I'm not entirely mad abt it. I also enjoyed the relationships where they're just friends and nothing more, and the writers don't push the love triangle/rectangle trope. The romance part was kinda iffy at first, but the confession is worth all that banter. Also, the fl might seem kinda annoying at first, but she has some character development, and it mellows out a bit. There are some plot points that didn't make sense to me (ig to develop main leads' relationship??), but it was tolerable. The family dynamics are really sweet..Also, I'm not sure where to put this, but there are some parts where the subtitles appear one by one, matching the actors' emphasis, and I've never seen a show do that before, which was interesting.

Acting/Cast: ml's reactions are so expressive. He can portray something w/o actually saying anything. People keep hating on fl, but at least she apologizes when she knows she's wrong and takes accountability (and a testament to DEX's acting ability). Everyone keeps praising DYX, which I totally agree with, but I'd argue that MZJ's acting is on par with his.

Music: There are lots of variations from the main tracks. Just a lot of pieces and songs that fit with each scene.

Rewatch value: I most likely won't watch this again, but I enjoyed it.

Came for the Mystery, Stayed for Shen Du’s Downfall

I came for Ding Yuxi… and somehow Shen Du became one of the reasons I stayed. 😂

At first, I wasn't even sure how I would feel about this drama because Shen Du was SO cold, intimidating, and difficult to read. Then Yan Xing slowly started getting through that ice-cold exterior, and suddenly this man went from “don't come near me” to basically “where is my wife?” 😭

And THAT was probably my favorite part of the drama.

Shen Du × Yan Xing worked for me because their relationship wasn't instant. It was a slow burn where their feelings developed while they were constantly thrown into investigations, danger, misunderstandings, and family problems. Yan Xing was never just there to be the ML's love interest either. She was genuinely capable at her work, observant, persistent, and willing to put herself in danger to find the truth. Their dynamic felt more like two people learning to trust and rely on each other.

Shen Du, on the other hand… 😭
The character development was SO satisfying to watch.

He started out emotionally guarded and seemingly ruthless, but once he truly fell for Yan Xing, the difference was hilarious. The jealousy. The protectiveness. The way he kept trying to get closer to her. And then Yan Xing rejecting him over and over again while this powerful Imperial Guard basically suffered through it? 😂

THE MAN WAS DOWN BAD.
And Ding Yuxi really sold that transformation for me. His expressions did so much of the work, especially when Shen Du didn't say much. His action scenes were also one of the biggest surprises for me. After watching this, I completely understood why Ding Yuxi kept climbing my actor ranking. The fighting + presence + those Shen Du eyes? Yeah… I get it. 😭

⚖️ What didn't work as well for me
The biggest problem was the plot.
The drama started with a really interesting combination of romance + investigation + court politics, and there were cases that genuinely made me curious. But as the story progressed, the mystery became increasingly complicated, and some of the later revelations felt like the drama was adding another layer when I was already trying to keep track of everything.
The whole Fire Moth / sect / mastermind storyline especially made the plot feel more convoluted than it needed to be. I understood what they were trying to do with Shen Du's family history and revenge, but I honestly think the drama could have been tighter if it had stayed more focused on Shen Du, Yan Xing, their investigations, and the central mystery.
The pacing also wasn't consistently smooth. There were stretches where I was very invested, followed by parts where I was like, “Okay… are we still solving the original problem?” 😂
Some of the emotional and mystery payoffs also came quite late. Even Shen Du's family injustice being properly addressed only near the end made me wish some of these threads had been developed more cleanly throughout the drama.
iQIYI's final episode ultimately brings the story back to Shen Du and Yan Xing and gives them their happy ending, but getting there was definitely a journey.

🚩 My main complaint:
40 episodes felt a little long for the amount of story that actually needed to be told.
I saw other viewers make a similar observation: the main couple and Ding Yuxi were considered major strengths, while some felt the later side plot took too much attention away from Shen Du's revenge and the central romance.

💚 What I REALLY loved
• Yan Xing is capable and independent.
• Shen Du is protective without completely overshadowing her.
• Their relationship actually develops.
• The enemies-to-lovers-ish/forced-marriage setup worked for me.
• Shen Du slowly becoming softer around Yan Xing was EVERYTHING.
• The jealousy scenes. 😂
• The fighting scenes. 🔥
• Ding Yuxi's screen presence.
• The eventual “I am absolutely not letting this woman go” Shen Du.
• And most importantly: THE HAPPY ENDING. 😭
That ending was needed after everything they went through.
And I have to give Yan Xing credit too because she didn't just instantly forgive everything or melt because Shen Du suddenly became affectionate. She made him WORK for it. The fact that Shen Du had to keep trying while Yan Xing repeatedly rejected him was honestly one of the funniest parts of the ending. Even iQIYI's own Episode 40 material highlights Shen Du trying to reconcile and Yan Xing rejecting him repeatedly before they finally come back together.

🔥 Chemistry
8.5/10
Not necessarily the most explosive chemistry I've seen in a C-drama, but the progression worked for me.
I liked watching Shen Du's feelings change before he could even properly admit them himself. There was something satisfying about seeing the supposedly untouchable, intimidating Shen Du become completely helpless around Yan Xing.
Classic:
Cold ML → slowly softens → realizes he's in love → absolutely doomed.

🐢 Slow Burn
YES.
This is one of those dramas where the relationship is more satisfying because you actually watch the shift happen.
Yan Xing initially had more understanding/admiration toward Shen Du, while Shen Du took longer to truly recognize what he felt. That “bad timing” aspect of their feelings was also noticed by other reviewers, particularly the point where Yan Xing began treating him more like a colleague while Shen Du's feelings were getting deeper.

🕵️ Mystery / Investigation
Interesting at the beginning, but inconsistent later.
The investigation element gave the drama something more than just romance, and I liked Yan Xing's investigative ability. But the later conspiracy/revenge threads became too complicated for me, and some revelations felt more dragged out than necessary.

💔 Angst
There was enough to hurt me, especially with Shen Du's past, his family, the poison storyline, and everything that happened later.
But thankfully, this did NOT become another “let's destroy everyone emotionally and then give them a vague ending” drama.
After all the suffering, I needed that happy ending. 😭

👀 Overall
Melody of Golden Age wasn't a perfect drama for me.
The plot could have been tighter. Some of the mystery/conspiracy material became unnecessarily complicated, and I definitely felt the 40-episode length. But the main couple, character development, action scenes, and Ding Yuxi's Shen Du carried this drama for me.
And honestly?
I started this drama thinking I was just going to watch another historical mystery-romance.
I ended it thinking:
“Okay Ding Yuxi… I SEE YOU.” 😂
Another one added to the list of dramas that made me appreciate an actor more after watching them.
Final rating: 9.5/10 ⭐

Not because the plot was flawless—but because when Shen Du and Yan Xing were at the center of the story, I was invested.
And Shen Du going from terrifying Imperial Guard to a man repeatedly getting rejected by his own wife?
Worth watching for that alone. 😂❤️

Good one

Melody of the Golden Age — I liked the drama, especially the chemistry between the leads.
In the beginning, the male protagonist's character was rude and arrogant. He never spoke in a humble manner. He always carried an attitude on his face. Everyone was scared of him, and nobody praised him; they always said bitter words behind his back.
But this kind of behavior was only seen in the first few episodes. After getting married, he gradually became softer in his behaviour, though on the surface he seemed the same.
On the other hand, the female protagonist's character was humble and helpful. She was kind to everyone and never held grudges against anyone. She also had a past story with the male protagonist.

I liked the character of Lu Chui Chui as well and her love story.

I liked the performances by the leads and the emotions of love, hatred, and annoyance they expressed through their acting. I must say their expressions were incredible.

Overall, the drama is good, and I recommend it.

Started for the mystery, stayed for Shen Du

Real rating is 11 for the music & 10 for romance so 8.9/10

I have a crush on Ding YuXi. He’s so *hawt* in this role and I wish the show was faster to get better *hits* of hotness seretonin. That said it takes about 10 episodes for us to get more of that the serious/stoic Shen Du.

I think the plot overall could have been a bit tighter. There’s a lot of moving variables and characters that make sense and connect well, but at the same time don’t really affect the plot. We spend so much time on the prince and princess but they don’t really actually add to the plot and their storylines dragged the overall experience. I know it was to cause intrigue and make us think maybe one of them is evil but that line of thought doesn’t even sustain itself with what we are given so I feel like the show would have been much stronger if it was closer to 35 episodes instead and removed some of the extra noise.

Also did they really have to kill Marshall Xu and Yun Que 😭 I know they were the “least important couple” but they were still so cute and their death was so sad. Always gotta kill a couple or something for the tears and stakes but I feel like coma and they wake up would have sufficed. Whatever. I saw it coming that a secondary couple would end with tragedy and once he had that cute moment about the wedding it was game over.

I would definitely rewatch it but skip the parts that were more espionage than general mystery or romance. The antagonist is just an actual crazy man that needed a better mother and therapy so he was pretty one dimensional and boring in that way. I’m still not sure I understand his mother’s motives for traumatizing her child but sure let’s go with that.

Last but not least THIS OST was amazing. I have been pretty generous to music of shows giving 10 if they fit the overall show, but even when I took a break from this show I was listing to the OST so I had to give it an 11 bc it was THAT good. I wish Ryan Ding had more songs!

### Original Thoughts & Ideas
- Good vs evil is pretty black and white in this show unlike something like The Prisoner of Beauty. We have some “gray” characters but even they are mostly good or mostly bad. The Empress Dowager seemed to have in fact not wanted the consort’s child be the emperor but it’s not clear how much of a role she *actually* played in the consort’s suicide. But the Black Fiend was truly just a man who saw his mom die and made a cult about reincarnation to kinda, not really deal with the trauma. I almost want to label him a victim and in a way he is because his whole life was built off this narrative his mother fed him. But he’s still a “black” character. He isn’t nice to his adoptive sisters, he attacks the woman he claims to love, and throws any blame of his actions on the Empress Dowager for believing what was pretty solid evidence against innocent but framed people. We could label Shen Du as “gray” because he’s a “dark horse” type guy but I would more call him “good” with a wall as protection due to his own childhood trauma.
- It is interesting that both men witnessed extreme wrong doing to their parent(s) but one chose the path of righteousness and the other of sinister obsession.

A messy plot with decent actors and missed opportunities

For a drama with such a nice title, I was expecting something abit more mature.

It is clear that they went with an overall direction that is meant to please younger audiences with over the top editing, slow mow, fighting scenes, visual effects, stylish poses etc. Same with how they directed the FL and ML and their romance.

The show had many good premises, but it ended up being an absolute mess of story line.

1. Forced arranged marriage where a smart and defiant FL is not scared of ML, eventually aligning in solving cases together.
2. An empress dowager regent trying to fend off the wolves and protecting the throne for her grandson whilst also trying to promote women into power and Official positions.
3. Marshall Xu raising a bottom up police force to fight off the crimes of the nobles.
4. A sect spreading throughout the state brainwashing people and threatening the safety of the state and the throne

Any of these premises would have worked as a great drama in itself, but combined together, it was very chaotic. I definitely feel like it's a wasted potential, I wish the story line was consolidated and targeted towards more mature audiences. If they truly wanted to go with a silly romance and over the top action with good looking actors, they didn't need to go with such a convoluted plot.

Now, in terms of the premise of the show, FL acts according to her age, she is supposed to be young and willfull, so they went in that direction both woth how she acts and the romance itself. The actress in real life is very young, so making it the most sexy, steamy drama isn't very fitting in this instance. The story itself would have worked if the FL was older, almost considered "spinster" in those times. It would have been fun to see a "discarded" FL that has career ambitions slowly win over the scary and unapproachable ML. No need for the childhood connection.

There are some really interesting characters in the show, the actors do great/decent job. I appreciate some of the storylines in the drama, like FLs family and the empress dowager regent. It's a drama that is totally fine to watch in the background, but has little rewatch value, and relies on many tired tropes and this very empty feminism agenda.

I would give this a 6.5/10 in MDL scale. I fastforwarded alot of the last 10 episodes, because most of the scenes didnt really add much to the story.

This drama is absolutely amazing!
The actors were very natural at acting the story line was super intriguing as well. I loved the chemistry between the actors she is a scribe but acts kinda like an detective with the ml they both go on to find the truth but both of them have thier own secrets but they all come together. I loved this trope of cdrama, both the character falling in love was so natural and love how they both protect each other
But there are some werid things
1) the kiss ( I love u ding yuxi but your kissing is awkward lol but this doesn't really affect me that much neither to the story line or thier way of romance in the drama)
2) the events following the ending got me confused don't get me it's not bad or sad it's happy it's just like u finish watching it then go HUH? lol but still worth watching due to the storyline

A Lazy Copy& Paste Plot

ML is supposed to be a fierce ruthless no nonsense commander of the Imperial Security Bureau nicknamed White Ghost, feared by all in the realm while FL is a little no rank scribe at Ministry of Justice with extensive investigative skills. Their fates got entangled in an arranged marriage when FL’s sister got betrothed to ML with an imperial decree under the conniving Prime Minister’s workings. FL’s sister ran away with her beloved to escape the marriage and FL was forced to step up and replace her as bride to avoid the family being implicated. ML was never interested in the marriage, and as he did with all his previous brides, he tried to scare FL into running away. To his surprise, FL was adamant to stay as she was threatened by the Prime Minister to become his spy in the commander’s mansion. ML decided to let her stay to see what other tricks the Prime Minister had in store for him, as he too was investigating his family’s framing many years ago which he believed related to the Prime Minister. Cases came up one after another as ML and FL uncovered clues leading to the truth behind his family’s demise, and they developed feelings for each other in the process.

Honestly at first i was ok with the FL cuz this character seemed to be a brilliant and upright one. But as the story progresses, I find her extremely annoying because ML always ends up needing to save FL each time she goes on to investigate these cases. Apparently the FL isnt really smart, but just a stubborn damsel in distress who has a knack for investigating things. Her only skill is to find out the bottom of things, and not someone who can think a few steps ahead and cover her back while doing her thing. It’s truly annoying cuz she ends up getting in trouble every single time and implicates everyone around her.

As for ML, i first saw him in White Cat Legend and then in Love in Pavilion, and thought he is really not bad of an actor. But i think he did better in series where he doesnt have a love interest. And it doesnt make things any better when the FL’s character is too annoying and cry excessively. Many of the emotional scenes in here are not naturally conveyed, i failed to feel the sadness the characters are feeling as they cry, especially when the FL cry so dang much to the point of my annoyance. That is how detached the characters look for me. Excessive public display of affection between the main leads after the so called love confessions are also too over the top and looks much out of place in ancient time. As if the screenwriter was trying to force out the main couple’s love too much to the audience. Maybe even the screenwriter thought the actors dont have much spark between them so they plant this kind of excessive expression of love to fill in the void and convince the audience.

Overall, the only characters that are fun to watch had been Wu Da Ren (FL’s boss) and her mom! Those two are hilarious and i look forward to see them with each episode.

There’s also too many flashbacks and backstory of unimportant side characters that really don’t have any impact to the main plot other than just to lengthen it. The ending is also too predictable. The palace coup arc was like a copy&paste from other tv shows, it’s lazy writing on the screenwriter’s part. I don’t know how it went with the novel as i havent read it (and don’t intend to), so am not sure if the novel’s plot is as bad as the adaptation (cuz many adaptation tend to divert from the original novels).

Most painful to watch is the final sword fight between ML and the villain. I really think the increased speed just to show the fighters’ prowess is too excessive which made it look comical. ML had better fights in White Cat Legend and Love in Pavilion, so this problem here lies on the fight choreographer (if they even hired one) and the editing.

The ‘divorcing-FL-to-avoid-implicating-her’ is also too old of a plot. So old it has rusted! I am so disgusted at this type of plot, so i couldnt even finish episode 40 cuz I think the FL should give ML harder time before reconciling. If your spouse don’t think you can shoulder their burden with you, why bother being together at all? Sick of this lame excuse for love.

The songs are great though. But because I didnt like the story, I am not adding them to my playlist as to not remind myself of this show everytime it plays.

Initial set up for cdrama historical detective court love story, the first few episodes were a bit long in establishing the charaters and trying to keep track of all the parties for future reference will be challenging. I am eager to see how much they continue to uncover of the childhood connections with each episode. I feel it would have been sweeter to see more of why the FL is so open minded and trusting towards the ML.

Ryan Ding has matured so much into this charater, I Love it. Always Love to see his signature eyebrow raise -"Intrigue" facial gestures. I find his growth into this more mature, dark, cautious charater is very believable. ML has many skills and secrets that will slowly reveal themselves to those in his most trusted circle. Thankfully his arranged marraige and wife FL turns out to be a blessing in the shadows for them as well.

Amongst all the tense secrets and plotting we have the moments of cute CP learning they can trust and lean on one-another.
