Johno Joe makes a living as a professional stand-in actor for hire to play a relative, lover, or friend for her clients and attend ceremonies and gatherings. Saegusa Nanpei, who works at a Chinese restaurant Joe frequents, has a crush on Joe. One day in August, Joe attends a funeral as a stand-in and meets Hase Kaoru, the strange man she once saw in her dream. Later that day, Nanpei and Kaoru embrace each other at the Chinese restaurant. Kaoru was Nanpei's best friend who had been missing for five years. As Nanpei stands there, happy to find him safe, Kaoru reveals, "I ran into Izumi at the funeral.” Moments later, Joe appears pretending to be their old friend Izumi. Unable to tell the truth to Kaoru, who believes he has reunited with his friends after a whole decade, Nanpei asks Joe to continue impersonating Izumi until they go their separate ways.
