"Ikkoken" is a restaurant that looks like a Chinese restaurant, quietly standing in a back alley. Run by a mysterious and talented owner who boasts that he will "serve anything" that the customers want, this restaurant is where various human dramas are born every day. The customers who visit are all different, both men and women of all ages. Some of them have been brought there by the owner, but they are all lost in life in the big city of Tokyo and a little tired. The owner instantly sees through the troubles in the lives of such customers and serves the highest quality food that is best suited to them. His cooking skills are undoubtedly first class, but the problem is his terrible "ability to misunderstand" that he uses every time. He confidently gives out completely off-base advice and famous words, with misunderstandings from an oblique angle,e such as "How can that happen?" and miraculous assumptions. The customers are confused, angry, and laughing at this completely off-base owner. But it's strange that everyone leaves the restaurant a little more energetic than when they came in... Reviews
It was delicious – but what ...?
“Meshi wo Kurahite Hana to Tsugu” is wonderfully absurd. Each episode follows the same arc: (1) troubled customer is introduced; (2) overly-dramatic cooking is staged; (3) delicious food is served; (4) odd conversation follows. I enjoyed the gentle misunderstandings of the first 3 episodes but thought the repetitive, single-set format would not keep my interest for all 12 episodes… Let me say, you should press on! It somehow gets more goofy without ever crossing into completely unbelievable (I mean, it’s not like space aliens appear...). Some of the guest actors are fantastic – really drawing out the humor with their few minutes on-camera (Marui Wan!). Nakamura Toru as the main actor is perfect in the role. He delivers a great balance of clueless and caring so you continue to root for his character even as he takes it to the edge. Overall, a warm, quirky comedy worth watching.
