Sins and Secrets
This series is labeled as horror and me personally, a person who can't stand horror movies/series, enjoyed it a lot. The storyline and the idea of this series is just unique and new(maybe because I haven't watched much). I've seen some reviews that says the cast can't really act and don't have much facial expression but I disagree as I believe that was how the character(Saeng Gang) was meant to be portrayed. Some reviews even said that there's no "justice" but I believe that this story is to teach us to not hold on to resentment and hatred, just let it go and you will live(well in the case of this story, die) peacefully.The first and second episode really caught my attention and made me really interested but as the story progressed, it got a bit less interesting but not entirely boring. The plotThe main characters had such good chemistry and the pairing is amazing.
Another thing I need to talk about is the cinematography and all the effects. It was amazing and well executed. The spirits and the spirit world, everything just look so amazing and I really really love it.

The Best Show I've Watched In 2026 So Far
I don't know why this show is getting so much hate in these reviews. I guess it's just not the taste of the reviewers here. This show has become my absolute favorite this year so far. I was hooked from the start. The story is very interesting with many twists and turns. The fantasy/horror/haunted elements were top tier for me. There were a couple VFX scenes that weren't the best, but they didn't effect the watch for me. The majority of the FX were awesome and very atmospheric. The music had me as well. It was so awesome and very fitting. This reminded me of an old game, Dynasty Warriors, that I used to play. Loved it so much and haven't had that feeling from any other kdrama thus far, and I've watched a lot through the years.I found this to be so satisfying of a watch. There were definitely times I was yelling at my screen over some of these villains that I hated, but it felt more realistic in the way they were handled, given they are royalty. I loved both leads and was drawn into their stories. Both leads had a huge part in this story, not just one. He was definitely stronger which, given his past, makes tons of sense, but both were necessary in the story. I found her to be strong as well, which I really enjoy and don't see often.
If you enjoy fantasy, action, and a little horror, this is a great watch for you. It was fun, thrilling, mysterious, exciting, and even had a little humor in there. It gave me a little bit of a Sweet Home vibe, but I enjoyed it so much more. I found the ending quite satisfying as well, which I didn't expect. My husband got hooked after watching a few scenes. So after I finished this, I restarted it with him and I'm watching it all over again. I noticed a few things I didn't see the first time and I'm thoroughly enjoying the re-watch
I am a gamer, so maybe that has made me biased toward this, I don't know, but it's a masterpiece for me and it's going in my favorite dramas list for sure

A thrilling dark fantasy where ghosts are the least of your problems…
A well written dark fantasy, beautifully shot and produced! The plot is actually both pretty straightforward and amazingly thrilling at the same time. I especially enjoyed the little twist with Saenggang’s grandmother being the actual big bad mastermind behind the Evil Ghost. It makes perfect sense in terms of motive, practicality, profitability, as well as historical harem fight logic, and yet i was hooked into the show’s narrative of the Queen Dowager as the mastermind, so bravo writing team 😃😃! I also like the reveal that the late Crown Prince was always evil, that the King didn’t randomly kill his son, but did so because the CP killed his siblings first. Was I slightly annoyed that the very obviously dark-spirit, arguably Evil King was redeemed by the narrative in the end? Yeah sure. Especially with the story showing the late CP doing the exact same thing his father did, but was punished because he got caught and found out the truth. Because for me, the current King doesn’t deserve the crown any more than his dead siblings or his son whom he killed for discovering his secret. And the fact that our MCs spend the whole show resenting the King just to do everything to save him and spare him in the end. He doesn’t deserve to live after all that he did and the people that died by his hand/because of him. Ig they couldn’t let the throne be in chaos, and that he “atoned” for his sins by promising to suffer for eternity when he dies, but for me that plot resolution is weak 😭💀. Ig in a sense, he’ll always be haunted by his crimes, so yeah 😭.
I like that the message of the story is there are no ghost more sinister than the human evil. The story started with villainzing the ghosts and spirits, and ends with every arc revealing the real evil is the living human all along. From the Queen Dowager, to the King, to the King’s mother, they all are the real evils, scheming and killing innocent people. And the spirits are the poor souls just seeking justice. And although the Crown Prince being the main villain, the titular “East Palace Curse”, he too was shown to be sinful when he was alive. And I also like that despite everything, our MCs seek to let the souls pass to the other side in peace. Even Gucheon who claimed he didn’t want to send the Crown Prince to oblivion, while yes, avoid that choice out of fear of turning into a vengeful ghost like the CP, also avoid doing that out of his own compassion.
I also like the portrayal of parental relationships here. There’s all very dysfunctional, but still stem from a twisted type of love and care. Like the King being ruthless and evil, still care and spare for his only (?) daughter Saenggang, despite his disdain for those who can hear ghosts (stem from his own son learning his secrets), and her mother KNOWING his secrets. And even when he killed the CP, he was sad and haunted by it. And of course, our MCs’ relationships with their mothers. Saenggang who longs for and bear a grudge against whomever killed her mother, and Gucheon who is haunted by the death and oblivion of his mother. And then the King himself and his relationship with both his mothers, which are both typical of historical palace intrigue drama relationship, filled with schemes and resentment, but also ties back with his relationship with his children. The strained relationship being the cause of the CP’s villainy and yet Saenggang’s empathy.
Shout out to Gucheon and Saenggang! What an amazing duo! And although they had little romantic moments, their relationship and chemistry was beautiful. It really hits different when she drugged him and sacrificed herself to distract and kill the CP, and when Gucheon cuts his own neck to come save Saenggang faster, that was peak 🔥🔥
I did enjoy the leads Nam Joohyuk and Roh Yeonseo’s performances. It was nice. But my outstanding performances go to the King - Cho Seungwoo, Queen Dowager - Jang Youngnam and the King’s mother - Hwang Younghee. They are too good at being villains it’s sickening 🔥🔥 10/10 performances!!
Overall, I had fun with this one! I do like dark fantasy and last time I watched smth similar was Dear Hongrang. Pretty different dramas plot wise, but they give me same mystery dark, ritualistic vibes. Shoutout to music team as well, nice soundtrack! Bonus points because this one is HE! Although the leads didn’t officially end up tgt, they’re both alive and traveling tgt, so 10/10 for the HE! 🙂↕️🙂↕️

visual masterpiece with a weak plot
watched this drama on the second day after release and wanted to share my aftertaste and impressions.what impressed me the most was the visuals: incredible shots, costumes, locations and cgi. i haven’t seen this level of graphics in any korean drama yet. i was literally in awe with every frame, pure aesthetic pleasure. the soundtrack perfectly complements the atmosphere and makes the drama more rhythmic and stylish.
palace intrigue is pretty standard, like in regular historical dramas. i think this concept could’ve used more originality.
for the main roles i would’ve chosen different actors, especially the male lead. i didn’t feel any charisma or special spark from them, unlike the main antagonist kwak dong yeon, who sadly had much less screen time. as a result, i didn’t feel that chemistry everyone’s screaming about. we weren’t really shown the development of their relationship, so for me they’re just soulmates ready to die for each other. though i found it pretty illogical how in the final episodes the fl gave the ml sleeping pills and went alone to the other side (such a cliche, and they clearly couldn’t do without it…).
the plot felt messy and sometimes dragged, it lacked deeper development, so in my head it’s just separate chaotic fragments.
but despite these flaws, i still rate it highly. the watch was light and pleasant, and for korean fantasy-horror dramas this is a noticeable step forward.

cinematography that transport you completely to
another era.
The storyline is gripping and complex with political
intrigue romance and action woven together seamlessly.
Every character is written with real depth and the
performances across the entire cast are outstanding
without exception.
The lead performance in particular is absolutely
mesmerizing and carries the weight of this epic story
with tremendous skill and presence. You feel every
emotion deeply throughout the entire drama.
Indian and Pakistani audiences can fully enjoy this
masterpiece in Hindi dubbed format which is available
in excellent quality. The dubbing does complete justice
to the grandeur and emotion of this epic production.
If you enjoy historical Korean dramas with epic
storytelling and stunning production this is absolutely
essential watching. One of the finest dramas of 2026
without any question.

The East Palace: Where the Greatest Evil Isn't Supernatural
STORYThe East Palace is a cinematic, visually stunning occult fantasy that takes place during the Joseon era. I believe Netflix labeled it as horror, but I'd describe it more as a supernatural mystery infused with palace intrigue. From the very beginning, the drama makes one thing clear: the true monsters aren't the spirits haunting the palace; they're the humans and the sins they commit. Every episode ends with a compelling twist or cliffhanger that kept me glued to the screen, and I ended up devouring the drama in a single day.
The drama clearly draws inspiration from Netflix productions like Kingdom and Stranger Things. While the individual plot elements aren't entirely new, the combination of Korean occult folklore, political intrigue, and fantasy action feels fresh thanks to the show's excellent execution. As someone who isn't very familiar with Korean mythology, I especially enjoyed seeing it being brought to life on screen. The action sequences set between the human world and the spirit realm were particularly exciting and visually imaginative.
Both leads are characters who have been wronged and cast aside in different ways. In a palace filled with deception and cruelty, it was heartwarming to watch them gradually learn to trust one another and become each other's source of comfort. I also appreciated that the writers didn't force a conventional romance into the story. Instead, their relationship develops naturally through their small gestures, loyalty, and the sacrifices they're willing to make for one another. Even without explicit romance, their emotional connection feels genuine and deeply earned. Although this is presented as a limited series, I'd happily watch another season exploring where the story could take our two leads and their spirit companion.
The cinematography deserves special praise. Every frame feels polished and cinematic, from the haunting spirit designs to the striking contrast between the human world and the supernatural realm. My only minor criticism is that some of the action scenes relied on overly shaky camera work, making them harder to follow than they needed to be.
ACTING / CAST
The entire cast delivered excellent performances.
Cho Seung Woo and Jang Young Nam were absolutely captivating as the antagonists. I'd previously seen Jang Young Nam in another drama, and I almost didn't recognize her here. Her transformation was remarkable. Not only did she convincingly portray a character nearly two decades older than herself, but even her voice, mannerisms, and overall presence were completely different. That's a veteran actress for you!
Nam Joo Hyuk and Roh Yoon Seo were equally compelling as the leads. Nam Joo Hyuk brought convincing emotional depth to a reluctant antihero who discovers something worth fighting for, while Roh Yoon Seo skillfully portrayed a young woman searching for answers while contending with a complicated relationship with her family.
MUSIC
The soundtrack felt cinematic in every sense, perfectly complementing both the breathtaking visuals and the shifting emotional tone of the story.
REWATCH VALUE
Because much of the drama's appeal comes from its mysteries and plot twists, the biggest surprises naturally lose their impact after a first viewing. That said, I think it's the kind of series that rewards a rewatch. Knowing the full story allows you to catch subtle details and foreshadowing you may have missed the first time.
OVERALL
The East Palace combines several of my favorite genres—mystery, fantasy, supernatural, and action—and I absolutely enjoyed it from start to finish. Its blend of Korean occult folklore with palace intrigue gives the series a distinctive identity, elevated by gorgeous cinematography, strong performances, and consistently engaging storytelling. If you're looking for a stylish supernatural mystery with compelling characters, excellent production values, and just the right amount of action, then The East Palace is worth watching.

just finished watching this series and I am speechless. I don't know how to actually describe it but it was a masterpiece. the storyline,the plot ,the theme,the atmosphere and the cast, everything was perfect.I hope they make a season two because it only left me hungry.

Loved it!
Loved every single episode of this drama. It wasn't really that scary to me, but certainly gripping at times. There's also humour, intrigue, and whilst not romantic, there's unmistakable attraction between our leads.There is a lot of story packed into the relatively few episodes, and I binged it in one go.
Great cast, and I felt the overriding story was quite sad. Backgrounds of characters are scant; enough to provide their motivation, but with so few episodes, more would have been at the expense of other content.
Karma is a bitch, that's for sure!
A specific aspect reminded of Keanu Reeves' film, Constantine, far more than Stranger Things, which I keep seeing it likened to.
I happily recommend this, as it kept me super-glued and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A kingdom haunted by the people who rule it.
This series had me hooked, every episode was packed with action, intrigue, and meaningful plot progression. Most historical dramas revolve around palace politics and manipulation, but The East Palace takes it a step further. Nearly every character is morally grey. Everyone has blood on their hands, and the series doesn't shy away from exposing the darkest aspects of royalty and the pursuit of power. Ironically, the ghosts are better than the living, whose greed, ambition, and hunger for power is far more terrifying.Every actor, from the leads to the supporting cast, villains, and even minor characters, delivered memorable performances. The King was one of the highlights for me—a complex character who remained more mysterious than the plot itself. The Queen Dowager was one of the most compelling antagonists I have watched recently- narcissistic, power-hungry, and utterly ruthless.
Another refreshing aspect was the romance—or rather, the restraint shown in portraying it. The relationship never overshadowed the story. Both leads were emotionally guarded, naturally mistrustful, yet it was obvious through their actions that they deeply cared for one another. Their partnership and camaraderie felt mature, believable, and far more compelling than an overly dramatic romance.
The CGI was also well done. The supernatural world, particularly in the earlier episodes, gave me strong Stranger Things vibes. More importantly, the series knew when to rely on visual effects and when to let the writing, action choreography, and talented cast carry the story. It never felt excessive. Also the Korean mythological creatures were explained earlier on, which helped me keep up with the story. The ending leaves the door open for a sequel. While I would love to see one, I also appreciate that the series ended on such a strong note rather than overstaying its welcome.
If you're looking for a period drama that has mystery, ghosts, shady characters, and a genuinely engaging story over clichéd love tropes, this one is absolutely worth your time.

Great for a binge~
I was actually whining about a modern day horror flick being absent from the Kdrama world as of late. My fav genre is all about the zombies. 🤩While this one was was a historical one, it managed to hit all the right places~And it wouldn't be a Korean historical unless it was about the king..........it had ALL the makings of what you'd normally expect because these are WAY to predictable.
Plots against the throne. Faction vs faction. Heir replacements. Bad king. Bad QD. Bad sons and princes and ostracized royal members. Public hate for shamanism while employing it in secret. Cover ups. Useless murders and tormented palace staff taking falls........the supernatural horror is what makes this good though and it was used well. None of these scenes were lacking in visuals and makeup. Cast knocked it out of the park. And despite being able to forecast the plot somewhat, there were a couple of good twists that had me reeling in surprise and shock~
This a solid watch and it a nice return for the ML. It looked like a door was being left open for a 2nd run, if so I'll be there to watch for sure~

A Brilliant, Immersive Dark-Fantasy Sageuk with a "Stranger Things" Twist
The ReviewIf you are tired of the standard romance-heavy palace politics and want a fast-paced, atmospheric thrill ride, The East Palace is an absolute breath of fresh air. I went in not knowing entirely what to expect and ended up knocking out all 8 episodes in a single day. It completely hooks you from start to finish.
A Fresh Take on History & Social Status
What makes this drama stand out is its grit. It delivers a deeply compelling, darker take on royalty, showing how an entire empire’s foundation can be built ruthlessly on the backs of the less fortunate who are deemed "unworthy." The show masterfully portrays how compressing that much class-based trauma and dark history into one physical location can have immense, lingering effects on both physical and mental health.
It is a dark fantasy that skips the fluff—it isn't romance-heavy, it avoids draggy tropes, and it gets straight to the point.
World-Building & Video Game Potential
The highlight of the production is the Realm of Gwi. The show gives off massive Stranger Things vibes, with the characters essentially having to navigate a beautifully eerie, high-stakes "Upside Down" mirror world to hunt spirits. The immersion is incredible. In fact, between the mechanics of entering the spirit world, drawing power, and the creative weapon techniques, this entire concept is so mechanically rich it could easily be adapted into a dark-fantasy video game.
Unlike Chinese dramas, which have highly dedicated Wuxia/Xianxia genres for heavy martial arts choreography, Korean sageuks usually stick to grounded military history. Seeing this level of stylized swordplay and spirit-slaying choreography in a K-drama felt incredibly fresh and satisfying.
Character Arcs & Complex Performances
The character progression across the board is exceptionally well-handled:
The Leads: Nam Joo-hyuk delivers a fantastic performance as Gu-cheon. The visual double-casting play between him and the late Crown Prince adds an incredible layer of mystery. Roh Yoon-seo’s character, Saeng-gang, can be a little annoying early on, but her growth into an active, ride-or-die teammate who steps up to face the generational curse with him is written perfectly.
The King: Cho Seung-woo plays a terribly frustrating, selfish king who literally forms a home team by force to save his own skin at the expense of others. While it's wild that he gets spared in the end, it sets up an incredibly satisfying poetic justice. He has to live with the weight of his lies, and if we get a Season 2, he is definitely primed to get dashed away.
Final Thoughts
The finale leaves the door wide open for an expanded lore, especially with the literal and spiritual chains Gu-cheon is left carrying. The East Palace leaves a massive impact, boasts stellar writing, and proves that sometimes a short, tightly packed 8-episode count is exactly what a fantasy thriller needs. Highly recommended!

The East Palace is a beautifully shot historical fantasy with an intriguing mystery and strong performances. The palace setting, cinematography, and suspenseful atmosphere keep you hooked from the start. The chemistry between the leads feels natural, and the blend of romance, politics, and supernatural elements is well-balanced. While the pacing is a little slow in the beginning, it builds into an engaging story that's worth sticking with. A Must watch.
