The Smartest Political Thriller You’ll See This Year

Let’s get this out of the way, I chased this drama the moment the promo trailer dropped.

Ju Ji-hoon had already earned my complete trust after watching him command the screen in both Trauma Code and Kingdom, and Ha Ji-won remains one of my favorite actresses after Chocolate became my second Perfect 10 of last year, right behind Doubt. So when I learned these two would be leading Climax, a political thriller penned and directed by Lee Ji-won of Miss Baek fame, this became an immediate must-watch for me.

I am so glad I followed that instinct. What followed was ten episodes of some of the best and smartest political thriller storytelling I’ve experienced in years. I came into this expecting something closer to The West Wing, a sharp political drama with ideological clashes and backroom maneuvering. What I got instead was something far more dangerous, House of Cards injected with pure concentrated chaos and stitched together with what I can only describe as “quantum storytelling.”

In quantum mechanics, particles exist in superposition, occupying contradictory states simultaneously until observed. This drama does the exact same thing with character motivations, plot points, and moral positions. Bang Tae-seop genuinely cares about people he helps AND strategically cultivates them as assets. Both states are true. Simultaneously. Chu Sang-ah carries real trauma from exploitation AND weaponizes that trauma strategically. Every character exists in multiple emotional and moral states at once. Everyone lies, manipulates, protects, betrays, loves, and destroys simultaneously, yet somehow the narrative never collapses under the weight of its own complexity. The show never forces you to choose which interpretation is real. It holds all contradictions as equally valid, and two viewers can watch the same scene, come away with opposite readings, and both be correct.

Ju Ji-hoon plays Bang Tae-seop, a prosecutor who clawed from poverty to political power, carrying his father's unjust death as both wound and fuel. Ji-hoon delivers a masterclass in controlled intensity, balancing calculated calm with explosive strategic brutality. You cannot read him. Is he compassionate or calculating? Protective or manipulative? The answer is yes, to all of it, at once. His crashout rage scene in episode nine is one of the best emotional beats I've seen from a male lead this year. Opposite him, Ha Ji-won as Chu Sang-ah occupies victim and strategist simultaneously without ever letting one side collapse the other. Her transformation in episode ten, fully embracing her monster side to secure her ambition, was genuinely breathtaking character evolution. Their chemistry is electric despite this not being a romance, and they were perfectly cast to hold quantum states without breaking.

The supporting cast matches this energy completely. Cha Joo-young as Lee Yang-mi deserves special mention because Yang-mi is positioned as the antagonist, though that word needs the biggest asterisk ever. She wields chaebol power with zero restraint, and her strategic plays are surgical strikes designed to obliterate. Cha Joo-young makes her simultaneously the most detestable and most brilliant character on screen. You loathe her. You respect her ruthlessness. Both feelings coexist without resolution. Nana as Hwang Jeong-won and Oh Jung-se as the WR Group heir twins round out a supporting cast where everyone devours their roles without overstaying their welcome.

The plot itself is familiar political thriller territory. Morally grey people doing morally grey things to climb over corpses toward power. Think House of Cards with strategic precision dialed up and safety rails completely removed. What elevates Climax is how it maintains contradictory motivations as simultaneous truth rather than competing interpretations. Every route to power contains structural contradictions that sabotage other power bases. You cannot grab a narrative thread and follow it to clean conclusions because the web doesn't have a correct reading. Most dramas eventually collapse the wave function, telling you actually he genuinely cared or actually it was all manipulation. Climax refuses. It maintains superposition for all ten episodes through airtight structural integrity.

Director Lee Ji-won kept every character's internal logic intact, every universe rule consistent, across constant escalation without breathing room. I've chastised dramas for far less. The fact that Climax never betrayed its own architecture while maintaining relentless pacing is genuinely impressive. The drama is absolutely dramatic, but it stays grounded the way a tightrope walker stays grounded, technically still touching the wire even while performing impossible feats. It never devolves into makjang where logic gets sacrificed for shock value. Every explosion has a fuse you can trace back to someone's deliberate strategy.

The visual craft serves this narrative perfectly. Wide lens shots emphasize separation, close-ups create intimacy, and the color palette darkens as moral corruption peaks. The parallel sequence in the finale showing Tae-seop ascending political stairs while Sang-ah walks the film festival red carpet is genius cinematography. The OST selection is consistently on point too, with Rise by Lim Ji-soo and Black Star by Nana as standouts that tell their own story within the drama.

The ending maintains this superposition all the way through. I walked away completely satisfied while simultaneously ready for potential season two. Both states exist because the open-endedness is thematic rather than mechanical. The thesis is complete: power is absolute, it cannot be defeated, it only reorients itself. The show doesn't give clean happy resolution because that would betray everything it demonstrated. Instead, it shows you unchecked power and trusts you to handle the discomfort.

I have to be honest about limitations though. Is Climax perfect? To me, absolutely, because quantum storytelling hits every frequency my analytical brain craves. But I'm aware this is extremely niche. The narrative web will genuinely challenge viewers who need straightforward plotting. Some plot threads receive resolution but not deep exploration, which might feel insufficient to viewers wanting more time spent on heavy elements like the sex trafficking backstory. The ending won't satisfy viewers wanting redemption arcs or happy conclusions. Mature content warnings apply throughout with suicide, sexual assault, blackmail, and drugging handled unflinchingly. If you need clear moral lines or heroes to root for without ethical compromise, this will frustrate you to the point of abandonment.

But if you can handle that, what Climax offers is extraordinary. This is what happens when writers trust their story enough to refuse easy answers, when directors trust audiences to sit with ambiguity, and when actors trust material enough to occupy contradictions without apologizing. This is cerebral chess between morally bankrupt brilliant strategists, executed with surgical narrative precision. It's controlled chaos that never collapses into incoherence. I started with restrained one-episode-per-night pacing. By the end, I couldn't stop. I deployed my sleep-on-it failsafe to objectively reevaluate after emotions stabilized. Climax maintained its hold. The assessment didn't waver.

If you love House of Cards, can handle zero redemption, and want quantum storytelling executed flawlessly, this is a cerebral feast. If you need traditional satisfaction, skip immediately. But if controlled chaos sounds like exactly what your brain craves, welcome to hell.

Toxic Pointlessness

​At the beginning of the series, there were details regarding abuse that really caught my interest. However, as the show progressed, these details surfaced far too late. Moreover, the overwhelming male dominance in the cast was a major disappointment for me. The romance between the two female leads was given very little screen time. It felt like these elements were suddenly shoehorned into the 6th or 7th episodes as an afterthought because the show wasn't gaining enough traction. In that regard, the series failed. While the premise is excellent, the opening is perfect, and there are several compelling scenes along with a stellar cast and atmosphere—the overall execution felt slow and aimless.
​The most positive thing I can say about the series is how well it portrays the power struggle. None of the characters are truly "good." Naturally, people involved in such schemes would harbor some level of darkness within them. I'm actually glad the series was short; enduring this much toxic masculinity for 16 episodes would have been incredibly difficult.

Important Story, Uneven Execution

With an A-list cast led by Ha Ji-won and Ju Ji-hoon, the drama dives into the dark relationship between money, celebrity, exploitation, and the entertainment industry. It touches on the kind of sinister power dynamics the world has seen repeatedly and tragically and for that alone, I think Climax deserves credit. It agitates an uncomfortable but important subject in a raw and necessary way.I

Unfortunately, where it lost me was in the actual execution.

As strong as the premise was, I found the cinematic choices weak. There were stylistic flourishes, blurred transitions, nonlinear storytelling decisions, and visual techniques that felt more distracting than effective. Instead of elevating the material, they often made the drama feel oddly amateurish and flat. It gave the impression of a director who perhaps didn’t have a full grasp on how to shape such heavy subject matter.Kudos though to the queer storylines. They added a good mix of push and pull factor but yet again, the show flails around.

The screenplay also felt tired in places. Some arcs were rushed, others underdeveloped. In particular, I thought the prosecutor’s storyline had real potential and nuance, but it never received the depth it deserved. Too much focus was placed on Ha Ji-won’s character at the expense of other compelling threads.I also felt the actors weren’t always guided properly. Ju Ji-hoon, who is usually excellent at portraying intensity and layered charisma, felt uneven here.

Because of all this, I ended up dropping the drama after the first few episodes and only tuned back in for the finale.

That said, I still think Climax is significant. Social commentary-wise, it’s aiming high. Thematically, it’s saying something important. But dramas need more than intention - they really need craft.

There was a genuinely good drama buried in here somewhere, unfortunately, it just never fully emerged.

A story about corruption at the highest levels of South Korean society, or so we're led to believe. Everyone's despicable. No one worth saving. Because the cruel world these people inhabit demands it. I would have preferred less self-indulgence, though.
In reality, it's a just decent thriller about three or four individuals, but not really about politics, neither corruption...

Unfortunately, in my opinion, there are too many ostensibly shocking choices thrown in just to brutalize the audience. And then, again and again, that same way of portraying relationships between women ; it can only be sad and end badly, nothing else is possible. To be honest, it really gets on my nerves seeing that all the time.

It's a twisted series in which all the characters behave strangely, solely to conceal plot points. Or to give Nana and Ha Ji-won their moment to shine. (They're brilliant in those scenes, of course.) But that's obvious, and it really annoys me. As a result, the ending feels like a real slog to get to. The first episode promised a daring story and I have to say : that's not the case.

Why is everyone breathing heavily or sighing non-stop ? I don't like having someone breathing down my neck for 10 episodes.

A bunch of insane psychotic people elbowing up and having a mud fight in a cesspool

This is like a study of insane psychotic people
a bunch of ppl doing whatever it takes to climb up the social/power/money ladder.... Like a huge mud fight in a cesspool.... So ugly... and without ANY character growth... the characters keep going down, instead of up...
So this is very Hwood type plot .... contrary to the principles of good storytelling ... and thus, a waste of time. NO CONTENT.

The characters start being shady... FL is a chronic liar and manipulator pushing to move on up higher.... the ML is the only one who is somewhat decent, at least his initial goals were to bring justice and revenge for his father. Nana poses with her French haircut and super thick obviously plastic lips...

And the drama keeps getting only worse
This is like a study of insane psychotic people all playing mind games as to how to step over each other. BORING.
6 episodes was enough to get the idea and DROP

The drama has some good acting but a cheap plot - and the lack of content is "made up" by shocking provocative decadent scenes, like .... grabbing an item by bare hand out of a used toilet to appease the villain, or two women making out hard.

Some people said the drama is supposedly a social commentary on what actors etc are forced to do - but that is the point, this drama shows NOBODY FORCED THEM - these ppl **** willingly chose **** to engage in very low level and criminal stuff to get status etc and climb up to the top.

THE CHARACTERS IN THIS DRAMA ARE ALL SUPER GREEDY ELBOWING UP AND THEY NEVR GROW, there is nothing noble or positive (except ML had some and lost it)

Political Noir Melodrama

I was intrigued to watch this drama since the leads, and in fact the majority of the cast are well seasoned actors. I dropped it after watching episode 1-4 as well as the final episode.

What I appreciate about this drama is the attempt made to address systemic societal issues that are not usually taken on in Kdramas, especially at the prominent level of Ha Ji Won and Jung Ji Hoon.

Elite and Institutional Capture: The drama shows how political, corporate and entertainment elites form power networks where influence flows through alliances, leverage and scandal management.

Ambition: the drama explores whether success within a corrupt system is unethical in itself, suggesting that moral compromise is a requisite in such a system.

Marriage: The protagonists' marriage is used as an instrument of power, it's transactional and politically functional with image management being the face of the marriage.

Psychological Stress and Cost of Success: Ha Ji Won's character appears to be increasingly drowning in the sense that in order to succeed, she must erase herself; in order to achieve revenge, she must become what she hates. Personal cost and moral compromise are a strong theme of the drama.

Overall this drama is very brave in its undertaking of providing a critique of elite political and corporate systems and how the apex (climax) is incompatible with integrity.

I dropped this drama because I found the execution murky and sloppy; I just couldn't enjoy the world that it creates, it's a bit dark for my taste. The story it tells, however, is quite interesting I just wish it had been told better.

I gave this a 3 out of ten for the 5 episodes I watched.

Climax or Anticlimax?

Climax is a political thriller series that started really strong and fell short by the end.

I was really intrigued with the first episodes, a couple married out of interest, he was using her to get powerful and she was doing the same and never truly cared about him, a relationship that is build entirely on interest and you are there seeing that struggle and how they go from the bottom to the top fighting the upper class.

Right in the middle of the series, the issues started to emerge, but slowly. The serie started turning into a lesbian love story, and you're there like wtf I'm watching? I don't understand the reason why the director decided to go that route when he could've just made them friends and instead gave us more struggle between the couple because we really needed that. You be in a point where that's not even the central point anymore, it started to get confusing and you don't what are you even watching.

Things got even worse by the 8th and 9th episodes and the final ep had some positives but that didn't really save the series. The meaningless side stories (like the FL love story) did lot of harm to the quality of the story, it took me out personally out of the series, i was like, let's just move and finish it already.

The reason I'm giving it a 7 and not a 5 or 4, is simple though. The series started strong as i said (at one point i was thinking it's a solid 8 or 9 series), it had all the tools to be a great series but with everything I've said and more is what really put it down. And why do we even need a season 2? (I don't know if there's a S2 but apparently we will). Why not just a normal ending?

This is very common in Korean series where we're left with so much to discover, lot of confusion just for a season 2.

So, yeah this is my personal opinion. I give it a a 8/10 (till the 6th episode) and a 6.5/10 overall.
