Not Worth the Rating

I might get some hate for this, but I don't think the drama deserves the rating it's getting, much like Dynamite Kiss. The first half of the series was genuinely strong and had me hooked, but once again, the writers seem unable to handle the latter half properly, making it increasingly difficult to watch. I'm already on episode 9, and I find myself skipping scenes just to get through it for the sake of finishing. At this point, I might end up dropping it next week because there isn't much left that keeps me invested. The early episodes were excellent and kept me glued to my seat, but the storyline simply doesn't have enough substance to justify 14 episodes. It feels like they're dragging things out unnecessarily. The drama would have been much better if everything had been wrapped up in 8 to 10 episodes.

A Royal Waste of Time: No Spark, No Heart, No Plot.

I went into My Royal Nemesis hoping for a fun, tense, and engaging fantasy-romance. Instead, I got an agonisingly hollow experience that completely squandered its highly intriguing hook. If you are reading reviews to figure out whether to pick this up, consider this a warning: stay away.

First, the romance is non-existent. For a book or show heavily relying on an "enemies-to-lovers" dynamic, there is absolutely zero romantic progression. The main characters spend half the time scowling at each other and the other half mechanically bickering. There is zero emotional buildup, no underlying tension, and absolutely zero chemistry. When they finally reach a point where they are supposedly falling in love, it feels forced and unearned. It reads more like an obligation to the genre's tropes rather than a believable connection.

Furthermore, there is no real story. The narrative is a patchwork of recycled clichés and painfully sluggish pacing. Instead of an escalating conflict or satisfying character arcs, the "plot" consists of characters endlessly going in circles. The antagonist is laughably one-dimensional and annoying, making you wonder why it takes so long to defeat them. Large chunks of the book are dedicated to repetitive internal monologues and filler scenarios that add nothing to the overarching narrative. It is a massive slog that feels like 500 pages of wasted time.

Finally, the characters lack any relatable depth. The supposed "villain" is more of an inconvenience than a threat, and our protagonists are so robotic that it is impossible to care about what happens to them. If you love a compelling story where you eagerly root for the couple, you will not find it here.

"Fun and Entertaining Joseon to Modern Day Rom com Kdrama"

My Royal Nemesis successfully revitalizes the familiar time-travel genre into a brilliantly chaotic and addictive fantasy romantic comedy.

The series thrives on a perfectly paced enemies-to-lovers trope, blending modern corporate corruption with tragic Joseon palace intrigue.

Instead of taking itself too seriously, the drama shines by leaning into self-aware humor, unhinged physical comedy, and sharp wit.

The narrative keeps viewers thoroughly hooked with strong subplots that satirise the entertainment business and explore the mysteries of reincarnation.

While it proudly relies on a compilation of classic K-drama tropes, it executes them with a playful confidence that never drags.

Lim Ji-yeon delivers a magnificent performance, She masterfully balances subtle micro-expressions of icy intensity with deep vulnerability and impeccable comedic timing.

Heo Nam-jun excels in his breakout lead role, transforming a typically cold, arrogant chaebol archetype into someone deeply multi-layered.

He displays exceptional screen presence, nailing the transitions between severe irritation and unexpected tenderness.Their fiery, combative on-screen chemistry forms the true emotional anchor that elevates the overall series Average rom-com.

Losing the plot

Somewhere, in the middle of the plot, the writers got their wires crossed, and their characters mixed up. Also, they make the crucial mistake of telling instead of showing. So that the delightfully anachronistic speech of the female lead, and the subsequent hilarity and confounding of the male lead, overall a promising start , flattens out into a drawn out slug of flashbacks to the secondary world not well explained, and a disfunctional relationships with repeated cycles of declarations of love and abandonment. Even a bit of Goblin wasteland thrown in, but with ennui rather than perseverance.. This needed some serious proofreading before making it to production.

I would rewatch just to figure out where the drama wrong.

TOXIC TROPE AND A story seen and reviewed. It can make you laugh every now and then.

My Royal Nemesis - A Beautiful
Setup Ruined by Toxic Tropes
A Promising K-Drama That Fails to Deliver What started as a highly anticipated fantasy rom-com quickly devolves into a tedious, exhausting watch. Frustrating Pacing and Wasted Premise
• Stretched Storyline: The reverse isekaiconcept of a Joseon royal waking up in modern Seoul loses its charm after just a few episodes.
· Repetitive Enmity: The clash between the leads is dragged out so excessively that the "enemies-to-lovers" dynamic turns entirely frustrating.

· Lazy Writing: Instead of developing
genuine emotional depth, the narrative
relies heavily on clichés, slow-motion
standoffs, and uninspired plot armor.
Flawed Chemistry and Stiff Delivery
• Wooden Male Lead: The performance lacksany emotional nuance, delivering the exact same facial expression and flat tone of
voice across every single episode.
· Mismatched Energy: The main characters share zero natural on-screen chemistry, making their forced romantic progression incredibly hard to swallow.
• Carried by the Heroine: While the female lead tries her absolute best to salvage the comedic timing, she cannot carry the weight of an entire uninspiring cast alone.

Toxic Tropes Overload
· Exhausting Male Lead: The "cold-hearted to the world" trope goes way too far, crossing the line from a charmingly distant chaebol into a genuinely unlikable, arrogant character.
• Outdated Romance: The show heavily
relies on toxic K-drama clichés from
decades ago, failing to offer any modern update or actual joy to the viewer.
Time-Wasting Pacing: Watching this series ultimately feels like forcing yourself through 12 hours of filler content, leaving you with nothing but regret

Excellent cast and above average plot

Not being a fan of historical romances, this one is great for those who want to have a little bit of everything: modern romance, historical romance, plot twists, cute scenes between FL and ML, among many others.
I would recommend this to someone who absolutely loves unravelling, simping, sucker for FL MLs. I think ML in this K-drama might be the best execution of that I have ever seen. I would say it is also an enjoyable watch if you love the psycho power couple dynamic, both leads are quite crazy and definitely don't act rationally (but that's the beauty of this drama I think).

What I liked: ML was just a chef's kiss, FL actually had personality development and was entertaining from start to finish, melodrama in this was quite refreshing, and the cute romance scenes which will absolutely make your day.

What I disliked: Ending wasn't as bad as I feared (meaning the end rushing wasn't that bad), but definitely the script quality got worse towards the end of the drama, the historical part of it could have been much more nuanced (I felt like it was there for the sake of having two alternate timelines), it was at times pretty boring because it got repetitive at some point.

I would say it is a better drama than most because of four reasons. 1. Excellent casting and chemistry between ML and FL. 2. Drama has a creative layout from the start. 3. It executes the romantic, heart-fluttering scenes to perfection. 4. The ending was actually bearable and good (I have been traumatised before watching this....)
Since I gave it 8 stars overall, I would definitely recommend it.

Mixed feelings

The first few episodes came in strong, great storyline, balanced comedy, and solid chemistry among the leads and supporting cast. But after the accident, it all started going downhill.

Why were they dying and resurrecting in the last episode? Omo, bored me tf out 😭. And why waste ep13 on grandma when they could’ve shown the two lovebirds having fun? This is exactly why I avoid romance plots, no unique storyline anymore. At least NamJun got his fame from this drama, and babe did well too. Definitely better than that other one she did, ‘Nice to Not Meet You.’ My first romcom this year that I actually finished to the end!!

The villain’s storyline felt poorly written, like he was just tossed in to fill scenes. He’s a great actor, but the writer didn’t tap into his strengths at all, it came off forced.

Such Potential! Sad

My Royal Nemesis has all the elements for a fantastic tale with a self-realization arc across time, but it fell flat. Characters and events unfolded as prescribed story elements rather than as character-motivated actions. The chemistry between the leads was solid, and the supporting cast performed well but were given little to do. Sad.

My Royal Nemesis ?

The story My Royal Nemesis started off really well. We have a protagonist who travels into the future and has to adapt to all the modern things. We’ve seen this kind of storyline before, but this time I found it especially enjoyable because the plot seemed really interesting.

At the beginning, Shin So-ri was written very strongly: a fearless woman who didn’t even give in when someone tried to poison her. She also had a strong sixth sense for danger, able to anticipate and avoid threats. The way she struggled to adjust to the modern world at the start was pure comedy. However, as the story progressed, her entire character changed, and by the end there were so many unanswered questions that it becomes unclear what the actual goal of the story is. This brings us to the negative points.

Shin So-ri is known for being able to sense danger in her life as a queen, yet she gets hit by a car, is knocked unconscious by sedatives in water, and is constantly monitored by her coworker—without noticing any of it? So a queen who spent years sensing danger suddenly loses her ability after saving Cha Se-gye in the car incident? She also failed to foresee all the dangers targeting Cha Se-gye, such as the knife attack.

Furthermore, Shin So-ri became weaker with every episode. At the beginning, she could fight palace guards from the past and take down several thieves in the modern world, but the further the story progressed, the more she became tearful, weak, and barely able to protect herself. That was really disappointing. I didn’t mind her emotional side, but it was unfortunately overused.

In addition, Cha Se-gye’s family was basically irrelevant throughout the entire story. The aunts barely did anything beyond a few weak attempts at minor schemes. The grandfather never took down or punished Choi Mun-do, even though he knew how terrible he was.

And then there’s Choi Mun-do himself: what was his actual purpose? He wanted to earn enough money to be a good role model for his son and give him a good life—but as a CEO, he already earns more than an average person and is already extremely wealthy in society. He had a highly paid job and strong career prospects, so why become even greedier and try to take over the company? For his stated goal, it wasn’t necessary at all. It felt like he considered himself a poor beggar, even though he was already rich. He could have taken care of his son perfectly well with his existing income while still living comfortably.

Overall, the entire family was poorly written. The antagonists were also rather weak. Even the traitor on set who sedated Shin So-ri is completely characterless, and by the end we still don’t know why she did it or what her role actually was. Cha Se-gye’s storyline—like dealing with the construction workers trying to kill him or the AI video incident—also feels unfinished.

We also never really see how the fashion and beauty division of Cha Se-gye’s company develops. In general, all characters feel underdeveloped and underused.

That said, I really liked the relationship between the two main leads—their chemistry worked very well. I also really enjoyed the dorm where Shin So-ri lived, especially her roommates and the caretaker.

However, everything I mentioned above, and especially the ending, was very disappointing. The plot itself was the strongest part of the story. We learn that Shin So-ri had already switched bodies with Kang during the car accident, and there were many opportunities to expand this storyline and properly explore the past. But the prince’s storyline was given too little attention.

I also didn’t like that time was partially reversed at the end to “fix” things, which essentially erased the version where Kang was queen. The ending felt rushed, and Choi Mun-do’s downfall was far too easy.

Overall, the series was good and entertaining, but it couldn’t fully reach its potential. Especially the last two episodes were far too fast-paced and left me with more questions than answers. I think the show was probably intended to be 16 episodes but got cut down to 14, which made the ending feel unbalanced.

Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun with the series, and I hope you enjoyed my review ^^

Royally Smitten (。♥‿♥。)

My Royal Nemesis is a fun drama with strong characters who actually grow. That's my catnip. The performances seal the deal.

Story

A double transmigration story: FL transmigrates, ML reincarnates. She's smart, he's ruthless, his slimy cousin is the obstacle, and along the way they realize life's sweeter with a partner. That's the gist, oversimplified. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Characters and Performances

This is the drama's strength: performances even more than the characters themselves, though those aren't shabby either. Im Ji Yeon and Heo Nam Jun carry the show. IJY's Sin Seo Ri is the transmigrated "demoness consort," sharp enough to navigate the modern world and build a life for herself, - spunky, resourceful, honest, easy to root for. I went from hating "Yeon Ji" to loving "Seo Ri" within minutes. The same smile that made me want to punch my screen in The Glory had me smiling right back here. That's range.

I'd seen Heo Nam Jun in When the Phone Rings and wasn't impressed. Here, though, his ruthless, possessive, borderline unhinged chaebol is the heart of the drama. His arc from "I only need success" to "I only need you" is hilarious and romantic in equal measure. Their chemistry sizzles. (And, shallow aside: the man has fine abs. 🫣)

Then there's Jang Seung Jo as Choi Mun Do- slimy, saccharine, thoroughly evil. From his first scene I wanted to punch him; the smile, the slow drawl, the fake earnestness were so well done I wished him straight to the seventh circle of hell. That's the mark of a good villain performance.

The supporting cast pulls its weight too, which is what makes this drama steady rather than wobbly. It's not just resting on its leads.

Weaknesses

The script, otherwise sharp, gets repetitive in the middle. The same push and pull, the same resolve to "live life to the fullest," Tae Hui's pursuit of Se Gye. It all loops a few too many times and drags.

Noble Idiocy

My least favorite trope, and this drama has it in spades. Both leads keep deciding things "for the other's own good" instead of just communicating, which strips away agency and signals a lack of trust. Cue repeated face palming. 🤦‍♀️

Overall

Great performances, real chemistry, romance that'll have you kicking your feet under the blanket. Yes, it sags a little in the middle and the leads commit noble idiocy like it's an Olympic sport. But the cast and writing make it worth your time anyway. Watch it.

The Yearning Was Real, The Logic Was Not

Started with a royal bang, ended with a royal shrug. The plot holes were bigger than Joseon itself — time travel with zero explanation, and a wisdom tooth surgery performed with a face mask covering the MOUTH- i.e the surgical site (as a dental professional I am filing a formal complaint). Segye woke up in a flash even though his kidneys were badly damaged due to the multiple stab wounds- Writers care to explain? ML was sweetly carrying the whole drama kingdom on his back and I did enjoy the romance… until Shin Seori's ancient accent drove me to commit the unforgivable sin of switching to English Audio. BUT. The one thing that redeemed this finale? The original Kang Dan and Grand Prince sailing away to Qing, finally free — his yearning eyes said everything the script couldn't. The writers fumbled the logic but accidentally stuck the emotional landing. 8/10, would've been a 9 if science existed in this universe.

It was good but could've been better!! Basically, the more ridiculous It got, the better it became

Long story short, Episodes 1 to 2 were a mixed bag but intriguing, Episodes 3 to 7 completely won me over, Episodes 8 to 10 had me fully invested, Episodes 11 to 12 got a little messy, and Episodes 13 to 14 (penultimate week) emotionally wrecked me!!
