Tom is a closeted gay man who lives alone in his Manila condo during the Enhanced Community Quarantine. Tom lives in fear and insecurity, choosing to cocoon himself from the world. To help him cope, he makes himself busy with his work as a freelance accountant and talking with his best friend, Gad, via video calls. Unexpectedly, Tom's long-lost college buddy from Hawaii, Kendrick, reconnects with him. Kendrick is the exact opposite of Tom, living life freely and to the fullest. Unknown to Kendrick, Tom is still secretly in love with him and hopes that their reconnection can blossom into something wonderful, albeit he cannot confess his true feelings. That is, until Kendrick admits the reason for his homecoming—a girl has broken his heart. After deciding to stay away from his friend, Tom learns that Kendrick has fallen ill with coronavirus, with no one to take care of him. Now, the cowardly Tom risks his life to visit and help Kendrick heal. With this, Tom tries to muster enough courage to finally admit to Kendrick how he feels, before it becomes too late. Reviews
A character study. I wouldn't call it a rom-com or BL.
Really good casting. The acting was strong too, especially Jameson Blake. Natural and realistic dialogue. This movie is not giving fan service, romance, or comedy, so you'll be disappointed if that's your main interest. It's a super-angsty character study throughout, making it often hard to watch and frustrating. That's just the nature of a story about a risk-averse and repressed main character. I could relate. Actually hit very close to home for me. Anyone in an asynchronous relationship feels foolish and wonders at some point whether they are being used. And who hasn't been ghosted? Many are saying now that they are tired of lockdown stories and characters communicating exclusively through video and texts, and I get that. This is not groundbreaking work, but it is effective, touching, and believable. This was my first time seeing a fairly bad COVID case portrayed to any real extent. This seemed to get it right, except in real life the recovery wouldn't be quick or as complete, I think. This movie was definitely worth watching and maybe a rewatch as well. The song at the end ("Still") wasn't written for the movie but it fits perfectly and it's just a really good song and performance.pandemic slice of life/BL
Overall: this is one of the slew of BL series (I.e. Gameboys, Quaranthings, See You After Quarantine, Boys' Lockdown) set during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to others, it has an angstier more realistic vibe. First watched with an iWantTFC subscription and re-watched when it released on GagaOOLala in 2024 https://www.gagaoolala.com/en/videos/4287/my-lockdown-romance-2020What I Liked
- the supportive friend who was not a cliche female character
- supportive parents and how the dad said to not promise him grandkids but that the lead character would be safe and happy
- tech integrated fairly well
Room For Improvement
- why did he do the sales pitch, his character actions confused me at times
- odd that he didn't delete the post right away
- maybe because the actors weren't in person with each other, but the ending felt anti climactic
