Okay. THIS is the episode where I started seeing the relationship between Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu differently. ❤️
Not because they suddenly fell madly in love. They didn't.
In fact, one of the things I appreciate most about Key to the Phoenix Heart is that the drama doesn't rush their relationship just because they're already married. Instead, it lets their connection develop through something much more meaningful first:
trust.
And Episode 9 is another important step in that progression.
❤️ XIAO WUYI AND XIE JIAYU: TRUST COMES FIRST
At this point, their marriage is still technically the result of circumstances and political arrangements. Jiayu entered this marriage with feelings for Li Mao, while Xiao Wuyi obviously has his own reasons for accepting the situation.
So they aren't starting from the usual romance-drama position where two people are immediately attracted to each other.
They're starting as two people who are basically strangers being forced into a relationship.
And yet, episode by episode, something unexpected happens.
They become comfortable with each other.
More importantly, they become people who can depend on one another.
That's what makes their romance much more satisfying to watch.
Xiao Wuyi is someone who is extremely guarded. He doesn't easily reveal weakness, especially because his reputation as the ruthless and almost invincible commander of the Beifu Army is part of the protection surrounding him.
But Jiayu is gradually becoming someone who sees beyond that reputation.
She doesn't simply see the terrifying general everyone else talks about.
She sees the man underneath.
And I love that the drama doesn't make her fall for him simply because he's handsome, powerful, or protective.
She gets to know him first.
She sees his personality.
She sees his kindness.
She sees his vulnerability.
She sees the contradictions between the man people believe he is and the man he actually is.
And that makes her eventual feelings much more believable.
🩹 XIAO WUYI'S BLINDNESS MAKES HIS CHARACTER EVEN MORE VULNERABLE
One of the most important elements surrounding Xiao Wuyi in these episodes is his recurring problem with his eyesight.
This is particularly significant because Wuyi's entire identity is built around being someone who is capable.
He's a military commander.
He's a strategist.
He's someone people depend on.
He's someone who is expected to be able to handle almost any situation.
So losing his vision isn't merely a physical inconvenience.
It takes away one of the things he relies on most:
control.
And this is where Jiayu becomes increasingly important.
She isn't just another person worrying about him.
She's learning how to understand his condition and how to work around it.
The relationship begins to develop through these small acts of cooperation rather than through grand romantic declarations.
And honestly?
I prefer this.
Because when romance eventually comes, we'll know exactly why they fell in love.
It wasn't because the script suddenly told us they were soulmates.
It was because they had already become partners long before they admitted they had become emotionally attached.
🥹 JIAYU ISN'T JUST "THE GIRL HE PROTECTS"
Another thing I really appreciate about Jiayu is that she isn't written as a helpless female lead who exists mainly to be rescued by the male lead.
She is clever.
She is curious.
She has her own talents.
She can think for herself.
And most importantly, she is capable of contributing something meaningful to Wuyi's life.
This becomes particularly important because Wuyi is used to being the protector.
But with Jiayu, the dynamic slowly starts becoming mutual.
He protects her.
She takes care of him.
He helps her navigate dangers she isn't prepared for.
She becomes someone who can support him when he is the vulnerable one.
That balance is one of the reasons their chemistry works so well for me.
🧠 XIAO WUYI: THE "RUTHLESS" GENERAL IS STARTING TO CRACK
Hou Minghao's portrayal of Xiao Wuyi continues to be one of the biggest strengths of the drama.
Because Wuyi isn't actually emotionless.
He's simply extremely controlled.
There's a difference.
He doesn't need to constantly shout or cry to show what he's feeling.
A look is often enough.
And when he's around Jiayu, those little cracks in his composure become much more obvious.
He can tease her.
He can be playful.
He can deliberately provoke her.
He can become visibly jealous.
And sometimes he behaves almost like a completely different person compared to the terrifying general everyone else knows.
That's why I love the contrast.
To the outside world: Xiao Wuyi is a dangerous and calculating commander.
To Jiayu: he's gradually becoming just Xiao Wuyi.
And that distinction becomes extremely important for their romance.
😂 JIAYU STILL HAS NO IDEA WHAT'S HAPPENING
And this is where Jiayu makes me laugh.
Because Wuyi is already becoming increasingly obvious, while Jiayu is still processing everything through the logic of:
"We're just getting along because we're married."
Girl. 😭
Meanwhile, the audience is already sitting here watching the chemistry develop.
This is also why I don't consider their romance rushed.
Jiayu hasn't suddenly forgotten Li Mao.
Her emotional transition takes time.
She has known Li Mao for years.
Her feelings for him weren't fake.
But what she has with Wuyi is something completely different.
With Li Mao, her feelings are based heavily on their history and familiarity.
With Wuyi, she is discovering someone she never expected to understand.
And that's what makes her eventual realization more meaningful.
She doesn't simply stop loving one person and start loving another.
She gradually discovers what kind of love actually fits her.
⚔️ THE POLITICAL STORY NEVER STOPS
Another thing I appreciate about Episode 9 is that the drama doesn't suddenly become a pure romance.
There is still political maneuvering happening around them.
The conflict involving the royal families, the different factions, and the larger mystery surrounding the Phoenix Heart tokens continues to build.
And this is one of the reasons the 28-episode structure works so well.
There isn't much room for pointless filler.
Almost every episode is either:
• advancing the political conflict,
• revealing information,
• developing a character,
• strengthening a relationship,
• or setting up something that will become important later.
Even seemingly small details can eventually become relevant.
And at this point in the story, I still don't know who I can completely trust. 😂
That's exactly how a political historical drama should feel.
🐦 THE PHOENIX HEART MYSTERY
The Phoenix Heart storyline continues to make the political conflict much bigger than simply a dispute between individual characters.
Everyone seems to have their own reason for wanting the tokens.
Some want power.
Some want revenge.
Some want to uncover the truth.
Some want to control the political future of the kingdom.
And because different characters don't necessarily want the same thing, alliances are constantly shifting.
This is also why I don't think the drama should be watched casually.
There are too many names, factions, histories, and hidden motivations.
You really have to pay attention.
But that's part of the fun.
Every time I think:
"Okay, now I understand who's against whom."
The drama basically goes:
"Are you sure?" 😂
💕 THE ROMANCE IS DEVELOPING WITHOUT NEEDING A CONFESSION
This is probably my biggest takeaway from Episode 9.
Xiao Wuyi and Jiayu still haven't reached the point where they openly acknowledge what they're feeling.
But their relationship has already changed.
They're no longer simply husband and wife because of circumstances.
They're becoming partners.
And partnership is actually the foundation of their romance.
They are learning how to:
trust → understand → protect → rely on → care for each other.
Only after that does love naturally follow.
That's why Episode 10 is going to hit differently.
Because the upcoming red-ribbon blindfold scene isn't just a cute romantic moment.
It's the payoff to everything the drama has been quietly establishing.
Jiayu doesn't suddenly become his eyes out of nowhere.
The foundation has already been built.

THIS is the scene I've been waiting for. 😂❤️
The horseback archery competition is going to become one of the defining moments of their relationship.
Because Wuyi's condition puts him in a position where he literally has to trust someone else.

She becomes his eyes.
And the symbolism is honestly beautiful.

But now?
They're beginning to choose each other in small ways.
That's what makes the development satisfying.

Episode 9 isn't necessarily the most explosive episode of the drama.
But emotionally, I think it's one of the more important ones.

And that's especially meaningful for Wuyi.
He carries enormous responsibilities.
He has enemies everywhere.
His health is becoming increasingly concerning.

But somehow, this clever, chaotic, stubborn girl slowly becomes someone he can let his guard down around.
And Jiayu?
She's slowly beginning to realize that the man she was initially afraid of isn't the man she thought he was.
She hasn't completely crossed that emotional line yet.
But she's getting there.
Very slowly.
And honestly, I wouldn't want it any other way.
Because the best thing about this romance is that the drama makes us watch them become partners before they become lovers.

Episode starts with WuYi landing hard and head hitting brick from target. Fortunately the blindness was temporary. JiaYu’s stories of the handsome Mao just thrilled him to tears.🤣😂😝she is concerned for his well being but has no concern of his feelings nor considers them a couple. He bears this in mind with the promise he has made to her mother. His mother visits with medicine but still won’t talk to him. JiaYu tries to convince her to visit and when that fails asks to be taught how to make chicken soup. They argue about her prying into his family affairs and she later explains what happened in context. I like that Mao got to be on the receiving end with how excellent his friend choices are and that she will make every effort to protect WuYi who is a pillar for the people. Interesting how similar the friends’ pouty faces are. 🤣😂 The northern general is doing his best to be as insufferable as possible. He brings a lame hound as a gift for WuYi’s brother. Tho angry he let the general know that one never knows when they can assist in the battlefield. I would have that dog trained to that general’sscent to bite him in the arse before the competition. All’s fair and all that. After his visit there, the general grabs Mao to visit WuYi. Somehow he already knows of WuYi’s injury and testing to see to what degree. His sadistic tale of using slaves for target practice or in the front lines if survived that. 🤬 There was great satisfaction for me when WuYi took his arrow and splintered that bastard’s tossed one at the dancer. His brother learns that WuYi wanted him back in the saddle and his mom was the obstacle. The idiot went out and got drunk instead of trying out the stirrups and practicing. It is interesting that JiaYu trusted WuYi enough to reveal her orphaned status. She even describes in great detail the one who killed her parents. She also has this dreadful habit of ruining the few nice things she says to him with a zinger at the end that completely unravels the pleasant sentiment. She still has every intention of taking off with Mao once the contest is over. I enjoyed his quip about the north sending a princess to them. The northern general wasn’t expecting the onus to be from his side. It also clarified to JiaYu and Mao that he had no intention of selling out the sister for some political alliance strategy. At the end of the episode we see the man that agreed to make JiaYu his apprentice. He does not appreciate being the backup plan but will work for liquor. 😝WuYi is truly a masochist with all the Mao stuff thrown in his face and the resentment from his brother when he wasn’t the cause. I respect that he looks out for her best interest and is even providing a mentor to help her skills improve. Both curious and fearful to see the contest and whatever stunts that depraved general brings to the table.

This episode worked perfectly as a bridge for Jiayu to learn more about her husband and see him more like a friend now, rather than an enemy. 🤗The way they get mad at each other already shows how much they actually care for each other, yet they don't want to admit it — or maybe in her case, she doesn't even realise it yet. 😌 But her helping him hide his blindness was all I needed — deceptive together against everyone else... Beautiful! ❤️And why did she tell Mao about Wuyi's blindness? I am not sure if that was smart — best friend or not. Wuyi said no one should know, so I'm not sure if he would want Mao to know... 🤨 I hope this won't bite them back when Mao sees Jiayu falling for Wuyi. I hope Mao stays a true friend to Wuyi till the end, but we all know how everything can turn out when someone can't get what they want. 😟 Also, I think Mao was actually already a little bit jealous when he heard Wuyi had stayed the night with his second consort. And maybe that's the reason why he asked Jiayu if she doesn't hate Wuyi anymore? 🤔In this episode, the pace disappointed me a little bit, because I would have loved to see a more detailed shift between some events. Some characters were realising or learning things offscreen, without even showing us all the information that made them connect the dots. But I guess that's because the focus was mostly on our main characters and how they grew closer. 😔And, hey, she told Wuyi she was an orphan and she remembers Northern Qin men killing her parents... I really want to know who her parents were and if they were anyone of high status? 😩
