This was a mess, but entertaining....

Wow what a season. And many did not like it, as I saw in the other reviews 🤣.

I'm not fazed with a messy season and this season was really messy. First it was a second shoot. The already had the season filmed three months or so before but one contestant - we don't know yet who - did something bad - we still don't know what happend - at least I do not. So they recast some contestants and re-shoot the whole thing again.

Then they put the happy couple of the first shoot in this show and they broke up before because one did not want to reshoot and the other one wanted to because of "outing". But even the one not wanting it appaered anyways.

Yeah and about half the episodes this was the central focus of the show... the messy after breakup process. One who already closed this part of his live and the other one still clinging on... Messy is not the right word for everything, it was also really intense.

At least we did get two couples out of "it". So not all was lost and not all was bad. It's quite impressive they did also 15 episodes as "The Boyfriend S2" which took place over two months(!) - the last episode is double the length.

I think that one week is not enough time to really do such a show, it should be a least two weeks. On the other hand most of them had two weeks, but not all of them. Also a point which I do not like is the removal of contestants by vote. I don't know, but I felt that was too much. The people participating are under enormous mental pressure as it is, to add this extra pressure was not a sensible choice. I would also not have put the breakup couple up again, because it was predictable that this would be messy and move the focus off from the other cast. I also felt there were fewer dates than before and the yoga date was not something fitting korean (and in this case japanese) personalities which are more reserved and shy then elsewhere which made the whole date akward. And of course what I really did not like was the removal of the iconic phone booth. If they invest a ton of money for the show, they could have placed a phone booth there too.

While it was messy, some people did grow their personality and found more understanding of themselves which is a good thing. Regardless of the tensions between the ex-es and the clumsy attempts by some I felt entertained.

Sinking Ships but not a Sinking Show

Note about overall rating: For comparison, I also gave an 8.5/10 to Season 3.

Ahhh. His Man. The love/painful relationship we have.

You make me get attached and see promise in couples, only for any and all I root for with my whole heart to never work out. All my ships sink . . .

*sigh*

C'est la vie.

Again, I should be used to it by now. I think I am the iceberg to these Titanics.

But, at the end of the day, these are real people with real feelings and free will. No one can be made to like/love anyone. And, for those who do work out, I am genuinely happy for them, including those from this season. One couple, in particular, I didn't expect to be so natural and sweet, but really saw hope for a long-lasting relationship in the end.

As for the different choices made in the production side this season, I have mixed thoughts.

Obviously, re-shooting an entire season with only a few new people isn't ideal. But circumstances made it this way and I understand why they'd ask everyone else to come back to film again and did find value in people perhaps being braver/taking a second look at someone or even approaching a newcomer.

The diaries were another thoughtful addition that encouraged self-reflection for the contestants. I thought it was also a nice way to wrap up evenings and track dates/the progression of feelings.

And taking time at the end of the show for everyone to voice their thoughts on their time on His Man S4, even after making their final selections/finding out if they were mutually chosen, felt like a great way to carve out space for those who didn't end up with a partner. After all, their experience matters, too. Especially when S3 failed to follow up with everyone.

Eliminations, though? Believe it or not, I can see both sides of it.

Eliminating someone from a dating show for being closed-off/not interested in anyone does make sense; it removes those who aren't truly participating, frees up airtime for others, and encourages contestants to be more proactive in pursuing those they're interested in.

On the other hand, eliminations do ultimately hurt the feelings of the contestants who are eliminated (even if only temporarily) and take away the chance for them to break through someone's walls and reach their heart by the end. It also sends shockwaves through the house, putting people on edge.

I didn't want to see anyone be eliminated. But I could see why they introduced this new, controversial element to the show.

All in all, I still adore His Man and the journey it's taken me on (4 years now! Crazy!), and I hope we get yet another season.

A disappointing reshoot

In reality shows, viewers generally accept a degree of scripting—reshoots, edited narratives, and moments shaped by producers. However, this season of His Man may be the most underwhelming and artificial yet.

The season begins with an awkward meeting at a café before it becomes clear—and is later explained—that most of the cast had actually already filmed together previously. Due to a problematic participant, the original footage could not air, and the cast were offered the opportunity to return for a reshoot. While this is understandable, the audience never saw anything from that initial filming. As a result, the cast returned with a week of shared history already behind them. Friend groups were already formed, previous encounters were hinted at, and the natural, wholesome atmosphere that His Man is known for never quite materialised.

To complicate matters further, two new cast members were added to balance the numbers. Unfortunately, they were given almost no backstory until halfway through the season, leaving them at a disadvantage from the start. Midway through the show, an elimination vote removed two cast member, and prior to that a participant from the second season was brought back for another chance.

By the end, the final couples felt predictable and unremarkable. Ironically, the real highlights of the season were the two new cast members, who approached the experience with sincerity. Although neither left with a romantic partner, they gained something arguably just as meaningful: a supportive new fandom.

If the show moves forward with a fifth season, I would strongly urge the producers to avoid eliminations and to provide clear context if a reshoot situation arises again—especially for any new cast members joining the show. Without that transparency, the viewing experience becomes uncomfortable and ultimately disappointing.

Yeah I can't do anymore. Dropping at episode 10.

Yeah I can't do anymore. Dropping at episode 10. I tried to watch for the love of the game but production really did a mad stinker here. The music to make scenes feel like something it wasnt? They were also creating deep story lines for something that was shallow. Then using pairs for promotion just rubbed me the wrong way. I liked it at the beginning but they lost their way. Almost like they only planned the first 5 episodes and a clueless person took charge after episode 5. Su Min continuing to sleep alone too?

I truly didn't mind the reshoot thing and I still don't. For a group who "knew each other" they really were super awkward. It's working for MS and HG but because its not for YJ people are blaming the reshoot. I truly feel YJ would have performed the same even if it wasn't. They should have given new comers the advantages like they did for Min Seong. Put certain limitations, again that card play by Sun Wook was out of bonds.

The cast was really bad, no one here was TV ready. They all just killed the mood completely, having boring laid back personalities. "I wanna sleep/I wanna go home" Some's up the energy.

Nevím jestli budu mít sílu to dokoukat!

As a long-time viewer of His Man, I feel the need to share my disappointment with the current season. A show I once admired for its honesty now feels very different in tone and structure.
The elimination rule changes the essence of the show. A dating show should focus on emotional growth and genuine connection, not pressure and fear of being sent home. The elimination ruined the atmosphere and relationship between Jae-ho and Hyeog-jun. It was clear that they still loved each other, but they didn't get a chance.
This season feels rushed and tense instead of natural and honest. I don't know if I'll have the energy to finish it!
If you're planning a fifth season, I sincerely hope you reconsider the format. Many viewers are disappointed, and I'm afraid that continuing in this direction may cause even more fans to stop watching the show.

Fake fake fake

I don't like to write long and wide but...no one can convince me that Hyeon Jun and Sun Wook didn't stay in touch after that first shoot. The first thing is that Sun Wook had a crush on Hyeon Jun in the first filming, but apparently they didn't end up as a couple. Then suddenly, magically, after a few months, when the new recording started, both of them were immediately super interested blah blah blah...WTF what happened to Hyeon Jun between the two filmings? When did they find out that there will be a new recording??? It is obvious that at least a couple of months passed between the two filmings, because the incident with that person from the first filming happened after they finished filming.
As for the new participants, they were the only ones who felt sincere, even though they were literally deceived by the other participants and the production in the beginning.
Min Sung and Hyeong Jun... there was something very unpleasant there, even though they "clicked" it still didn't seem sincere. Ok Hyeong Jun you are hurt but...after crying so much about Jaeha you fell in love after two days???? After the first shoot, Jaeha and Hyeong Jun were in a relationship, they created stronger emotions...if I understand correctly, they didn't offer them a new shoot two days after they became a couple, so something doesn't feel right...Although, I might be wrong, but what if I'm right, then someone's feelings for someone aren't sincere...
Taichi should have skipped this second shoot, ok he needs some promotion but...he didn't show any sincere emotions except for that date on the beach...
Eum Hyeok Jin- first shoot and Su Min (who was obviously uncomfortable at first when he saw the blonde again) second shoot Han Gyeol...when you're an open book, when there's not even a little mystery and when everything is staged, people can quickly lose interest...although Eum Hyeok Jin managed to cool down everything that happened in the end and smooth everything over with Su Min. I'm happy for him.
All in all, the production was terrible, maybe they should have played one episode briefly about what happened in that first recording, maybe they should have told the new participants some information. And the stupidest decision was the elimination, whoever thought of that in a reality show where relationships are supposed to be formed should be fired immediately.
And the conclusion: I'm proud of Yun Jae for staying true to himself until the end. Terrible editing, false hope, false attempts on the part of some participants, he managed to push through all of that with dignity. I wish he and Jaeha had met under different circumstances...

Mixed feelings

I like the show His man, but they made a mess out of it this season. I really don't like how they handled things. Bringing in newcomers into the already existing group wasn't a good idea in my opinion and the elimination of 2 members was an even worse idea. That was so unfair!!
I especially feel sorry for Jun Yae and Jae Ha, but Lee Hyeok Jin didn't deserve it either.
And one week is just too short to get to know each other well and give all of them a chance to get to know more people.

The visuals and music were very good.

I don't think i will rewatch this, because a lot that happened left a bitter aftertaste in my mind.

WORST PRODUCTION

Let me ask one thing, if you put into a circle that the people actually have known each other what do you feel? Awkward, no idea to talk about then much worse, feeling like outsider.
It's not fair at all!!!
That's this show it's all about. Terrible. Fix your production.......................................

absolute crap - makes me want to be done with this show altogether

what was the damn point of putting us through emotional turmoil, crying for 3 weeks in a row for them, only to ELIMINATE one of them. we get absolutely NO closure. I’m so livid. since when was an elimination EVER needed? this is a dating show to find love, not a GAME SHOW. we shouldn’t be eliminating people who are ACTUALLY there to find love. so many of the people only do it for the attention to get into acting or whatever, when someone so clearly wants to be with someone else, elimating them is doing the exact opposite of what this show is supposed to be about. I am so freaking done with this show. I thought S3 was bad, this was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I don’t think I can go through another season of this.

it was not entertaining at all.

it felt like it was scripted. the fact that there was a previous shoot and we were told we never saw it was just icing on the cake. that part was very confusing, and bringing back an already existing couple while one was eliminated was utterly ridiculous. by eliminating one person, they ruined the fateful situation they wanted.
i also hated how they acted like nothing was happening between that couple who everyone hated -hj and sw- and how they played with two people's feelings. it was a terrible season. for the first time, i hated most of the people in the season because we never understood what was going on behind the scenes.
i didn't enjoy watching it at all. i was hoping for some surprising decisions, but that wasn't the case at all. all I gained from watching it was stress. it wasn't nice that this show, which was so good in the first two seasons, went downhill.
