Pearl in Red (2026)

Watch for the characters

If you have seen tons of dailys, then this is more of a boardroom drama in terms of revenge. There aren't a lot of surprise twists and clever revenge shenanigans. However, it was engaging especially in the second half.

So what worked:
1. Acting -- Even the characters that seemed boring grew on me. They became a nice foil to the melodramatic characters and that contrast worked well. Everyone seemed to have a good read on what their characters were meant to do.

2. Villains -- The actors playing the villains really seemed to be having the most fun in the drama. They were complex characterizations and motivations. They happily back stabbed when needed but they also seemed to want love, loyalty, adoration and power. So they weren't one note characters and it was fun to watch.

3. Unexpected stand out -- Usually the second male lead has nothing better to do than cling to the female lead. Here, HyunJun was given so much more. One secret after another toppled out dismantling his sense of self. He had to figure out his sense of worth and how to hold his head up high despite the baggage of his family. The actor playing HyunJun really had the acting chops to deliver the emotional notes and the scenes were engaging.

4. Characterization -- Even the side characters were fully defined. Usually dailys don't tell us about the butlers, drivers and cooks. We don't know what drives them or what they are like. Here, even the minor characters had fully fleshed out details that made them more than just props. Everyone was motivated by something and no one was willing to sacrifice themselves randomly.

5. Wardrobe -- All of the female characters had distinct dressing style and it was fun to watch the different clothes. I rather liked the wide selection. The men were so-so with their suits.

6. Direction-- I liked that the director did some key scenes with just silence as the background instead of putting on music. So that added emotional weight and made it more dramatic. The lighting was good and we didn't have to squint. While the sets were used, there was enough variety in each episode that you didn't feel like you were watching the entire drama in the same background.

7. Pacing -- Usually I am not curious about the next episode but in this drama, I was. That has been quite a while since I looked forward to a daily. I didn't feel like the plot was going around in circles and hashing the same thing over and over again. Instead, there were reveals that naturally steered into a new arc. There were some great emotional confrontations from different characters.

To sum it up, it was engaging as a character drama more than a revenge drama. However, it worked as it showed that revenge is sometimes more of a team effort, timing and life's unexpected twists. Every character had a role to play in this revenge drama even if their contribution wasn't clever. So the drama felt very cohesive. So I give it above average rating.
