Blue Is Okay

The truth: Blue Lips could have been much better than what this was. Ai, terrible singing, slow slow plot, too short eps, sub par acting sometimes, ages, inconsistencies with the blue hair, their voices etc. There was alot that stuck out. It was on a tight budget and it showed.

Also truth: The way Teng Mo looked at Xian and vice versa made their love story believable. I appreciated the no nonsense way Xian spoke to Teng Mo. Their last nc scene was a stretch but still there was something tangible between them. A level of comfort when they were together in the later eps that created the 'real couple' feel. When the sister was dying, I did get emotional. When Teng Mo put the ring on his finger I was grinning. So there was something that kept me looking. I'd have to say it was the earnestness of their love story and not the performance. I also liked that Teng Mo always seemed to be smiling.

While Lin Yu had the easier role, Shao Yun seemed to feel comfortable at the end. Probably removing the blue hair gave him a more believable aura. He certainly didn't pass for 20 and the other couldn't pass for 30 though according to mdl he is. He seemed more like a sibling to his mother than a son. There was an older man vibe to him. Teng Mo scared at the end and Xian speaking clearly was a nice scene.

If there is a compilation as one movie, I'd probably watch it again.

Underrated CBL Dark horse with excellent Leads Acting & Chemistry, but with Production issues.

Subjective Gut Rating: 8.25

I believe “Blue Lips” is the underrated darkhorse this year amongst a sea of Chinese BLs. It was a short web series (20-min episode) that had to compete with other more popular BLs. This drama is obviously very low budget, as most of my criticisms are targeted at the production quality.

Let’s start with the obvious and one of the main reasons people are not watching “Blue Lips” - the frequent use of AI generated images and scenes. If you oppose using AI, please do not attempt to watch this drama. You will be completely upset and frustrated. But if you are like me, who generally are OK with the use of AI during transition scenes and images only, and especially for a low budget production, then I recommend this drama. I don’t want to turn this into a debate. But AI is a big deal in China and it’s not going away and we will only see more. But as viewers and consumers, we have the right to not support such productions. Because CBLs have a hard time already, and need to jump through hoops to avoid censorship and be produced overseas, I am more lenient in this regard, especially for low-budget CBLs. “Blue Lips” is still acted by real people and written and adapted by real people.

I’ll continue with the criticisms. The dubbing for the actors is not good. The dubbed over singing is even worse. I am sorry, who decides it’s a good idea to poorly dubbed over Wu Shi Xian’s singing and sometimes with songs unrelated or changed all of a sudden? The songs themselves are actually great (and a couple songs are sung by Wei Lin Yu) and I even enjoy the punk rock/heavy metal songs at the bar. But the editing, the background music, and the use of music in general is the one of my main criticisms. The transition scenes are choppy (whether they use AI-generated scenes or not).

The ending also isn’t very satisfactory. I am not sure if they are planning for a season 2, or if they ever will have enough funds for another season. A somewhat major plotline about one of the leads is not resolved. While waiting for the last 3 episodes, I was curious how the drama is going to close out on 2 major plot points. In the end, they left one of them as a somewhat to-be-continued…..or never-to-be-continued.

Now, why am I still giving this a pretty high rating? Because I LOVE the two main leads. I LOVE them as actors, and as characters. I cannot believe this is Wei Lin Yu and Lan Shao Yun’s first acting gig. I tried to search for their info but came up empty-ended. This can’t be their first time acting right? They are just too good!!! As characters, the older Teng Mo is funny, sexy, broken and also very mature. The younger Shi Xian’s early thorny and prickly exterior is attractive and inviting in a way. His vulnerability in the later episodes make me want to wrap him in a big bear hug and protect him at all cost. No wonder Teng Mo can’t help but fall in love with him despite a 9-year age gap. They both have so much chemistry together. From the early bickering, teasing and fighting, to the later attraction, controlled feelings and undisclosed facts and secrets, both actors did a fabulous job. Their relationship develops at a really good pace with enough comedy, sexual tension, controlled emotions, angst and honesty. Those episodes when the two of them are trying to protect themselves, withholding information yet all done in a noble-idiotic way, I was more moved than frustrated. Instead of saying they miscommunicated, maybe they just decided not to communicate. But once they do, it’s all honesty and support for one and another.

Speaking of comedy, episodes 2 & 3 are hilarious! The umbrella scene will forever be an iconic moment. Teng Mo’s parents in episode 8 are just as funny. You can see why Teng Mo is Teng Mo, because he grows up in such a fun and loving family.

The supporting characters are fine. I can’t decide if the sister’s acting is emotionless, or her character should be acted that way. The sister definitely acts and looks very sickly. Brother Hao is an interesting character. I wanted to see more of him and I am so happy the direction the story has for him. I really don’t need a love triangle or love square.

Without any expectations, “Blue Lips” captures my heart because of the story of Teng Mo and Wu Shi Xian. As a romance-lover, I enjoy their story, their interaction, their chemistry, kisses (for the most part) and intimate scenes. I enjoy how they push-and-pull and their heartfelt conversations. I was rooting for them from beginning to the end. I just wish the drama had more funding to fix a lot of the production issues. And I wish the episodes were longer so that they can better allocate time to give “Blue Lips” a proper and deserved ending. I am giving "Blue Lips" a somewhat high 8.25-8.5 rating despite all my criticisms, since it's a low-budget production.

Very low budget, AI & bad dubbing...

This could have been one of the best CBLs ever, but they botched it. While AI plays a big role in China, it also plays a role in this show. It's not that bad, at least we have real people doing a real series. The biggest complaint is the dubbing, which is really bad and even worse is the singing-dubbing which often has nothing to do with the song you hear. The songs itself are all excellent.

It begins like an ordinary BL but that is only half the story. What seems 08/15 is something completely different. The title and the main characters blue lips will make sense further through the story. This is one of the series which will get better with every episode and you will gradually understand what's going on.

I really wish chinese productions would not dub at all. First they are produced for the international market anyways and not shown officially in China and second I will not recognize any chinese dialect anyways. At least I can hear differences between cantonese and mandarin :) The show grew on me the further it went and it's for sure not a bad watch, when you can ignore some of the AI and the dubbing. For a low budget production, they did a good job.

Viagra, Blue Lips and Unexpected Romance: Another Underrated Chinese BL, Another Massive Hit!

Another Chinese BL, another hit! After finishing all 16 episodes, I can confidently say this one was something really special. Every 20 minute episode flew by, and every time an episode ended, I immediately wanted more. It completely exceeded my expectations, and once again, Chinese BLs have proven that they know exactly how to pull me in.

Blue Lips brings something fresh to the genre, perfectly mixing comedy, romance, emotional depth, beautiful visuals, and sizzling chemistry into a story that had me hooked from the very first episode.

Teng Mo is a former top lawyer who walks away from his career after a traumatic case leaves him haunted by guilt and recurring nightmares. Looking for a fresh start, he opens an adult shop, where one particular customer keeps catching his attention. That customer is Xiao Wu, a bar singer with striking blue eyes and blue lips who regularly comes in to buy Viagra. Teng Mo quickly becomes curious about him, only to discover that there is so much more to Xiao Wu than meets the eye.

Their relationship starts with constant teasing, annoyance, and hilarious misunderstandings, especially when Teng Mo keeps requesting the weirdest songs at the Blue Moon bar where Xiao Wu performs. Watching them slowly go from enemies to lovers feels surprisingly natural and incredibly entertaining.

The comedy in this series is absolutely brilliant. One scene had me laughing so hard when Teng Mo gave Xiao Wu Viagra and he actually took it. When Xiao Wu desperately needed relief, Teng Mo showed up wearing a full raincoat and carrying an umbrella because he thought things were about to get messy. The entire sequence was completely ridiculous in the best possible way and perfectly captured the chaotic chemistry between these two.

And then came the bathroom scene. WOW. The chemistry between them was incredible, and the kissing, tension, and way the scene was filmed felt so passionate and natural. Even though they had only known each other for a short time, they looked like two people who had already been in love for years. That scene alone completely sold me on this couple.

As the story develops, we also learn more about Shi Xian and his sister, and honestly, their story completely broke my heart.
They lost both of their parents and were left with nothing but each other. His sister had to grow up far too quickly, becoming responsible for raising and protecting her younger brother. Even when she became seriously ill, she hid it from her employer because she was terrified of losing her job. She kept forcing herself to work and putting her own health aside because Shi Xian depended on her.

Eventually, her body could no longer keep up. She ended up in hospital needing expensive treatment and surgery. Just when you think things cannot possibly get worse, Shi Xian is forced to drop out of school and start working at bars, drinking with customers just to earn enough money to pay for his sister's medical bills.

They have already lost their parents, their home, their sense of security, and now even their chance at a normal life. All they have left is each other, which makes their situation even more heartbreaking. You can genuinely feel how desperately they are trying to hold on while life continues to take everything away from them.

Thankfully, even in the darkest moments, there is still a little light. Teng Mo enters their lives when they need someone the most. He does not just use his financial resources to help with her treatment. He also gives them emotional support and makes them feel like they are no longer facing everything alone.

And that ending scene in the sauna was so beautiful. Shi Xian said he never thought he had a family, but Teng Mo held his hand and told him, “From now on, my parents are your parents, and my home is your home.”
So sweet 🥹 What a beautiful series. I’m so glad we got a happy ending!

My only criticism is that some of Xiao Wu's singing scenes looked like obvious lip syncing. There were also a few scenes where the use of AI generated visuals was noticeable and took away from the overall visual experience. Because of that, I would not describe the cinematography as one of the series' strengths, despite there being some visually beautiful moments. These issues did not ruin my enjoyment, but they were noticeable enough for me to take off a point.

Overall, I absolutely loved this series. It gave me almost everything I want from a BL. Romance, comedy, emotional storytelling, memorable characters, and incredible chemistry between the leads. I laughed, I cried, I got emotionally invested, and there were definitely moments where my heart was hurting for these characters.

Blue Lips completely surprised me, and I am so glad I watched it. If you love Chinese BLs with a good mix of romance, emotional drama, memorable characters, and electric chemistry, this should definitely be on your watch list.

An Okay drama

Blue Lips was an enjoyable watch with a pretty interesting premise. The Vandagon mystery in particular gave the story enough of a hook to keep me curious about what was actually going on.

I also liked both male leads individually because they genuinely felt like they had lives outside of their relationship. Shixian especially always seemed to have something going on, which made him feel like a character rather than someone who only existed for the romance.

The chemistry between the leads was probably one of my favorite things about the drama. I'd give it an 8/10. Their scenes together didn't feel overly awkward, and I actually found myself looking forward to seeing them interact. The romance itself was nice too. There was some reliance on the classic miscommunication trope for relationship conflict, but thankfully, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of their relationship.

The acting, however, was just okay. Nothing particularly stood out to me, and there were moments where the emotional delivery felt a little lacking. Still, there weren't any characters I particularly disliked, so the drama remained an easy enough watch.

The first arc was definitely what stood out the most to me. I was genuinely curious about why Shixian wore blue lipstick and, more importantly, why Teng Mo was running an adult toy shop when he was clearly affluent. Those little mysteries made me want to keep watching and figure things out.

As for the ending, it was predictable enough. The sister's death happened pretty much as expected, and the two leads eventually ended up together. Nothing was particularly wrong with it, but it also wasn't an ending that left much of an impression.

Lukewarm praise aside. THE DUBBING GOT ON MY Nerves. The AI music or smtg that was on ep 1, the singing that felt so at odds with whatever was going on, that shit almost made me drop the drama. But oh well.

Overall, I'd say Blue Lips was a perfectly decent 7/10 watch. I enjoyed my time with it and finished feeling pretty satisfied, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it because it wasn't remarkable enough to make me want to tell everyone to watch it. If someone has the time and asks me about it, though, I'd probably just say, "Go ahead, it's not bad."

- one character smoked like a chimney in the first few episodes and it was not attractive
- episodes 8 and 9 were the cliches of jumped to conclusions, refused to communicate and ghosted
- the cat was abandoned???
- I wish they cut out the poor communication and gave the mafia guy a romantic interest
- disappointed he got rid of the blue hair and it was implied to be more acceptable, also the other guy got a different job
- they lobbed in a major plot in the finale that was not resolved, with no guarantee of a second season

A Chinese story, filmed in Korea, with the feel of a fairy tale.

I honestly don't understand some of the criticism surrounding AI, but in the case of this drama, I understand it even less.

I started watching it completely by chance. In fact, I didn't even know it existed until eight episodes had already been released.

I was hooked from the very first episode. Both lead actors are new to me—I don't remember seeing either of them in anything before. They're both adorable, handsome, and their performances have been more than satisfying.

The story is simple, but it has a few unique touches that keep it from feeling too clichéd.

The only thing that bothers me is the 20-minute runtime per episode. I would have preferred half as many episodes (16) with 40-minute runtimes instead.

I wish there were more time to explore the characters and their individual stories.

Even so, this is a BL that deserves a closer look, and I definitely recommend it.

I'm really enjoying this story. It's simple, yet charming, with the feel of a fairy tale.

Diamond in the rough,

So if i had to explain how i feel about Blue Lips in 5 words or less I would def call it "a diamond in the rough" you can tell that it didnt have the highest budget and it also has quite a few scenes where you can really tell that there was some AI usage, I am fine for now with it. FOR NOW. But if you aren't the biggest fan of usage of AI then skip this if you really cant see past it. If you can see past it i can highly recommend this show, it has two leads with fantastic chemistry. The absolute best part of this show is the relationship between Teng Mo and Wu Shi Xian. They are two broken souls who slowly heal each other, peeling back hidden wounds to find the courage to love again. I loved that the show avoided annoying misunderstandings, sure theres conflicts but misunderstandings in an endless circle wasnt what we got here. Oh what I actually really loved as well was how they used Teng Mo’s adult shop to inject genuine comedy into the plot.

On the downside, the subpar dubbing was a bit distracting at times for me, one of these moments was when Shi Xian was singing on stage. Additionally, the sister's storylines felt incredibly boring, and I constantly fought the urge to skip her scenes. However, I'm glad I stayed patient, as those scenes eventually tied into crucial emotional character moments for Teng Mo later in the series, without spoiling anything.

So, overall, despite the production flaws, the beautiful growth of the main couple makes this a highly rewarding watch. This is most def one im going to rewatch again. If not for the plot in itself, which I will, it will be for the Ice cream scene.
