A Japanese Remake That Gives a Beloved Story Fresh New Charm

I don't normally watch Japanese remakes of Thai dramas because they often feel lower budget and are much shorter than the original versions. Still, I absolutely loved the Thai version of Your Sky, so I decided to give this one a chance, and it did not disappoint. A few episodes in and I already have butterflies.

Ayuta is absolutely adorable as Hinata. He captures the kind hearted, innocent, and optimistic personality perfectly, making him impossible not to love. This is the second time I've seen him after School Trip: Joined a Group I'm Not Close To, where he played a supporting role, and he has such a warm and friendly screen presence.

Isshin is also well cast as Sora. He perfectly matches the cold, protective, and intimidating senior from the original. As the feared campus prince, he has the right balance of toughness and hidden softness, and his chemistry with Ayuta already feels natural.

The biggest surprise for me, though, is Oji. Even as Sora's love rival and a supporting character, he completely steals every scene he's in. He is incredibly handsome and charismatic, and I honestly couldn't take my eyes off him.

One thing I really appreciate is that the remake isn't a scene for scene copy. It keeps the fake relationship premise and university setting but adds its own small changes to keep things fresh. In the Thai version, Hinata is rescued and is supposed to get into the car, but in this remake version Sora carries him home on his back instead. That scene was so cute and adorable. The beautiful city skyline in the background made it feel much more refreshing than simply sitting in a car, and it gave them the chance to have a sweet conversation in the fresh air.

After just a few episodes, I'm completely hooked. I hope the series continues making thoughtful changes like this while staying true to what made the original so special. So far, this is probably the best Thai to Japanese remake I've seen.

If you enjoy romance, university settings, fake relationships that slowly become real, and sweet BL+ stories with lovable characters, this is definitely worth watching.

First impression

Nice and sweet. It is not without flaws but still quite enjoyable. If you watched the original Thai version, it's really easy to tell that this one has a much smaller budget. Due to this, a lot of moments that were in the original are missing from here or instead are made into lower-budget versions. But if you haven't seen it before, this series is pretty decent on its own.

Things I liked:
1. I love the cast. All of the characters remind me a lot of their original.
2. Chemistry.
3. Cinematography.
4. ThomasKong cameo. Yes, it was only for a few seconds, but I still loved seeing them.

Things I disliked:
1. Some moments feel like a total waste of screentime. Moments that resolve within a few minutes of screentime in the original are dragged out for ages here.
2. Choppy.
3. Not a lot of buildup of the romance, they just jump straight into the action, especially for the side couple.

This series is undercooked and bland

I’m usually a big fan of Japanese BL because of its creative writing and its ability to say so much with very little. But when you adapt a much longer Thai BL and reduce the running time by more than half, something is inevitably going to get lost. By Episode 7, I think I know what got lost here…the emotional connection.

The leads are handsome and individually they seem perfectly suited for their roles, but together I just don’t feel that chemistry. When they look at each other, I want to feel that little spark…the hesitation, longing, awkwardness, something. Instead, I’m watching two actors playing a romance rather than two characters slowly realizing they’ve fallen for each other. I’ve seen plenty of straight actors play gay roles so convincingly that one glance can say more than an entire scene. Here, those looks just aren’t speaking to me.

And strangely, despite being a much shorter adaptation, the middle still dragged. The endless flashbacks certainly didn’t help. Enough already! When you’ve cut the original story this drastically, every minute becomes precious. I don’t need another reminder of something I watched twenty minutes ago…I need those minutes developing the characters and relationships happening now.

Which brings me to the biggest question after Episode 7: how are they possibly going to fit everybody else in?

There are other characters with relationships that are only beginning to bud, yet they’re treated like side dishes at a Korean BBQ…a little banchan here, another little taste there, and just when I’m interested, someone takes the plate away. These relationships need time to simmer too. If you’re going to keep them from the Thai original, then give them enough room to matter. Otherwise, why put them on the table at all?

I love a good push-and-pull romance. The uncertainty is half the fun. But Your Sky: Hare nochi Koi has felt less like push-and-pull and more like push…and keep pushing away. Seven episodes in, I should be aching for Sora and Hinata to finally get together. Instead, I’m still waiting for their romance to convince me that they should.

Then we have an antagonist whose behavior has been pushed into such ridiculous territory that instead of creating tension, he simply irritates me. A good antagonist should make me fear what he might do next. This one makes me wonder why everyone around him hasn’t figured out how stupid his behavior is already.

And yes…I appreciated Thomas and Kong appearing for their little 15-second cameo at the end. Cute. A nice wink to those of us who know and enjoyed the Thai version. But let’s be serious…Thomas and Kong showing up for 15 seconds isn’t going to save this sinking boat.

The ingredients for a wonderful Japanese BL are all here…fake dating, friendship turning into love, jealousy, side couples, family, handsome leads and that delicious push-and-pull. The problem is we’re already at Episode 7 and there are still too many ingredients sitting on the kitchen counter. Someone needs to start cooking or get the hell out of the kitchen.

I actually don't hate it, it's a step up from the original

The Thai version was... I'm sorry it was just pure fanservice, less plot, less character growth and VERY leaning into tropes. It's a tough situation the Japanese crew had to handle, but I think they did a good job at fixing some of the issues:
PROS:
- It's cute you could say. The whole "fake date to escape intimidating senior" is so silly but it works? The plotline was harder to work with but you can see improvement to the actual story. I feel this time the leads learned something from falling in love. It does have a first love vibe, even if the events that happen are ludicrous.
- Hinata seems bubbly but like you can actually tell he's maturing. I don't think he's infantilized, he's just being himself. I admit, the "can't say no" trope threw me off but he visibly GREW though, like he said no to that guy who kept following him around and he finally faced that girl he kept misleading. It seems small but it's impactful in its own way. He's not a baby, nor a pushover. He learns having boundaries is important. I don't see the fetish trope Domundi gave the Thai series. I see someone who could be a real-life person with a complete personality.
- Sora was kinda forced into the "Young rich business owner" archetype but he feels normal and more natural than the original to be honest. He's just reserved, blunt and emotionally dry, and for some reason others saw him as a "Tyrant Prince" which is ridiculous. However, I like how he's not flirting every 5 seconds, or putting on the fake smile the Thai ML did for 90% of the series. He leans into the "cold hearted persona". He's not toxic at all, he's just not that expressive. He does seem to change, and while this was severely underdeveloped, we know he's emotionally invested and now brightened by true love.
- I like this style of production a lot, it's giving university short melodrama vibes. The budget seems low but you can't actually feel the quality is less. Music was also nice, it actually got stuck in my head for a long time
- Thank god they got rid of that female friend from the original adaption who kept going "Omg guys I'm in BL land" like EXCUSE ME, THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE IN YOUR STORYLINE HONEY.

CONS: (brutal)
- There's not that much emotional tension between the characters. Normally you'll know acting quality is good when the stares between the leads make you feel something. Sora's a lot harder to read than Hinata, we don't actually know in what way Hinata actually changed his life or what he meant to him. We understood he fell for him but what about him? His cute side? His caring, uplifting side? Give us a corny internal monologue if you wanna, at least that improves the emotional tone. The actors played their parts but that's the thing, they just played their parts. I don't see the hurt on their faces, or the realisation, or the concern.
- Umm... what is that thing between Sora's friends, that was just irrelevant. What I think would've been better is Makoto gives those glances of affection every now and then, then at the end he realises he could ask the other guy out and leaves the story on an open note. Underdeveloped yes, but it does reinforce pure love themes. Instead I see hard to read actions, random kiss scenes and a lack of clear intent. The show could've been rated above an 8/10 if we did this. I can't even blame the Japanese crew though, they had to respect the original and they did something to improve it.
- Once again, poor plot the Jteam was forced to deal with. Even though I feel the series evolved from the "fake dating" mess of a scenario, it needed better starting plot to boost it further. The bar thing was weird but I get that we don't want a "seen before" story of pursuit and all. They could've added more onto the plot but I guess it's a missed opportunity. I don't get why tf Sora even had to have a business when he's still in college, I'm convinced the whole drama is just vibes.

I was gonna rate this a 7 but it actually left an impression on me compared to the Thai one. I saw this more like a well-done school project that could win awards rather than a genuine J-drama. Enjoyable but severely neglected in plot events, emotional resonance and organisation. Kudos to the team, they actually gave it a decent go.

Overall: there's nothing terrible, yet nothing really draws me. I suggest starting at episode 5 if you're not hooked in the first episode. I watched the Thai Your Sky series, but am reviewing this series based on its own merits. 9 episodes about 25 minutes each.
