Had an insane potential

The last episode felt like a fever dream, and I'm honestly happy it's done. It wasn't bad, just not really good either.
Would I rewatch it? Only if there is a second season to refresh the memory.
Would I watch a second season? Yes, but I'm not necessarily excited for it or anything.
Things I liked:
1. Bai Che. He is really smart, and I love that about him.
2. Visuals.
3. Idea. The idea behind the series was great and definitely had a lot of potential, but they really didn't execute it well enough.
Things I disliked:
1. Confusing plot. It was interesting but confusing in a lot of aspects. Unfortunately, people who made it are terrible at explaining things. Instead of spending time on explaining certain parts in more depth, they just add more and more lore pieces to make it even more confusing.
2. Cheng Fan. He is an incredibly unlikable character and genuinely pissed me off so hard, and maybe it's a controversial opinion, but realistically he had no personal reason for killing Bai Che's "father."
"He killed my mother" sure buddy... You mean YOU killed your mother? You needed an organ transplant for her, and HE was the first person you went to for help?? Yeah, it's your own fault, and you have only yourself to blame.
And saying, "No need to thank me," what are you even talking about?
3. Credits to the episode ratio. This one is pretty petty, but 50% series and 50% credits is an insane ratio.
4. No logic. As much as I love the plot and idea of this series, I hate how it doesn't make absolutely any sense:
* In episode 5, Ling Ye was theorizing about who killed Bai Che's "father" and even had thoughts that Bai Che might've done it himself. Now in episode 6, all of a sudden, not only does he know that Cheng Fan was the one who did it, but he also doesn't elaborate on how he knows it.
* If Cheng Fan killed Bai Che's "father," how has he not been caught yet? That doesn't make sense. He clearly had some "business" going on with him, so he should be one of the suspects, and don't even get me started on the fact that he touched him without gloves before killing him.
Watching this series feels like there is at least a one-episode gap between each episode. It feels like I'm always missing some information, and things are happening behind the scenes.

Waiting for more.....
Plot: Entertaining and intriguing. Incomplete.Acting: Better than most. Characters believable. ML needed more screen time. I liked how their relationship evolved. 2nd ML delivered but could do with less speeches.
Atmosphere: The unknown worked in its favor. Nothing was revealed until it was needed to kbe known. Grimy, dirty and depressing.
Direction: Good. Pacing was as it should be. Flashbacks filled in snippets that could be forgotten, used for revelation or introspection and impact.
Length of scenes and series: Episodes could be a little longer but it worked to stretch it to 8 ep with something new in each. So it wasn't repetitive.
Ended on a cliffhanger to be continued. Hope it does happen and funding is not an issue.

Into the Underworld
Unfold plunges straight into a gritty, atmospheric world of black market organ trafficking and mafia politics that feels incredibly raw. The story centers on Bai Che, a death-scene cleaner, and Zhou Chen, an organ donation coordinator, who get tangled up in a dangerous conspiracy after a sudden family death.What makes this show stand out is the dual-couple dynamic. The main couple serves pure "hurt/comfort" angst as they navigate grief, while the secondary mafia couple delivers insane tension. The unspoken pining and absolute loyalty between the gang heir and his confidant completely stole the show for me. The acting by Wang Yuxiao and Wang Yao is top tier, and the cinematic visuals give it a high budget noir aesthetic (even tho it clearly wasn't high budget).
The build up to the finale was so tense but then the show drops a crazy plot twist out of nowhere (to be honest, I kinda had my suspicions). To make matters worse, the show literally just flashes a "To Be Continued" card on the screen, leaving a mountain of unresolved plot points. We didn't even get closure on whether Zhao Ling Ye and Cheng Fan survived.
The only major heartbreak here is the format. The episodes are tiny around 12 to 17 minutes long and massive chunk of that runtime is aggressively eaten up by the intro and outro credits. It forces a highly complex crime mystery to rush through its pacing, which can make the plot feel a bit chaotic in certain segments. Despite the editing constraints, the cast completely carries the show, and the entire soundtrack is an immaculate, no-skip masterpiece that perfectly anchors the emotional weight of the series.
Final Verdict: Definitely watch it if you love mysteries. It's a gorgeous, dark ride, but you have to go into it knowing you are going to be left begging for a Season 2 announcement immediately.

The Only Chinese BL This Season That Isn’t Working for Me
I’m watching five currently airing Chinese BLs and four of them are easy 10 out of 10s for me.This was the only one that didn’t click. The intro and ending credits felt far too long, a 20 minute episode already has a 2 minute intro and 7 minute ending credits, so half of it isn't actually watchable content. I've never seen a series with ending credits that are this long.
The plot was confusing, and I never really connected with the characters. Chinese BLs usually deliver for me, so this one ended up being a disappointment.
Now that I’ve reached the finale, my opinion hasn’t changed. I kept hoping it would improve, but unfortunately it never did.

Not bad.
I don't know why people say the plot was confusing, i was very clear to me. This story wasn't bad, but somehow the production failed it. It was a very interesting story, but they didn't use it to the full potential. The visuals and music were ok.The actors did ok, but weren't spectacular. The kisses and NC scenes were good enough.
I see there will be a second season, i wonder where the story will go in that season.

One Evening Well Spent
I'm actually glad I waited until Unfold had completely finished airing before starting it.With episodes that run for only about twenty minutes, I honestly can't imagine watching this drama one episode at a time. Just when the story begins to gain momentum, the credits roll. This is definitely the kind of series that benefits from binge-watching, and I genuinely think I enjoyed it much more because I could watch several episodes back-to-back.
Going in, I didn't expect anything particularly groundbreaking. Like many mini-dramas, Unfold had to tell a complete story with very limited screen time, so I was prepared for a rushed narrative. Surprisingly, though, the story holds together much better than I expected. The plot is intriguing from the very beginning. Without revealing too much, the drama gradually uncovers its mysteries while balancing suspense, emotional moments, and character development. Of course, the shorter format means that some storylines and relationships don't receive as much attention as they probably deserved, but considering the runtime, I think the writers did a commendable job of making everything feel coherent rather than chaotic.
Every episode pushes the story forward, and there are very few moments that feel like filler.
Naturally, there are some limitations. With episodes this short, certain emotional moments could have benefited from a little more breathing room. There are scenes where I found myself wishing the drama had slowed down just enough to explore a character's thoughts or relationships in greater depth. Given a traditional episode length, some storylines could have become even more impactful.

Drop In. Keep Up. Figure It Out.
Unfold doesn't hold your hand. There's no careful exposition, no gentle introduction to the world or its characters , you're simply dropped in and expected to watch.The series seems to be doing this deliberately, positioning the audience as observers rather than participants. We see, but we aren't guided. Personally, I don't mind that at all. I'd rather piece things together myself than have everything spelled out for me.
The story itself is dark and genuinely compelling: a death-scene cleanup worker, a mysterious death, organ trafficking rings, hidden identities. It has the bones of a proper crime thriller and, at times, almost feels like the Chinese counterpart to The Prosecutor's Proposal. Not because the stories are the same, but because they scratch a similar itch: crime, conspiracies, morally grey characters, and relationships developing quietly alongside the investigation.
What makes it stand out most, though, is its dual-couple dynamic. The two pairings work as near-perfect counterweights to each other. One built around grief and quiet hurt/comfort, the other around an openly toxic relationship that never really asks for your approval.
The secondary couple fascinated me for exactly that reason. Their relationship is deeply unhealthy: absolute loyalty bordering on self-destruction, punishments accepted without resistance, power constantly shifting between devotion and control. Yet the series never feels compelled to justify or soften that dynamic. It simply lets them exist as they are. They aren't presented as a fantasy to aspire to, nor does the story search for convenient excuses. Their dynamic simply exists, and whether you find it compelling or disturbing is left entirely up to you.
My one genuine complaint has nothing to do with the writing: the runtime management is baffling. A twenty-minute episode with a two-minute intro and seven minutes of ending credits means you're getting roughly eleven minutes of actual content. I have genuinely never seen ending credits that long on any series. Ever.
But if you can make peace with that, Unfold is quietly one of the more interesting crime BLs I've watched recently.

Was SOOOO close to being a good drama!!
IMO this show was okay/decent. It definitely needed to be longer.It was so pointless have an already short episode, shortened even more by five minutes credits at the end. The storyline is really good. It does need some filling in in certain parts. There’s so many questions that should be answered.
Hopefully season two (to be continued) will give us better, runtime and storyline. Would I watch again ? No .

Potential is there
Unfold has a really interesting premise with a lot of potential. The way it was executed, though... that's another question. I don't know if the budget was the issue, but something just didn't fully come together.At first, I honestly had no idea what was going on. So I'm not going to blame the series entirely. Maybe I'm just too dumb to understand it. Hahaha.
One thing I have to mention is the runtime. The whole episode is only around 20 minutes, but about 2 minutes are spent on the opening and another 5 minutes on the ending credits. HAHAHA.
That said, I still think the series has a lot of potential if they execute it the right way. The ending even says "To Be Continued," so I have no idea if they're actually planning a Season 2.
But yes, I need a Season 2. I need answers.

I was so disappointed. 😔 The series had a lot of potential, but it felt rushed and underdeveloped.If they had spent more time building the story and giving the characters more depth, I think it could have been a much stronger series. It had the foundation to be something really good, but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to its potential.

Nothing has truly unfolded
What a waste of potential. This drama had all the ingredients for an interesting thriller but failed to execute them in even an average way. Perhaps the limited budget played a part, but the story already had a spark. It just needed a little more fire to deliver a truly compelling performance.What frustrated me most was that the end credits consumed almost half of each episode’s runtime. Considering the episodes were already very short, it felt like a huge waste of screen time. On top of that, the lack of proper character introductions resulted in messy pacing, making it difficult to connect with the story.
So why did I keep watching despite all these negatives? As I mentioned, I held onto the potential, the hope that the series would eventually redeem itself. The thriller premise genuinely caught my attention, and the lead actors were handsome with promising chemistry.
Unfortunately, by the end, nothing was really revealed. The only shocking moment was when the three main characters were suddenly shot one after another, with no real buildup or sense of danger. I was also disappointed that the drama never explained why the librarian resorted to violence or how she was connected to the crime in the first place.
The series ended with a “To Be Continued” message. I’m not sure if I’ll give it another chance, but if a second season does happen, I hope the production significantly improves and finally delivers the quality this story deserves.

A series with potential but zero development
In my opinion, this series had everything to be one of the best currently airing. It presented a unique plot with themes of suspense, action, and romance mixed within an environment of trafficking and corruption. However, it was the complete opposite. Its development was minimal; at times, it was unclear what was actually happening. You can tell the production team doesn't know how to handle the story when, out of an episode of around 20 minutes, practically 9 minutes are dedicated to the opening and closing credits. And what about that ending? I expected at least a decent conclusion, but they couldn't even manage that.Was this review helpful to you?
