Chu Ying Tai, a young woman from a wealthy family, defies traditional expectations and wins the chance to attend school alongside young men. Disguised as a male student, she meets a kindred spirit, Liang Shan Po, on her journey. The two share quarters and studies, reciting poetry and composing verses together over three years of companionship—a period during which Chu Ying Tai falls in love with Liang Shan Po. However, their romance is thwarted by rigid social hierarchies. Unable to be together in life, they choose death. The fluttering, colorful butterflies symbolize their yearning for freedom; finally liberated from all constraints, they are free to dance together for eternity.
