Good Doctor Episode 11

The Soo Jin refuses to leave with her mother-in-law and insists on giving birth to her child (and having the surgery) in the hospital. The mother-in-law tells her to get a divorce because she won’t take care of the daughter in law or the baby after this.


The daughter-in-law says that’s fine because she wouldn’t want to raise her baby in that sort of household anyway. She suddenly faints and collapses into Yoon Seo’s arms.


They rush her back into the hospital and once she regains consciousness, her only concern is how her baby is doing.


Shi On’s mother is meeting with Dr. Choi. He asks her why she left in the first place, only to reappear suddenly 20 years later. All she tells him is that a situation arose. Her plan is to not tell Shi On the truth until he remembers who she is, and she asks Dr. Choi to keep her identity a secret too.


Do Han and Yoon Seo meet with Dr. Min (I think that’s her name, sorry if I’m wrong!) They’ve placed guards around the expecting mother’s room, just in case the mother-in-law tries to stir up more trouble. Right now mother and baby are doing fine, but because of the complications and the medicine side effects, when they perform the surgery on the baby they will only have 15 minutes to do so instead of the usual 30.


Shi On visits the expecting mother. He tells her not to worry because the “Batman-like” men outside will keep the “Joker-like” men from getting in. His words of comfort give the patient strength, even if they aren’t from her husband. He tells her “fighting!” and leaves with Yoon Seo.




 
Gyu Hyun’s mother approaches Yoon Seo and Shi On and expresses her interest in adopting Eun Ok. Shi On and Yoon Seo are glad that she’ll be able go into a good home.


Do Han apologizes to Chae Kyung for their last fight. She says she’s sorry too, and agrees to reconsider her plan to become the director at his request. She says it might be too late though, she might have already gone too far.
 
He says he thinks they should spend some time apart (OMG). She tells him that’s fine, she’ll be waiting for him.


Do Han leaves and walks into the Pediatrics Office, where the residents are waiting to wish him happy birthday. They’ve prepared a cake and all. When the other interns give Do Han a present that they all bought together, Shi On feels guilty because he didn’t even know it was Do Han’s birthday.


In Hae’s sister, In Young, is meeting Dr. Kim because she wants to be the donor for In Hae’s transplant. He warns her of the possible risks of the transplant, but she insisted on doing it anyway.


Shi On goes to Do Han to give him a birthday present. Shi On tells Do Han that he was really afraid of Do Han at first, and how he’s a little less afraid. Do Han opens the gift when Shi On leaves, it’s a cute looking stethoscope. Do Han finds himself remembering the last birthday present his younger brother gave him… a medical book.


Nurse Jung Mi asks In Hae who is the most handsome out of Shi On, Jin Wook and himself. Without hesitation she answers “Shi On” but Jin Wook insists it was him before Shi On began working at the hospital. Nurse Jung Mi says he used to be second place, but Nurse Joo Yeon tells him that isn’t the case. Shi On tells them that there was once a study that said handsome people get paid more…
 
In Young comes into the room, and the situation is a bit awkward with Jin Wook in the room. Shi On notices that In Young has a band-aid, and asks if she had blood taken. She lies and says she’s been feeling ill lately in order to keep the transplant a secret.


She leaves and Jin Wook follows after her. He apologizes for making her feel uncomfortable by asking her out. His feelings are sincere, however, and that was the only way he knew how to express them. His tells her his feelings are still the same now. She tells him that she isn’t in a situation where she can date him right now, and that’s why she feels sorry for him.


Shi On finds In Hae crying on the staircase. Thinking that her sister is sick, she feels bad knowing her sister has been working so hard to pay for her intestine transplant.
 
She reveals that she was involved in a hit and run accident,and because of that her entire small intestine was removed. The culprit was never caught; if he had been they would have gotten compensation for her surgeries. She cries, and Shi On puts his arm around her.


Dr. Choi meets with Chairman Lee. His idea is to make a children’s hospital, but Chairman Lee says there isn’t funding for that. They discuss the possibility of for-profit hospitals, which might improve service quality but it would also raise the price of treatment.
 
Do Han is about to leave work but he stops and asks Yoon Seo is she has any plans. They ride in his can and she asks him if he and Chae Kyung had a fight. She complains that she feels awkward about being a replacement date for him and insists that soon she’ll catch her own man. He tells her that with her drinking habit all men will run away from her.
 
He brings up something she said while she was drunk,“Sunbaenim… from a long time ago I’ve been lik—Do you like steamed food?” Oh no! A drunken confession? Poor Yoon Seo.
 
She rolls down the window, shouts “I’m so embarrassed!” and smiles.


Shi On gets coffee and a muffin in the hospital café and notices Chae Kyung sitting by herself. He sits at a table by himself but she talks to him anyway. She asks if he’s thought over her offer. He tells him he’s decided not to make any more trouble and to spend time with him when Do Han is alone.


Chae Kyung asks if Do Han is alone a lot, and he nods in response. Do Han eats alone, plays basketball alone, and rarely smiles.


Do Han and Yoon Seo are at the bowling alley together. Do Han is in a bad mood because he’s losing to her. He keeps bringing up the time she confessed to him and asks why she never brought it up after that day. She tells him that he started dating Chae Kyung soon after, so she put aside her feelings. She knows she can’t compare to Chae Kyung. Even a woman knows Chae Kyung is cool when they see her. Do Han tells her she’s cool too.
 
She denies it. Since she spends all day in a dirty surgical gown and she drinks too much, there’s nothing cool about her at all.
 
He insists “If I say so, it’s true…” and tells her to stop questioning what he says.


Shi On sleeps in the hospital and dreams about the mine accident.


Dr. Choi remembers when Shi On first came into his care and teaching him how to say “Hello”.


Shi On comes into Dr. Choi’s office, he tells him how little by little he’s starting to remember the mine accident and how he remembers all of it. He asks Dr. Choi why he saved him and not his brother. Had his “normal” brother lived, things would be better. Even his parents would have preferred it that way. He thinks Dr. Choi only saved him because of savant syndrome. He thinks Dr. Choi only saved him in order to make him into a doctor. He thinks he’s the one who should’ve died that day.
 
Dr. Choi tells him that Shi On had a higher chance of surviving, which is why he tried to save him first. If the roles had been reversed… he would have saved his brother instead.
 
Shi On drinks alone (isn’t he on duty? this seems like a bad idea)


Do Han drops Yoon Seo off at home and thanks her for always being by his side. He smiles, and it took me until now to realize that he really never does smile.
 
She walks home and sees Shi On sitting outside of his house.She leans in and based on smell alone she can tell he’s been drinking alcohol. Yoon Seo tells him that Dr. Choi made the right decision, and while he knows that’s true, he still feels guilty towards his brother.


Yoon Seo says that by being a good doctor that can serve as repayment for being saved that day. He cries and says that doesn’t change the fact that his brother is pitiful. He says it would have been better if he weren’t born at all.  She holds his face and wipes his tears, reminding him that it’s very adult-like for him to be caring for others like this. She leans his head on her shoulder and assures him that he’s a good person.


Later that night, she strokes his head as he sleeps.



Do Han and Dr. Choi meet together about the financial future of the hospital and the possibility of it becoming for-profit. He thanks Do Han for accepting Shi On as his student.
 
The children gather around to say goodbye to Eun Ok, who’s being discharged. She cries and tells Shi On that she loves him. He tells her he loves her too and she leaves with Gyu Hyun and his family.


Yoon Seo wraps her arm around him and tells him he did a good job. He quickly rushes away and sits by himself, his hand over his heart. In Hae sees him and knows it must be his crush that’s making him feel this way. She advises him to confess. He’s worried about being rejected, but In Hae urges him to do it anyway.


She asks him who he’s in love with and he says he can’t say it, so he’ll write it down instead. He passes her the piece of paper and rushes out of the room. When she opens it, it says “I’m not telling”.
 
With the possibility of the hospital turning into a for-profit corporation, Do Han meets with Hyun Tae. Hyun Tae is leaving the hospital and Do Han thinks this isall part of Chae Kyung’s plan.


Do Han gives Shi On his first academic assignment. He is to memorize all of the theses on those hard drives and then he will be assessed on his knowledge of them. The test won’t be pure memorization, but applied questions. If he fails he won’t be allowed into the operating room. Shi On isn’t confident in his skills, but accepts the assignment anyway.

The other residents hear about Shi On’s assignment. They’re all struck by how difficult it would be to learn all of the material, but wish him good luck.
 
Yoon Seo brings up the assignment when she comes out of the operating room. She tells Do Han she isn’t sure what she would have done had she been given an assignment like that. Do Han admits that if it were him he would’ve given up from the beginning, since this is beyond the capacity of a normal human. Yoon Seo takes this as a sign that Do Han believes in Shi On’s ability.


The expectant mother is served with divorce papers. Right before she puts her seal on it, Yoon Seo comes in and asks her to reconsider. Maybe if she talks with her mother-in-law again or her husband she wouldn’t have to go through with this. The patient says it’s no use, and puts her seal on the paper.
 
Do Han, Yoon Seo, and Dr. Min meet together to discuss the expectant mother’s surgery. They’re decided it’s best not to wait any longer to perform the surgery because the mother’s unstable condition could put both the mother and baby at risk.


Shi On studies in the office. Feeling tired, he begins to daydream and remembers the times Yoon Seo has hugged him and put her head on his shoulder. Yoon Seo comes in and leans over his shoulder to see what he’s reading. She puts her hand on his computer mouse, just inches away from where his hand rests on the desk.


Later he sits alone and listens to his own heartbeat with a stethoscope. He remembers what In Hae told him about confessing his feelings…
 
Yoon Seo prepares for the surgery tomorrow as Shi On prepares his outfit for his confession.


He shows up at Yoon Seo’s house that same night, dressed in a suit. She invites him in and he pulls out a single rose from behind his back. Her assumption is that he’s come to ask for a favor since he seems to be putting in so much effort.


He tries to tell her what he’s there for but he can’t seem to get the words out. She starts to get impatient and tells him to quickly tell her. He lies (wow!) and says that he just stopped by and dressing up like that is his hobby.


Shi On goes back home and hugs his pillow. Yoon Seo goes back to her research and glances at the flower he gave her.


The next day they run into each other at the hospital, and after saying hello briefly, Shi On tries to run away from her. Yoon Seo tells him to stop and asks why he’s been acting so strangely around her and asks if he did something wrong. He insists that isn’t the case.


It’s about time for the doctors to take their patient into surgery. Her last request is that if they are given the choice between saving her or the baby that they should choose the baby. The doctors glace at each other, looking a little worried that she feels like this. They reassure her that the situation won’t be like that.


Dr. Min and Do Han prepare the rest of the team for the surgery. They’ll have only 15 minutes (maybe less) for this surgery or else both the mother and child will be at risk.


The surgery begins and Dr. Go and his team of doctors sit above and observe. The first part of the surgery (the C-section) is led by Dr. Min. Once the baby has been removed from the uterus and the 15-minute countdown begins. The doctors try to insert a breathing tube but due to swelling around the newborn’s neck the doctors are having trouble inserting it. Do Han decides to try it himself. There are only seven minutes left on the clock, the breathing tube hasn’t been inserted and the mother is beginning to bleed. Do Han decides to perform an emergency tracheotomy on the infant but Shi On suggests (accurately) that because of the bleeding in the lymphangioma, a tracheotomy is impossible.


Just then the mother begins bleeding even more, and her vitals drop significantly. Dr. Min calls for blood for a transfusion for the mother. Only four minutes are left on the clock and the episode ends with both the mother and infant in critical condition...
