Peace 25’s Weekend Movie Picks
Lately, I’ve been having a thing for really quirky movies, movies that are weird in the way that they make you ask ‘what the heck was that?’ while still allowing you to have fun. You’ll probably find that their directors’ styles are bit different than your average movie, but that’s what I think make these films unique and true gems.

Country: South Korea                                     Year: 2008                         Genre:  Romance, Comedy

Synopsis:  Jin Hyeok (Joo Ji Hoon), a womanizing chaebol, decides to open a bakery that is popular with girls. He hires Ki Beom (Yoo Ah In), an ex-boxer with a crazy sweet tooth, Su Young (Choi Ji Ho), his dim-witted bodyguard, and Seon Woo (Kim Jae Wook), his former classmate to help him run the shop. These four characters somehow manage to get along and even form a brotherhood. However, as time goes on, dark secrets begin to reveal themselves and so does Jin Hyeok’s true intention in opening a bakery.

I originally watched this movie just because I’m a big fan of Joo Ji Hoo; however, as time progressed I found myself falling for all the characters. It’s funny, it’s romantic, dark at times, and I find it amazing that one movie can encompass so many genres.  Plus, all the delicious looking desserts only added to my enjoyment while watching the film.

Country: Japan                                        Year: 2010                           Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama

Synopsis:  One night, Kamedara (Ikuta Toma), a trickster salesman, decides to stay at the remote Seaside Motel, which in fact is surrounded by mountains. There he meets a surprising group of characters, including a call-girl named Candy (Aso Kumiko), and things began to take an unsuspected turn.

This I watched just because I’m a sucker for movies with multiple storylines. I’m not gonna lie. This movie was straight up weird, and that’s part of the reason I liked it so much. The characters are so distinctive and creative. There was a never time that one story was more interesting than the other. Pay close attention at the end, otherwise, the major twist will leave you scratching your head.

Country: Taiwan                                     Year: 2011                            Genre: Romance, Comedy

Synopsis: Liang Ruo Qing (Ariel Lin) decides to never fall in love again after being dumped by her boyfriend. Then she meets the attractive doctor Lu Zhe Han (Bolin Chen), who seems too good to be true. She vows to uncover the real, dark side of him. However, the more time she spends with the more she begins to fall for him.

I really loved Ariel Lin and Bolin Chen in In Time with You, so I was super excited to watch a movie where they were paired up again. It’s hilarious and lighthearted with a sweet romance and zippy storyline. It is definitely a feel-good film.
