Heart to Heart

I’m not a trend follower. On the contrary, I deliberately tend to go against trends. But when the trend is psychological dramas, I’m all for it.

I like  Chun Jung Myung well enough, and I have nothing against Choi Kang Hee but I know pretty well that if this drama weren't psychological AND tvN I would have probably dismissed it. I’m so glad I didn’t. Dear addicts, if you watch the first episode and think it’s not worth the time, I advise you to wait a bit longer. It’s only getting better. Hurray!!

Ko Yi Seok (Chun Jung Myung) is an infamous but talented psychiatrist. He’s irresponsible, childish, careless, snobby, bossy, and egocentric. He hides his scars behind that cold mask which results in being unable to sleep beside anybody and a phobia of his own patients. By coincidence, he realizes that his phobia and sleeping troubles disappear whenever Cha Hong Do (Choi Kang Hee) is around.

Cha Hong Do on the other hand has severe social phobia. She’s caring, well-read, and talented. She was raised by her grandmother and only knew her. After her grandmother’s death, she was literally and metaphorically saved by Detective Jang Doo Soo (Lee Jae Yoon). From that day and for 7 years she lived for him. She always wears a helmet when she's outside, and she can only communicate if she disguises herself as her grandmother (the disguise is AWESOME).

To be able to stand confidently in front of him, she decides to receive treatment from Dr. Ko. For the mutual benefits, Ko Yi Seok and Cha Hong Do grow close. Unintentionally and unconsciously their souls and their bodies start communicating, and their suffering becomes lighter. With Dr. Ko’s prejudices and Hong Do’s enormous love for Detective Jang; how will their relationship turn out?!

Detective Jang - our second lead - is a caring, outright, and diligent detective. He comes from a rich traditional family and follows their wills to the letter. Not realizing his own feelings, he risks his happiness and others’.

Ko Se Ro ( Ahn So Hee) is the supposed female second lead. She’s useless, full of herself, rude, and callous. She believes she’s going to become one of the best actresses and cannot even complete one extra role properly. I still have no idea what she is doing in the drama honestly.

Now put the plot aside and let me tell you why I am head over heels in love with this drama. First, do not make the mistake of comparing it with other ongoing psychological dramas. This has nothing to do with Kill Me, Heal Me or Hyde, Jekyll, Me so do not even think of comparing.

I’m not a fan of romances; not a big one. I find them corny mostly, and they give me goosebumps. I’m not professionally analyzing it now. But I know one thing: if a romance gives me butterflies and has me gaping at the screen holding my heart not to burst out; that’s what I consider a work of art. This is personal I know, but Ko Yi Sok’s and Cha Hong Do’s moments put me in that kind of fit. Ko Yi Sok’s warm eyes and tender looks with Cha Hong Do’s eager but scared heart are so touching. I simply LOVE their moments.

I have watched a few of Choi Kang Hee’s works. I don’t like or hate her. I don’t skip a drama she’s in, but I don’t get excited either. But I admit, here she’s perfect for the role. I never thought Choi Kang Hee would ever make me cry. Six episodes in, and I cried because of her 4 times already; that’s a record.

The font they use and the pictures and the logos of the number of episodes are so cute. The OSTs are so weird but so beautiful.

There is that scene where both leads confess something, pause and say: 그때 (that moment). If only for ‘’that moment’’; the drama is completely worth it.

Everyone in the drama has their own psychological issue - like every one of us has. The drama doesn’t exaggerate or present rare cases. It only presents US in a form of a drama. How we need each other to get healed. It’s not about theories as much as it’s about human love and care. It's not THEIR story; it's ours.
