Yuichi Fukuda revealed the news on November 16 that he will be directing the sequel to the popular 2017 film Gintama. This live-action film, based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga of the same name, has achieved success at the Japanese box office, far exceeding anyone's expectations.

The film has sold more than 1.3 million tickets in the first week and earned  30 billion yen since its release on July 14, 2017; thus becoming the most successful Japanese live-action film of that year.

There is also a three-episode web drama based on the Mitsuba Arc of the manga and it has been viewed over 2 million times on YouTube since its release. It also premiered on an online video streaming service dTV on  the same day as the film, and after that became the most watched  web drama on that service.

The sequel will be released in summer 2018 but the exact date is still unknown.
