The Weak Hero series is making an unexpected move from Wavve to Netflix.
According to several industry insiders, the production team of Weak Hero is considering releasing Season 2 on Netflix.
This move is prompted by Wavve's financial difficulties, which have left the OTT platform with limited resources to invest in original content. Wavve incurred an operating loss of 121.7 billion won last year and recorded a deficit of 79.7 billion won in the third quarter of this year. Despite consistent investment in original content, their returns have fallen short of expectations.
Due to the numerous challenges Wavve is facing, the production of Weak Hero Class 2 is met with setbacks.
Weak Hero Class 1, released last year, stood out as one of Wavve's successes.
However, faced with financial constraints despite the evident potential for Season 2, the production team sought to overcome these challenges by switching platforms. For Netflix, the series would seemingly be a valuable addition. Discussions between Wavve and the production company are said to be in the final stages.
Regarding this, a Netflix representative commented, "We have indeed been internally reviewing the situation. However, we are not yet in a position to make a decision yet. So please understand that it is difficult to give a concrete response."
Based on the webtoon of the same name, Weak Hero Class 1 tells the story of Yeon Shi Eun (Park Ji Hoon), a top 1% student who appears weak but stands up against violence within and outside the school. It's a coming-of-age drama that has garnered critical acclaim, winning the Best OTT Original award at the Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards 2023.
The series will kick off Season 2 production with the script reading on December 1.
