Read a short novel "A Moment but Forever" (which has been adapted into Liu Xue Yi's xianxia drama, which will be broadcast in December). It is already translated into English on the drama's page (it is another very short novel).
Full English translation of the novel: https://www.midnightscrolls.com/2024/09/unmatched-under-heaven-list-of-chapters.html
PS:
It's a different story (but the character of the fox priest), which is Liu Xue Yi's character, is very romantic and charming.

There is a tonal shift from the initial three episodes. I do feel it is a bit jarring but I am still very intrigued to see how the story/plot will play out and of course also here to enjoy the romance. The drama has established that MJH’s vulgar, callous, despicable side is him play acting and putting on a front. He has been using this persona for the past 10 years as a cover to allow him to plan in the background how he is going to bring down the real culprit. What we discover about MJH is that he is in fact compassionate, however due to him having been ostracized for so long he has somewhat lost his ability to express true affection, warmth and probably love. So him warming up to Mei Lin may appear like becoming a “simp” but this is part of his development. It is also part of her’s. Well this is how I am seeing it. I have seen part of Love in the Desert and as much as I like Alen Fang not sure I can continue due to the number of rape attempts, not comfortable with it.

1ML's quest is virtuous. He wants to avenge his army and the people of Zhingzou, clean his reputation and stop the mastermind.
So, basically, whatever he does is for the greater good. To me he is not evil. He wears a "mask"
He is not a "joker" but more of a "batman"

@blabla100 So, this is exactly the scene I was talking about from the beginning. I'm not sure if it's a wedding. Considering the "cup" and the red thread, it really does look like a wedding. But if you look at the location (it seems to be the palace) and the atmosphere in general, it doesn't seem like one. There are two maids holding a lantern and one servant holding a wooden box. Not to mention the clothes that don't seem to match the event. That's exactly why I thought this could be her plan to fake her death, because when they carry her body to be buried and when he digs her up, she's wearing the same dress, necklace and everything. That's where the other photo comes in (the link is in the friend's answer below) where the two are kind of in a worship ceremony with matching dresses, but it's just the two of them and the servants. So we can think that she fakes her death and goes to the 2ML kingdom with him. Then the question would be why. I think it's after she leaves that the CP will crush the ML, as shown in the trailer, the ML all cut by the brother and the emperor seeing it and having a heart attack.

This story has that classic element of sibling rivalry. It's a war for the love of a father, for the love of a woman. There are two rivalries here. And because of this frustrated love (both family and romantic), someone can become the worst enemy, vengeful, terrible. (So, in that sense, the plot is not that simple). More important than the intrigue is the psychological conflict.(And also the psychological conflict rooted in the past of the main couple). 👓🪄🎻🔓🔎⏰

unbeliebubble

General Yin is rejecting Crown Prince, the same way Prince Jing is rejecting General Yin.
She refuses to call the CP by his name whereas he does.
Prince Jing keeps calling her "General Yin", despite her addressing him by "Murong Jing He".

Even like that, she doesn't get that, this man is not destined to her.

@unbeliebubble I'm also very captivated! Watching this series means not making comparisons with The Double, they're totally different ideas and proposals. It would be natural to compare because The Double has barely ended and we already have the Kill me Love Me series. WJY is perfect in the role, she's completely detached from Xue Fang Fei, she doesn't repeat any interpretative pattern of her previous characters (Yang Zi, for example, she always has the same expressions, she doesn't break the pattern, it seems like she just changes her name and clothes). Likewise, we cannot make comparisons between Murong Jing He and Duke Su. Liu Xue Yi does a great job, he's super handsome and sensual, very similar to Deng Wei (Lost You Forever), both have fine and classic facial features, the same body type. The series has a constant rhythm, it's thought-provoking, the plot is easy to assimilate, very clear, there is no open narrative generating interpretative doubts. The leaders' relationship began in a sadomasochistic atmosphere, with scenes that broke with mere sensuality to give way to the erotic, without vulgarity, but I feel that it moves towards delicacy and poetry. The undying flower is this poetic counterpoint and appears luminous in the dark dungeon, as well as in MJH's garden. It's mentioned during the plot as an important "character". The original title 春花焰 literally translated is Spring Flower Flame. The undying flower is a symbol of life. I believe in a happy ending where we see this flower in Spring!

@Regina de Sá Yes, I believe in an happy ending too. The undying flower is a very important element of the plot. It is showcased in the opening credit several times. More than a symbol of resilience and strength. I would not be surprised if this flower serves to transmit secret messages in the future.
    Time will tell.

As for the aesthetics of the show, it is just gorgeous.
The colours, costumes, make-up. Everything is beautiful.
I liked that it started with Prince Jing as an anti-hero paired with a strong female assassin. The first 3 episodes were breath taking. And that sadomasochistic scene in the pool was the climax of this encounter.
Because behind all the stabbing and the stranggeling, I could see Prince Jing's attraction for Mei Lin and her relentlessness.
The acting is that good, that LXY and WJY was able to convey to 2 emotions at the same time; wrath and attraction.

I was even more seduced by the drama when I witnessed Prince Jing's development.
From a cold and frightening "master of shadow works " who had to supress his emotions to survive killing attempts.
He is now, slowly openning up his heart to love thanks to Mei Lin.
Love blooms without him knowing it. And that's marvellous and poetic.

LXY and WJY are giving us such great performances. That those characters are alive thanks to their talents. The rest of the cast is great too. And the camera moves are very good.

Indeed, there is no comparison with their previous work because Prince Jing and Mei Lin are born and I am rooting for their happily ever after :)

I want to see more of them developing/showing their vulnerable sides to one another. Showing their weaknesses and being accepted by the other person without judgement is the ultimate test of feelings(trust/love).
Because of his own training, Mei Lin can't really pick up on the emotional clues/subtleties that Jing He expresses unknowingly to her. The servants around them can see it because they have to understand and anticipate the subtle shifts in their master's moods and emotions. Mei Lin and Jing He can recognize when someone has ill intent, but they don't really remember what love looks like anymore, so they keep missing the clues.

LXY is out here living his life as an actor and we are all wrapped around his finger. Like he can just stand there and he radiates emotions. How?

I'm liking this actor more and more. First saw him in "Love at night", then "Destined", "In blossom" and now here. I think this role is not really easy and he's portraying the character and emotions really well (just like FL). He's pretty good and handsome. I'm waiting for 3 of his upcoming dramas impatiently😊😊

This is for those who want to discuss the episodes as they progress and to return to the discussions throughout the show to add their insights.

I would title the first four episodes "Se Bu Liao" naming it after the Undying Flower. There are many references to death in these episodes and Mei Lin reminded MRJH they were both living for the dead. I feel that Jing He hasn't felt alive for a long time until his assassin decided to...kiss him.  RAWrrrrrr.

This first "phase" of the drama introduced us to the main characters

MurongJingHe, the Third Price (ML)

Mei Lin (FL)

Xiyan Prince (2ML/GreenTeaPrince)

Crown Prince (Bad Guy)

We get the back stories of these characters, how CP used a fake pendant (lingpai) to kill off an entire district/city of 100000 just so he could frame his brother JingHe and thus became the Crown Prince.

MurongJingHe spent ten years assembling a revenge plan, using Mei Lin as his personal assassin. He formed a Shadows Works Society to train her, poison her when she failed in her attempt to assassinate him and overall, acted like a crazed invalid into killing and drinking for those ten years.

Some questions and interesting stuff we can chat about:

1) What exactly was JingHe's revenge plan? It seemed so simple. Would it have work? Even his brother the CP could see through it!

2) How did Mei Lin suddenly fall into JingHe's hands as an assassin? In these episodes we see her rescuing the XiyanGreenTeaPrince and his assistant/servant--when was this? Was this before the great fire/death of her parents? She didn't seem crazy sad at the GreenTeaPrince meeting, right?

3) I love Mei Lin's personality. She was totally an assassin at this point--aloof, observant, always in control. She couldn't taste her food and we know those who have this affliction (like during COVID) lose a certain enjoyment of life. For ten years, all she could taste was revenge and she went through hellish training to get to where she was.

4) Which make us question--what kind of person is MRJH to allow a woman to suffer this kind of training just to assassinate him?  He was all ready to give her a great funeral after her death, so he'd planned on killing her after the assassination attempt, so he didn't actually want to get himself killed, just use her. But ALL THAT TRAINING to just kill him? Overkill, no? Heh.

5) GreenTeaXiyanPrince was in love with a rescuer from TEN YEARS ago whom he met for, what, half an hour? Maybe a day? Ten years...and a special knot for a keepsake. Really?! Of course, I watch all these Douyin CEO short dramas where the CEO is often looking for his special girl who blew on his bruised knee when he fell down ten years ago and then gave him her necklace or vice-versa. So I guess this is a usual C-Drama trope. Anyway, Mei Lin sure didn't get this special feeling about him. This dude was so in love, he was willing to "poison" her ala Romeo and Juliet and transport her corpse out of the palace grounds. And then what? His plan was pretty bizarre!

6) That MRJH trained Mei Lin like a Momai Warrior (the CP's sidekick's secret group) was also interesting. Why? Why not just any normal assassin? Why Momai? I have theories but would love to hear yours.

Please add any questions or any relevant observations about the first four episodes as you see fit, but try not to discuss outside of the episodes too much as I hope to start another topic of the next four or five episodes.

I think the end of Episode 4 is a good round up of the first segment of the story. We see who the players are--how they think and what their plans are. Also, we kind of see the end of the first phase of Jing He's and Mei Lin's relationship. It definitely changes after this episode, right? Here, it culminated with him whipping her (in order to save her life) and then declareing her his!

These 4 episodes--our two leads had been very raw with each other. He hadn't hesitated ten years ago to shoot her in the legs. He'd poked a hole in her neck. He'd whipped her.  She had kissed and bit him!  I like this early physical relationship very much, LOL.

So the book is way different. she doesn’t have the tragic story of avenging, she was simply kidnapped into being a spy. The org was not an assassination group. He created the spy network to plant spies next to officials and get intel on them for future use. He later exposes the spy network and pins it on the CP. all of these layered intrigue was not in the book. So many characters have stories that previously did not. The xiyan princess is not even talked about passed the setup plot. There was no prince. Some of the new plot points is simply to force 30+ episodes lol. That’s my take.

Yes, I read the book. Episodes 1-4 really have nothing to do with the book, except for the shell.

My questions are more in connection with the progression of the drama story. Are you enjoying the drama? :)

As soon as he finished chasing the thirteenth episode of Spring Flower Flame, Murong Jinghe reacted to what happened as soon as possible, oh my God! I can't think about the years when he was paralyzed before, from a proud son of the sky, to a disabled person who may be paralyzed for a lifetime, how he broke himself again and again and reorganized to survive this kind of day, I cried violently[泪]。 Jing and Meilin are two small bitter melons[泪][泪][泪]

#刘学义演技# I dare to shoot, I thought that this kind of plot actor would avoid but performed very calmly, the person who should be noble fell into the mud, very humiliating but helpless.
Liu Xueyi is very good at acting this kind of stubborn and miserable feeling. It was not only a painful look, but also an unwilling look, because Murong Jinghe had been enduring it for a long time, and the humiliation of self-esteem brought about by not being able to take care of himself.
So the pain has become commonplace, but the unwillingness and unwillingness will only be superimposed day after day, bringing to life the feeling of gritting your teeth and not admitting defeat, and grasping the subtle vivid moment between forbearance and unyielding.

I feel like there are a lot of veiled and unveiled indications in the trailers, ost and in some lines up to episode 13 so far that for me I think in the end the two will survive and will be together.
Sometimes in drama they always say, "It can't kill me." This is just one of the indications, as if to say, although we go through many adversities, and between life and death, we will survive and our love will become stronger. (my thoughts).

Thoughts on the (perhaps possible ending):

  • eliteles1  VIP

    Hide Spoiler

I think (the trailer) they are putting in the scenes to fool us. The scene of the whip against the flower petals near the cemetery is in the book (it was someone else's body), and she is alive and recovering elsewhere.
In the drama trailer, there are many new scenes (as the book is very short) and there have been many improvements to the story. Then, in the trailer, another scene to deceive us: They dressed in red wedding clothes (both lying in bed, she unconscious), and he with a knife in his hand, looking like he's going to kill himself, someone commented that this reminds a lot the story of Romeo and Juliet (Romeo killed himself because he thought Juliet was dead), but she had just drunk a substance that makes a person appear dead. When Juliet wakes up and sees that Romeo has died, she also kills herself.
PS:In the trailer Jing He carries Mei Lin on his back, she is unconscious. Then there is a scene of him drinking in front of a river, with her leaning on his shoulders, unconscious. (It could be that he thinks she's really dead). And another (behind scene), him taking care of her near the tree. In these 3 scenes she and he are wearing the same clothes.
Let's combine these scenes with the scene of them dressed in red. It could be that he thinks she died (and for a moment he thought about killing himself), but I think it's so illogical with his character (they both need to fulfill their revenge first), he wouldn't do this desperate act without having fulfilled his goals, for more than he loves her (and besides, he knew that their goals could bring risks to their lives).
    PS:
There are behind-the-scenes scenes: Mei Lin and Jing He sitting on a balcony admiring the flowers (I think), as it is in the book. He, in emperor's robes.

This scene was the last to be filmed (I don't know if it will be the last in the drama). When the actors finished filming it, they looked happy and proud.
