I would have very much liked it if Black Out (2024) series had aired on OTTs like Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, TVING, their encoders are really skilled and can deliver a fresh print of each episode with proper color grading, even Viki and Wavve encoders are decent. But VIU, VIDIO, FriDay quality just straight up sucks. Let me show you what I mean.

See these 2 screenshots from VIDIO: https://i.slow.pics/QeKUOnOe.jpg https://i.slow.pics/ehCiOgKN.jpg

And now see these 2 screenshots from Disney+: https://i.slow.pics/g763UU37.jpg https://i.slow.pics/1OLwHXr9.jpg (I know it's a different show but still, you should be able to identify the possible differences and the amount of dust you see in VIDIO than Disney+.)

In Disney+ prints you can see the details better, which is a plus side of any show. Any directors would want their creations to be watched in best quality, I'm not here to argue about the possibilities of where the show is available or not. Like Disney+ really sucks in providing all their regions with the same show, they do have rights but they think it won't be profitable enough to stream in all their regions, thats why they get some hate, but I wonder if they really care about that.

I'm also referring to streaming conglomerates like Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock TV, Paramount+. Their content video and audio quality is top-notch. I don't understand where is the problem, why does SBS, MBC, tvN etc sites doesn't stream/sell their contents in those international sites. Even if they do, it's really after a few months, that the show becomes available either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Disney+ rarely buys dramas after they are finished airing.

Let's talk about Again my life (2022): this series first aired 2 years ago simultaneously on VIU, FriDay and Korean local TVs, and yes as you guessed the quality wasn't the good. Neflix licensed the series this year a month ago, and now you go to Netflix and open up episode 1 and look at those scenes. Such beautiful encoding. (I have lots of example shows like this if anyone is curious and want to know more.)

I don't know why I wrote this post so big. :) I have always wanted to talk about the encoding (video and audio), subtitles of a specific streaming sites and their behind the scene teams working on it. Netflix and Disney+ subs are quite decent, but not 100 percent accurate, let's talk about it some other day. :)

I know most of the MDL watchers doesn't care about quality and will always watch it on trash sites like Dramacool, I have no comments about them. For them its like as long as they can watch it with subtitles they are good with it. Which is the worst perspective a normal human being can have. Some might have their own financial reasons, but still.

Sorry for talking your time, Happy reading.

(I was writing this in Black Out comments but it got too big XD.)

Higher quality encodings require more bandwidth to stream. Server bandwidth is expensive, so only the richest platforms, like Disney+, can afford that. Additionally, HDR encoded shows with beautiful colors require even more space and bandwidth..

I do agree that some platforms reduce bitrate too much, their 1080p looks like 480p, pixelated with a lot of noise and artifacts in fast moving scenes.

In my experience, the best way to enjoy drama is to download it directly onto your hard drive in the highest quality possible (preferably x265 encoding, to reduce file size). This also allows you to skip forward or backward by 10 seconds without any loading time, enables offline viewing, customizing subtitles and using the player of your choice.
