I’ll have a slice of cinnamon swirl toast at night for something sweet
I have a small spoonful of organic peanut butter - no added oil or sugar. Its a remarkable way to get hours of deep sleep and esp good for elderly people. It keeps my dad who has mild dementia from waking up multiple times at night ranting.
Is it the fat and protein that keeps the stomach satisfied for the night? Organic PB is the way to go.
Sleep becomes more challenging as we age for a variety of reasons. I have auto immune issues with pain attacking most of my joints. Makes everything more challenging. Even simple tasks like washing greens or fruit. Long gone are the days when I used to run. Because I’ve been forced to slow way down, it’s given me the opportunity to see the beauty all around me on the trail I use. Used to I just kept repeating Gimli’s (LOTR) mantra, “Keep breathing. That’s the key. Breathe.” Now it’s just “Keep moving.” 😆
Its a combination of things that regulate blood sugar:

For my folks their helper roasts peanuts and blends it with a spoonful of honey and olive oil and a pinch of salt - a small bag goes a long way. They keep it refrigerated. For myself I just get the best organic store bought one and read the label carefully bc I don't take it every night, just 2-3x a week.
I am sorry to hear about the arthritis - my sister-in-law and I both had it decades ago - mine was mild but hers was a lot worse bc HK is incredibly humid lots of people have bone aches. But we have been both fine for over a decade bc of alkaline water. We swear by it. It neutralizes the acid accumulation in the joints. But you have to drink it pretty much all day and you can't boil the water it has to be room temperature. We have installed a US based alkaline water system Vitev (https://vitev.com/) at home and I take the water with me to the office to drink. To start, you can just slice lemon and put it in your water - it has to be room temp. Lemon + room temp water is alkali but lemon + hot water is acidic, it will make you worse. Before I got the Vitev system, my helper just filled jugs of water with sliced lemon - take out the seeds bc the seeds make it bitter. Try it, you will feel a lot better in a few weeks. Esp if you are religious about drinking only that.
I have had a rotator cuff injury that has put a stop to my skiing, yoga and tennis for seven months now. I hear you on slowing down. That's also why I try to limit the carbs this year. We have to take care of ourselves.
