i like watching some of the vlogs on youtube, i recommend http://www.youtube.com/user/Entropy102 he does talk about language but from a foreigner's point of view and some other topics.. plus he has a smexy brit accent
and http://www.youtube.com/user/bobbyjudo this guy cracks me up. he does a lot of food vlogging but he goes into Japanese culture and history and language as well, again from a foreigner's point of view so it's easy to understand

i found the second one for sure through runnyrunny's channel and possibly the first one too i don't remember =D
Hi~
Thought I'd butt in =]
I'm also learning Japanese, and I'd gauge myself at somewhere between JLPT N3 and N2. My reading and listening are alright, but my writing and speaking are pretty bad orz
I've thought about using lang-8 but just can't get myself around to doing it!
In terms of other studies, I did Japanese history for one semster. So it was pretty basic stuff, but it's enough to get me started on my own learning. I've been reading up on the sengoku period recently =]
I'm also hoping to study Classical Japanese Literature next year, so I'm very much looking forward to that!

I learn Japanese formally at university; so with summer here I'm getting VERY lazy when it comes to study. Just seeing that people can be so positive about self-study is starting to motivate me to do more of it myself =]
yay welcome Pheefa! I love classic literature (studied it in college). I can give you some examples of some works that have pretty basic Japanese. As you probably already know, classic Japanese lit can be a little difficult to understand and can even be seen as having its own "dialect" depending on the form and era from which it comes. Have you read anything yet?

yay def let us know, and maybe post a review in the resources thread:

I've switched back to using live mocha again, lol. They've changed some things since I last signed in, but I still like it. I also started using the JA Sensei droid app. It's nice and it was free, so no complaints there. It's more productive than playing nfs shift, hehe.
nice have i added you yet? what's your user name? i'm under sandra03 my profile pic is Miyavi lol
i've noticed they've been fixing a lot of the mistakes that users point out in the tips actually. but they don't take the tips down so there's sometimes a tip pointing out a mistake that's not there anymore lol
i did my review of the text books in the language reference section. check it out.
yay. the dictionary sounds better than mine, maybe i'll pick it up sometime. mine (Random House) is very handy but makes me mad sometimes because for some words it'll show only the kanji. when i was still learning hiragana i'd sometimes look up a word just to see the hiragana spelling and be all disappointed that it showed only kanji. i feel like it should show both, but i guess this one isn't specifically a "beginners" dictionary so i'll forgive them lol. it does have H and K charts but no phrases, though i did find the pronunciation section at the beginning very helpful when i was first starting out. it's also ummm 16 years old hahaha maybe it is time for a new one :P

and i agree that it's sorta useless to do lessons all in romaji. that's one thing i like about the irasshai videos, he does everything in hiragana, and teaches how to write and read it gradually throughout the lessons (though i got impatient and jumped ahead haha, not in the lessons just in the hiragana)
How is live mocha? Is it weird talking to people you don't know??
i found this video on youtube and it's kinda inspired me to really get back into practicing. i like when gaijin (students or teacher) make positive videos of their experiences in japan. this guy has a lot of videos and he has such a nice vibe. he sounds like everyone on this thread who has a love for japanese culture and language. in this vid he gives pointers for how he learned japanese.

nah you don't have to talk to anyone if you don't want to. other users have nothing to do with your lessons, but when you submit excercises at the end of each lesson other users can critique them for you and show you any mistakes you made etc but it's not realtime, you submit a submission and any random person or someone on your friends list can choose to review it for you any time. but if you like meeting new people and chatting you can.

I study the language but only once a week and in term time haha. I don't know much yet. Will do a lot more next year :).
I would love to study history as well though
