Synopsis

Yuki Amami plays Maya Akutsu, a sixth-grade teacher who dresses all in black and is repeatedly referred to as "oni sensei" (the teacher from hell), when, in fact, she seems to be an ultrarealist at heart. The drama focuses on a year in her classroom and, particularly, the effect it has on 12-year-old Kazumi--a nice but mediocre student whose parents want to send her to a private secondary school.
Akutsu-sensei accomplished this feat by introducing a test-based rank and privilege system on the first day. The highest scorers on the Monday morning test get their choice of seats and other perks while the two lowest scorers are burdened with all the chores for the week from blackboard and toilet cleaning to serving lunch. The system also disallows toilet breaks during class because this reflects an inability to manage one's own schedule.
Kazumi gets the first week's work assignment along with the class clown, a warmhearted boy who is not nearly as silly as he acts. The child actors in the series are all likeable pros who give realistic portrayals of the wide spectrum of an average classroom from the isolated serious students to the sophisticated girls who think they already know what life is all about. Akutsu-sensei lets them know immediately that they do not have a clue.
When the students protest her system and call it unfair, she tells them to open their eyes. In Japanese society, she lectures, those who work hard or have influence get all the privileges, and the lazy or less affluent end up with the leftovers. She says only six in 100 people can expect to be happy and the elite already have most of the advantages and access to the best medical care. She tells them that, as products of the public school system, they will have to scramble to get anything at all, and most of them will end up as "bonjin" (ordinary people), to whom those on the top will be happy to leave the soldiering and service-sector jobs.

Ep 2: I so remember confiscating stuff we brought to school. I did have a fair share of confiscations. The tamagochi confiscation was hilarious. Because a confiscated tamagochi will die. lol. I recall my friend getting her digimon confiscated. heh... =/ Maybe this drama being alittle dated is actually a positive outcome, considering that their plots will be drawn from 1-2yr prior to the release, and that would bring it pretty close to my own p6 year.

Ep 4: It definitely is very unreasonable. I've been through all of that. Its injustice to the max. However, it actually is quite a strong representation of the realities of life. Unfortunately, this sort of buttering up, oppressionistic society is what exists Shida Mirai definitely reminds me myself. Strong sense of honour, takin the blame for others... even up to this day. However, it is a terrible trait to have and definitely negatively affects outcomes in reality. But its something, I still want to be able to continue to do, no matter how beaten and cynical I become. But admittedly she is being extremely shortsighted and lacking the vision in understanding how her actions are causing problems for everyone else in class. However, she is perhaps fortunate to learn that humans cannot be trusted at an early age. She is fortunate that she has nothing to lose. She can continue to fight her foolish war while not picking her battles appropriately... However, for grown-ups with responsibilities... it is not as easy to just throw things away in fighting a losing battle. I have learnt that all too well. In this world there are few you can trust, and you have to pick them very very well. But at the end of the day. Trust nobody.

Ep 7: I really feel bad for children w/ weak parents. I would hate so much to be the child of Shida Mirai's mom in the drama. Incompetent, continually making poor decisions... just terrible. I really hate working alongside such people, and even worse, being under the direction of such people. It's just like being on a sinking ship, and because ur a child, you are strapped down and just waiting to sink with the ship. People who are so worthless should really do their children a favour and not make them in the first place.

Ep 9: Reminded me how my teacher always told us we had no future and were going to go to crappy schools.

Well well I didn't know about its high ratings and special titles...

I mean the child actors who have been cast are stellar at what they do. Phenomenal in-fact. Nevertheless, it's going to be so incredibly difficult for the Korean re-make to compete with the original one which in my opinion is so raw & devoid of unnecessary bullshit. Furthermore, Amami Yuki nailed her role as the demonic teacher. Her personal appearance cemented this further. Mere glances and knowing when to speak and when to say nothing at all truly draws you in more. All of which ultimately help her character come across as so ferocious and cold. I think that's the beauty of J-Dramas. They strip everything away, leaving behind the bare essentials and thus exploring their subject matters with a great degree of honesty and immaculate simplicity.

I don't know. I will of course give the re-make a try, but it's going to difficult to refrain from comparing it to the original.
