Investiture of Gods (Novel)

"Investiture of Gods" (封神演義) narrates the story: since the emperor of Shang Dynasty Zhouwang went on a pilgrimage to the Goddess NvWa Temple, he disrespected the Goddess by writing a sacrilege poem. As a result, the Goddess commanded three demons to confuse Zhou, thus the story began and from then on the Shang royal government declined day by day, Jiang Ziya, who had cultivated himself for 40 years in the Kunlun Mountains, went down to help Zhou Dynasty defeat Shang Dynasty under the order of his master Yuanshi Tianzun. while Xichang Bo Jichang visited Jiang Ziya in the wilderness, he appointed him as prime minister. After Jichang's death, Zhou Dynasty was established and his second son Ji Fa was the emperor of Zhou. Subsequently Shang attacked Zhou for many times, but all ended in failure. Finally Zhou Dynasty conquered Shang and Emperor of Shang suicided himself. At the end, Jiang Ziya and Emperor of Zhou respectively granted titles to the vassals, thus ended this soty."Investiture of Gods" took the dynastic changes between Shang and Zhou as its historical background, and told the story of the political chaos of late Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty crusaded against Shang Dynasty, of which there are a lof of descriptions for battles of wits between Buddhas and gods, after Jiang Ziya and Emperor of Zhou respectively offered official postses to the vassals, this story ended. This novel gives full play to the imagination, and the gods described are mighty, bizarre and fantasy, from which you can feel romantic and active temperament of Ming culture.

This novel was written by Xu Zhong Lin (traditional Chinese: 許仲琳; simplified Chinese: 许仲琳; died 1560).
