Wuxia to watch
Wuxia series in my PTW list. Ranked by what I wish to watch first.
-
1. Nirvana in Fire
Chinese Drama - 2015, 54 episodes
The king of wuxia palace intrigue series, gotta wait till I'm able to deal with the angst
54 episodes
-
2. Word of Honor
Chinese Drama - 2021, 36 episodes
A wuxia story based on mystery and, well, gayness? Sign me up.
36 episodes
-
3. The Silent Criminal
Chinese Drama - 2020, 13 episodes
A 13 episode wuxia mystery with a bromance is indeed my sort of thing, except I am very curious about Word of Honor and I try not to watch similar series too close to one another.
-
4. The Moon Brightens for You
Chinese Drama - 2020, 36 episodes
Sweet romance, they say
36 episodes so I might check it out.
-
5. Painting Heart Expert
Chinese Drama - 2017, 20 episodes
This one just feels too weird. Is it fantasy? Is it a live action anime? Everyone says it's got good fight scenes so they slapped the wuxia tag in it, but it FEELS xianxia
20 episodes, though. I should check it out
-
6. New Smiling Proud Wanderer
Chinese Drama - 2018, 37 episodes
I just love this book too much, even with all the weird transphobic stuff
And 37 episodes? Why the hell not?
-
7. The Legend of Zu
Chinese Drama - 2015, 56 episodes
Pure juice of wuxia, even if the reviews all wished it was pure romance (you can tell from the words they use. Also, what moves a person to watch a series for a single actor and SKIP SCENES when they're not on? Pathological)
56 episodes AND has a sequel, or I'd already have watched it
-
8. The Vigilantes in Masks
Chinese Drama - 2011, 30 episodes
Seems a bit like a Robin Hood affair and there is nothing wrong with that, but it also doesn't sparks joy.
Still, only 30 episodes and starring Wallace Huo, so up the list it goes
-
9. The Deer and the Cauldron
Chinese Drama - 2020, 45 episodes
Palace intrigue, but comedic. They say it's smart, but I have issues with comedy
45 episodes
-
10. The Four
Chinese Drama - 2015, 48 episodes
4 cute martial artists, some investigating, some romance, some angst. Seems good.
48 episodes
-
11. The Three Heroes and Five Gallants
Chinese Drama - 2016, 42 episodes
No one has anything very dramatic to say about this one, besides some incoherent comments about actors' looks. It's based on a classic book, though.
42 episodes
-
12. The Dark Lord
Chinese Drama - 2018, 48 episodes
This seems actually good, even if not very much wuxia. Still, it's got fights and struggles, so it fits the list.
48 episodes, so a middle of the list type of thing.
-
13. The Wolf
Chinese Drama - 2020, 49 episodes
Palace intrigue AND 49 episodes long even though it was merciless cut
-
14. The Legend of the Condor Heroes
Chinese Drama - 2008, 50 episodes
50 episodes and well-liked, but it's not been too long since I last read Condor Heroes so I'll wait a bit
-
15. The Romance of the Condor Heroes
Chinese Drama - 2014, 54 episodes
54 episodes of properly produced classic story. Only it seems to be the Wrong Take on this book and I haven't even read the book, so I'll wait.
-
16. Listening Snow Tower
Chinese Drama - 2019, 56 episodes
One of them more modern fantasy-world wuxia stories. I'm not sure if it is adventure with romance in it or romance with adventure in it. There is a difference. When I have the courage to check I'll try it out.
56 episodes (uff)
-
17. Fighter of the Destiny
Chinese Drama - 2017, 52 episodes
Classic fantasy style Orphan Boy Is Actually Overpowered. Sounds a bit generical, but since any fantasy/wuxia drama with a male lead is considered fantastic by the local reviewers I can't quite tell if it's Actually Bad. I mean, The Taoism Grandmaster was much better than it had it right to be, so hey this one could as well.
*sigh*
I just want a plot based on choices not fate.
52 episodes
-
18. Colourful Bone
Chinese Drama - 2017, 54 episodes
It's tagged wuxia and has a jianghu as well as Weird Techniques That Border On Magic, but it seems to be more palace intrigue oriented than not. Still, seems good.
53 episodes, though
-
19. Fights Break Sphere
Chinese Drama - 2018, 45 episodes
Now this one feels 100% generical, even if it is probably the trope generator for some stuff found in later dramas, so instead of rolling my eyes I should just watch it
(chinese dramas take storylines and setpieces from one another, so keeping up with the times is important)
Still, 45 episodes and a second season
-
20. Bloody Romance
Chinese Drama - 2018, 36 episodes
This is another one of the trope originators, though you can tell it (and most wuxia drama from the same year) has a bit too much influence from The Hunger Games.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I started watching this one and dropped it without ever changing the status in here. And I'm pretty sure I dropped it because of the crapsack world.
36 episodes, I should just try.
-
21. Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain
Hong Kong Drama - 2007, 40 episodes
Highly recommended as an example of wuxia dramas from that era. Also, Fox Volant is just awesome, love that story.
40 episodes
-
22. Prince of Lan Ling
Chinese Drama - 2013, 46 episodes
Now sometimes you just know a drama will make you cry and you kinda protect your heart from it by leaving it on the PTW list forever. This is one of them.
46 episodes and a sequel
-
23. The Great Protector
Chinese Drama - 2014, 38 episodes
A serious historical wuxia.
38 episodes
-
24. The Lost Swordship
Chinese Drama - 2018, 36 episodes
Based on a Gu Long novel and seemingly not the best adaptation, so no rush.
36 episodes but doesn't seems to be in any streaming site
-
25. The Shaw Eleven Lang
Chinese Drama - 2016, 42 episodes
Seems to have a Bad Ending AND involve a Love Polygon, so it's been reviewed into oblivion
42 episodes
-
26. Ever Night
Chinese Drama - 2018, 60 episodes
Level of generic: in Grimdark World, Lone Survivor becomes guardian of Baby Girl, then Meets Royalty and ends up in Hogwarts.
The only reason I might watch this is what I said in the Fights Break Sphere entry, and in this case I'm in no rush at all bc 60 episodes and MULTIPLE SEASONS (with recasts lol)
-
27. Legend of Dagger Lee
Chinese Drama - 1999, 40 episodes
A classic. Doesn't seems to be available anywhere though.
40 episodes
-
28. The Legend of Chu Liu Xiang
Chinese Drama - 2007, 43 episodes
Another classic, also not easy to find.
43 episodes
-
29. Treacherous Waters
Chinese Drama - 2004, 40 episodes
Someone told me to watch this so I added it to my list. It seems... Nice?
40 episodes
