Danny Chan
- Name: Danny Chan
- Native name: 陳百強
- Also Known as: Chen Bai Qiang, Chan Bak Keung, 陈百强
- Nationality: Hong Konger
- Gender: Male
- Born: September 7, 1958
- Died: October 25, 1993
Rather than focusing on his studies, Chan wanted to sing and loved playing the keyboard and piano. After graduating from middle school, he dropped out of high school and later made a cameo appearance in the "Winner Band" and also sang English songs on the radio. His father then sent him to San Francisco Conservatory of Music for further studies.
After his return to Hong Kong in 1977, he participated in and won third prize at the TVB Hong Kong Pop Song Writing Invitation with his self-written English song "The Rocky Road". In 1978, he won the championship at the Hong Kong Yamaha Electone Festival by playing the theme music of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". His talent earned him a singing contract with Hong Kong TVB and officially launched his entertainment career in 1979. In the same year, he made his acting debut in the TVB drama "Sweet Babe".
Emerging in the 1970s and gaining fame in the 1980s, Chan became widely recognised as the first modern day pop idol in Hong Kong, gaining fame alongside performers Alan Tam, Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. In the 1980s, the four were collectively known as "Three Kings and a Queen" or "Tam Cheung Mui Chan". His innate fashion sense was also renowned in Hong Kong showbiz.
Chan was fondly remembered for romantic ballads and unmistakable voice combined with his soul touching music compositions, which won him many music awards as well as posthumous awards.
During the span of his music career between 1979 and 1991, he had held many music concerts in Hong Kong, China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, Canada and USA. His first major 2-day local concert was held in July 1982 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. He actively engaged in various charity shows and activities, and had performed in the presence of the Royal Thai princess in a Thai charity show.
In 1991, Chan announced his decision to leave the HK music industry. He held his first farewell concert in Shanghai in January and February 1992. His plan to hold a few more farewell concerts in USA, Canada and Hong Kong halted due his sudden fall into coma.
Chan suffered from mild depression which worsened during the late 1980s, and was first admitted to hospital in 1985 for anxiety. His single life led to allegations of homosexuality, which had only been decriminalized in Hong Kong in 1991.
On 18 May 1992, Chan was found unconscious and sent to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment. It was speculated that it could be due to an accidental mixing of alcohol with medicine. Chan passed away on 25 October 1993 due to progressive brain failure after falling into coma for 17 months.
