During his childhood, he evacuated to present-day Hamamatsu, Japan. After graduating from Hamamatsu High School in 1947, he attempted to enter a university in Tokyo but failed. In 1948, while contemplating whether to become a novelist or a film director and wandering around aimlessly, he happened upon the Mulan Rouge Literary Department in Shinjuku, Japan. There, he published his debut work, "Momoiro no Shukudai".
