As a child, he was evacuated to Hamamatsu, Japan. After graduating from Hamamatsu High School (浜松一中) in 1947, he attempted to enter a university in Tokyo but was unsuccessful. In 1948, while considering a career as either a novelist or a film director, he encountered the Mulan Rouge Literary Department (劇団ムーラン・ルージュ文芸部) in Shinjuku, Japan, where he published his debut work, "Momoiro no Shukudai" (桃色の宿題).
