His family ran a printing business. He grew up in Tokyo from a young age, graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan Kudan High School. In 1953, he entered the Actor's Training Institute as part of the fifth class, and in 1956, after graduating from the institute, he joined the Seinenza theater company.
In the same year, he passed the audition for Toho's director Hiroshi Inagaki's film "Prisoner Ship" and made his film debut. Despite joining Toho in September of that year, which caused some controversy, he continued to appear in numerous works. After leaving Toho in 1962, he continued to appear in many films and TV dramas, but in later years, he became active primarily in stage productions based at Seinenza.
He passed away on June 9, 1989, at the age of 55, due to adrenal cancer.
