Born in Beijing, China in 1941, Ai later moved to Fujieda, Shizuoka, Japan in 1943, and then to Yaizu in 1953. Following his graduation from Waseda University's literature department, he embarked on a career journey that initially led him to an advertising agency. It was during this time that he crossed paths with scriptwriter Ishido Shuro, with whom he had formed a bond during his university days. Encouraged by Ishido, Ai started learning the basics of scriptwriting, as he served as assistant director for "Ultraman A." This experience served as a foundation for his eventual transition into full-fledged scriptwriting.
In 1980, under the name Ai Shotaro (阿井渉太郎), he won the 35th Shincho New Writer Award for "The Eighth Tohryu Maru," marking the beginning of his career as a novelist. In addition to publishing short and medium-length novels in magazines such as "Shincho," he wrote long-form mystery novels and also published maritime adventure novels.
In 2001, he boarded the research vessel "Hakuhou Maru" of the University of Tokyo's Atmospheric Ocean Research Institute and achieved the discovery of eel eggs and the discovery of new species of eels along with Aoyama Jun.
