She was talent scouted when she was in high school, and took part in many commercials. During the process of shooting commercials, she gradually developed an interest in acting.
In 1994, she officially entered showbiz when she participated in her first anti-Japanese film "Flying Tigers". In 2000, she won the 18th China TV Golden Eagle Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Yong Bu Ming Mu". In 2002, she won the 25th Popular Film Hundred Flowers Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Pure Sentiment". In 2004, she won the 14th Zhejiang TV Peony Award for Outstanding Actor in "Exquisite Girl". In 2010, she won the Shanxi Taiyuan Huading Award for Best Actress in TV Costume Drama. In 2012, she won the Anhui Satellite TV National Drama Festival Best Character of the Year Award.
Yuan and Chinese film and voice actor Zhao Ling met and fell in love during the filming of TV series "The Colonel's Daughter". They got married in 2007 but divorced at the end of the year.
In July 2011, she met Canadian Blaine Grunewald, Lehman Bush CEO. They dated and got married on 30 November that year. During a variety show in 2015, Yuan admitted she had divorced from Grunewald.
In March 2019, Yuan officially announced her marriage with Chinese poet Liang Tai Ping, 11 years younger than her.
