Danjuro XII's career began with his debut in "Daitokuji" at Kabuki-za in October 1953. Initially drawn to Kabuki, he temporarily withdrew during middle school to focus on academics but returned determined after a critical self-assessment during a joint performance with his father in "Sukeroku" in 1962.
After studying at Nihon University College of Art, Danjuro XII faced personal challenges with the loss of his father in 1965. Guided by Onoe Shoroku II, he persevered despite health setbacks, including leukemia, which he battled while continuing to perform.
His family connections included cousins Matsumoto Hakuo II, Nakamura Kichiemon II, and Onoe Tatsunosuke I. Throughout his career, he assumed several names at Kabuki-za, such as Ichikawa Shinnosuke VI and Ichikawa Ebizo X. He held roles in cultural associations and councils, contributing to the preservation and promotion of traditional Kabuki.
Despite health complications, including myelodysplastic syndrome and a bone marrow transplant in 2008, Danjuro XII remained dedicated to his craft and community involvement. He served as president of the National Bone Marrow Bank Promotion Association until his passing from pneumonia on February 3, 2013, at the age of 66.
