Active in science fiction fan circles since high school, Takai contributed to publications like "Uchujin", "Neo Null", "Mutants", and the Hoshi Shinichi Fan Club. He also created his own fanzines and officially debuted as a writer in 1979, with two short short stories published in the magazine "Kisotengai".
In 2005, Takai published *The World of Short Shorts*, the first research book on the genre in Japan. He continues to document bibliographical information about short short stories on his blog and manages the "First Appearance List" on the official Hoshi Shinichi website.
Since 2004, he has taught novel and essay writing at the Kobe Shimbun Cultural Center.
